06/06/13 - Ty crossed over to the Rainbow Bridge! Run free Ty!! 06/04/13 - Ty had a medical episode on Saturday night that the vet says may have been a stroke. He is not doing very well and is going to stay in his home until the time comes for them to let him go. Our thoughts are with his family who loves him very much. 5/23/13 - Ty returned to rescue. Ty's owners are very sad but have decided he needs to find a different home. Turns out Ty does not like to share his home with other dogs consistently and when he starts a fight with another dog it is not easy to get him to stop. He has only had two of these big fights-one with a family member's dog that he often plays with for hours daily with no issues and another was a foster dog that was older that he had no prior issues with. Neither time was it known why Ty started these fights. He also can be reactive when seeing other dogs on walks, but again not all of the time. For these reasons Ty will need to be in a home this time where he will be the only dog and not have visiting doggie friends. He will also need a home in a more rural area where he will not be exposed to lots of dogs on walks. He does love his people though and never an issue with them or during heightened times in the home either (ex: someone at the door, etc). More updates soon from his foster home. 02/19/13 - I can't believe that Ty has been "mine" for three months! On the one hand it seems like he's been here forever, but on the other the time has flown by. Ty's limp persists, but the Nupro SIlver joint supplement liver-flavored powder does seem to be helping--a friend commented that he seemed to be limping much less. He is still a great big love bug who likes to climb onto my lap. He also continues to be a big wimp when it comes to bad weather. This weekend we visited friends, and on Sunday it was snowing and blowing so hard that he wouldn't walk down to my cottage with me! He jumped right back into the car. Ty did fine with our most recent foster (Lila), so I am confident that when I am ready for another foster he will be, too. 11/10/12 - Ty has been adopted. 09/27/12 - Handsome Ty spent the day at the Vet yesterday where everybody loves him. We wanted to find out the cause of his intermittent limp. We did. The x-ray showed that he has developed arthritis in his left hind leg knee, probably due to an old injury. It appears that the joint deterioration probably does cause him some pain, and has already caused some minor muscle atrophy as he "favors" that leg. Not that he acts as if he is in pain. As far as treatment options, one option is an expensive knee surgery, a TOPL, in which a metal plate is inserted. I guess it's like a human's knee replacement. Of course, if a human has a knee replacement, they understand how important it is to rest the knee while it is healing, and to use a wheelchair and/or crutches as necessary. Unfortunately, dogs do not have that level of thinking, so many knee surgeries are unsuccessful because the healing time just doesn't happen. Not one person who I have spoken with or emailed with has said that they would do it again, even if the surgery was successful. Another option is to treat the inflammation. Rimadyl is a well-known name-brand anti-inflammatory that would cost about $30/month. Another anti-inflammatory medication is Metacam, which would be administered on an as-needed basis (no more than once daily), could be used to treat Ty. In addition, Ty would benefit from the addition of a daily dose of Glucosamine/chondroitan to help the joint. This is available in many forms. Probably most convenient and least expensive is to give a human-grade capsule daily. These can be found at pharmacies, and even Wal-mart (or Reny's here in Maine!) Ty is not crippled. He has a little bit of a limp, but can run and play and go for walks like any other four year old guy. He also can do his favorite thing--just hanging out with his person--and he's looking for the right person to 'hang out' with! 09/13/12 - Gorgeous Ty wowed everyone he met at Woofstock in Damariscotta, Maine. He is so big that someone asked me if he was a Mastiff/Boxer cross! (Actually, if he weren't a purebred Boxer, I'd wonder about a little Great Dane in his background because he's tall but not hefty.) He wiggled his nub at a tiny mouthful of a Pug, and soaked up every minute of human attention that was offered. There was a Rottie he didn't like, so we cut our visit short and headed home to my cottage. Good news--Ty seems to have adapted fine to be an "only" dog. He's been crated, and left loose in the house for a few hours at a time with no issues. In fact, at this point I think that he would actualy do best as an only dog, as long as he wasn't left alone for unreasonabley long periods of time. After all, he really still is a puppy at theart. Of course, my front door is shut (in addition to the storm door) so that he can't decide to have another adventure in my neighborhood. At the cottage, Ty loves to hang out with me in the yard, and never wanders. He stays in my yard as if it were surrounded by Invisible Fence! Of course, like most Boxers, he thinks he's the size of a Yorkie, and wants to be a lap dog--he even tried to climb into my hammock with me! Ty is a BIG love-bug, and he wants to love YOU! 08/28/12 - Hey guys, Ty here saying "hello", and "BOY did I have an exciting day!" I stayed home all day with Taisen in the other room, and Buttercup in her crate. I got a little bored. I liked it better when Buttercup was out loose with me. But it was Ok being almost alone. Then mom came home and brought me to the Vet. I LOVE the Vet and all his beautiful ladies there. (And wink-wink, they love ME, too!) Anyway, mom told you I'd been still limping a little on and off. So she wanted the Vet to look at me again and make sure that I'm OK. I am. And I'm up to 79 pounds and everybody said I looked GREAT!!!!!. I looked great on my x-ray, too, even though I didn't want to lay still on that cold table. But I did, and the doc said "my joints look good." Anyway, we came back home and then mom left with Taisen in her car and dad left with Buttercup in his car, and I WAS ALL ALONE! I don't like being ALL ALONE. So I decided to leave and look for everybody. I didn't find mom or dad, but I found a nice lady named Susan, and a nice policeman named Josh, and I wasn't alone anymore! Then mom came home and brought me back inside, and then dad came home with Buttercup. 08/25/12 - Ty continues to be a happy guest here at the Riverview. He is SO BIG! Like all young Boxers, he is a character. I call him my Big Goofus. Today I jumped into my little pool to cool off after mowing half of the yard. He gallommed down to check it out, and then decided to drink my coffee! He's been limping since he got here. The Vet looked at his foot (when he checked him in preperation for his Heartworm treatment) and decided that there was nothing to worry about. At this point I think he's just in the habit of limping! And of course he thinks he's a lap dog. Ty just wants to be loved--all the time! And he's ready for his NEW forever family to take him away and love him! 08/16/12 - Ty gained six pounds! The Vet says he's doing great (even though he still has mushy poop), and he did fine with his Heartworm treatment today. He has his second treatment tomorrow, and then will need to be kept quiet for a month--leash walks only, and NO RUNNING! He's a big gommy adolescent Boxer boy who loves everybody. And we are loving having him at the Riverview for what I am sure will be a short visit! 08/06/12 - What a gorgeous, well-behaved gentleman this boy is! I brought him up to the lakefront cottage this weekend. He wowed everyone there with his good looks and good behavior. Except for his emaciated state, and his unwillingness to go into the water! Being in the middle of his heartworm treatment, he has to be kept calm and quiet. I was wowed by the fact that, despite his youth, he made no effort to be wild and rambunctious. He just seemed to enjoy having a person, and a home, and to be out of the shelter. Now we're back at the Riverview Boxerhostel, and he's met Taisen without negative incident. So it looks like the only issue here will be: who am I talking to! 08/03/12 - This gorgeous man has arrived at the Riverview so he can finish up his Heartworm treatment in a calm and peaceful setting. And gain some weight! Boy, is he skinny! He was being treated at Harvest Hills Animal Shelter, but like most Boxers, he was not doing well in the shelter setting--quite stressed and losing weight. So SCBR took him in as soon as there was a foster home opening. And WE are that lucky foster home. He rode home great in the car, met the pack through the baby gate, and took care of his business in the back yard. Then a nice meal with lots of boiled rice. Soon to come, a long quiet snooze in a comfy crate. |
