| 02/05/12 - Gilbert was adopted. UPDATE 2/9/12 - Gilbert has settled in as if he never had been anywhere else. I made the 5 1/2 hour ride on Sunday to pick him up. Thanks to Jill for meeting me closer! Gilbert hopped in the car, laid down, and chewed on his raw hide bone that I brought for him for 2 1/2 hours! We took a pit stop so he could go to the bathroom, but he decided he didn't want to so he just drank some water, hopped back in the car and took a nap for another 1 1/2 hours. I stopped again, had to wake the baby up, and he did his business. He got back in the car and slept the rest of the way home! He is the most gentle, laid back pup I've ever met. After 3 days, we finally heard him bark. Now that he's found his voice, he barks at our cat Daisy all the time. He hasn't given us any grief about his crate, he is gentle with the kids, he walks amazingly with the leash, and he loves nap time with the family. We took a 2 mile jog this morning and he did great. He already knows where home is. When I get close I give him more room on the leash and he turns right in to the yard...LOVE IT! He's already learned "sit" and "no" and, minus a few accidents, he's doing great getting potty trained. We took him to the vet on Tuesday and he does have a parasite in his feces so he's being treated for that. He still has a little kennel cough so we are keeping an eye on that too. We all fell in love instantly and are so happy to have him a part of the family! Wish I could post a picture of what I came home to Tuesday night. My husband, the two kids, and Gilbert were all snoring on the couch! Thank you so much SCBR! This is our second boxer from your agency and you've brought much love into our home again! 2/5/12 - Gilbert has been adopted! 01/29/12 - Gilbert and Paisley made their way to the vet Friday morning. They are now up to date on vaccines ( received their final distemper & rabies). Paisley has roundworms which explains why she is so skinny, we have all 3 treatments needed to get rid of the nasty little buggers and get her at a healthy weight. Other than having some kennel cough which they are being treated for, they got clean bills of health and should be ready to leave this weekend. Gilbert weighs 33 pounds and Paisley 20 pounds. Some of the weight difference is that I think we have the largest and smallest pups from the litter. Paisley was probably the "runt", the vet expects that she will always be petite probably around 45 pounds full grown. Paisley is a bit timid and looks to the other dogs to follow their lead. She would do best in a home with another confident dog she can learn from. I think she has a more shy temperament to begin with and then living in a cage at the breeder & petstore never allowed her to come out of her shell. Gilbert on the other hand is much more outgoing. They are both well behaved for such young pups. They keep their crate clean and do most of their business outside..... Amazing how smart theyare and how quickly they are learning. If all the pups I fostered were as good as they are I would be very happy! Gilbert is surprisingly out-going and well adjusted. He is up to try anything at least once! He would do well as an only dog or with another dog. He is so sweet and cuddly, a definite lap dog! They need some work getting used to a leash. I don't think they ever wore collars prior to leaving the petstore so they are a bit behind. Gilbert does better on leash then Paisley. We have a fenced yard and due to cold weather and the pups being so skinny we have haven't done much walking. They will need some patience and treats to learn walks are fun! The pups were both very good at the vet and in the truck. When we returned home it took some coaxing to get them out of the truck. When they realized they were back at their foster home they began walking toward the house. Once they were inside and saw the other dogs they did they best "happy dance". They were all wiggles running around, jumping on my dogs with nubs wiggling so fast. I can only imagine their relief that they came back here and not somewhere that they would be forced to live in a cage again. It was really cute! 01/18/12 - Paisley & Gilbert arrived late this afternoon thanks to Helen and Barbara for helping them get to their foster home. I met Helen and she handed them off to me for the final leg of their journey. Of course the pups wouldn't potty when they were walked but Paisley pooped as soon as I put her in the crate, we cleaned that up, loaded Gilbert in and hit the road for the final 3 1/2 hours of their drive. Not even a mile into the trip I realized Gilbert had now done his business, luckily there was a rest stop 1/4 mile away. I stopped for a clean up and wondered what I had gotten myself into. Much to my surprise they were perfect, quiet little angels the rest of their trip. We didn't even have to make a stop as they slept the entire way. Once we got home they explored the yard, met Dominic our mutt who is the "boss", then Binghamton our Boxer boy and finally Stella the Bulldog. Paisley and Gilbert are loving life with their new playmates. They ate a good dinner, played some more and then found the dog bed and curled up together. After a power nap they went out to potty, play and play some more. I have to say they are settling in very nicely and are sweet, friendly little pups. They have spent much of their short lives crated so they can be a bit timid of new situations but quickly adapt. Paisley and Gilbert will need a family where someone is home most of the time and have the time/patience to work on training, socializing and housebreaking. They are both gorgeous flashy fawns. I don't expect that they will be with me very long as they are just perfect! More updates as soon as we get to know them better. |
