UPDATE 1/11/13 - Deacon is doing good. Since his adoption with had to put our 12yr Pekingese & 17 1/2yr Himalayan down on 1-2-13. So having Deacon has helped me deal with my grief. One of my other 2 cats are still doesn't like him much & the other 1 is trying. He just gets too excited & jumps on them. We are working on that. He's a silly boy when it comes to his toys. He grabs one & runs under our bed & hides it. After a couple of days his basket is empty & I have to grab the yardstick and gather them up!!!! He great when it comes to bathing/grooming except don't touch his feet. He enjoyed his trip to Vermont for the holidays & met several people and had fun playing with my son's Bernese Mt dog. He's also great with our 2 grandkids ages 4 & 7 He's a very social & loving little guy & we love him!!! UPDATE 12/8/12 - Deacon is adjusting nicely to his new home. He has made friends w/2 of the cats(the 3rd cat is a hard sell). Our other Pekingese hasn't been feeling well this past week so it has been slow going there too and the fact that she is 12 yrs. He loves racing around his fenced in yard & loves going for walks which is good seeing he has so much energy. He had a bath the other day which went well & I tried to clip his nails but he wasn't up for that yet. Right now he is sleeping on his love seat surrounded by a lot of his toys & chew bones. He seems to like his new home & we certainly love him!!!! 12/01/12 - I was adopted 10/30/12 - Connor is still here, wondering where his new family is! He is a bundle of energy when I first get home, tearing around, playing with every toy he can fit into his mouth. He is such a happy little boy. We are doing much better now that he has a regular eating schedule, and he actually eats all (or most of) his food at one mealtime! The battle of the car door locks continues - he doesn't realize he will never win. He is doing great on leash, and beginning to understand that he belongs on my left side, and cannot lunge through the doorway in front of me. I still take him everywhere, and try to expose him to as much as possible. He has now been on three PGR missions with me, and he has behaved very well at all of them, has met everyone with a kiss, and just been a really good boy. He is collecting his toys now (those that have strayed beyond his line of sight!), and creating a big circle of toys in the big dog bed here. There is a round Connor sized space in the middle of all the toys! 10/21/12 - Well, Connor has been with me for a little over a week now, and he settled in pretty quickly, and has been a really great little dog. He is still somewhat puppy-ish, but seems quite willing & able to learn new stuff! One of the great things I've learned about him is that he's not afraid of loud noises. We had a thunderstorm that he slept through, and he has also now been on two PGR missions with me, and shows no fear of motorcycles or their noise. What a brave little man! I am enclosing a picture of him from Saturday in Laconia on our first mission of the day (we had two). What a little trooper, went off for a walk with my friend Nancy without hesitation. He does like to cuddle, but after a bit he realizes there are toys to be played with, and off he goes! Connor loves to ride in the truck. He has to be in the front seat, peering out the window intently. I always get a laugh when I'm driving with him, as he is always unlocking the doors. Of course, the truck keeps locking them again, so it's like the battle of the door locks. Because he has to stand on the edge of the seat, every time I have to stop quickly, or turn, he somersaults to the floor (or onto whatever I have on the floor!). He just gets up like nothing has happened, and returns to his post. He's very funny. He is eating well, now that I've learned to mix a bit of canned food in with the dry. Hopefully, he will fill out a bit soon. He is still pretty good on leash, and sits when I ask him to. I love the fact that he does not try to get out the door every time it's opened. Usually, about 8PM or so, he will go in and put himself to bed. He does not bark when left alone. He's an awesome dog, and will make some family very happy! 10/12/12 - Connor is here! He is a two year old Pekingese, 11 lbs (a bit skinny). He was groomed today, so is nice and short haired. He is scrubbing his head & growling at my carpet. He has all the cat toys out that I thought were gone for good, and I have given him all Hank's Christmas toys that I knew would have been destroyed immediately! He is very well behaved, and I will know in a couple of days about any commands he might know. It's taken him a couple of hours to settle in, so now he's running around like a madman, and rolling around on the carpets. He must be feeling really good now that he has all those nasty mats off! He appears to enjoy a good cuddle on the lap, but then he's off to play with a toy, or nap in his bed. Nice combination of independence and clinginess! We will see how he does overnight.
