02/22/12 - Well its been a wonderfully busy couple of weeks for Buddy, and he keeps making progress.  He had a little "spa" day and got a bath and had his toenails clipped (they were more like talons).  Buddy did great the whole time, although he didn't love getting a bath, once I put him in the tub he never moved.  He didn't try to escape and never even shook the water off.  He didn't even try to move when I toweled him off, but once I set him free, whoa was he happy!  After the bath I clipped his nails, which he was fine with as well.  Buddy doesn't mind having his ears or paws touched.  The only thing was after trimming two paws he thought it was a game and kept pulling his paw away from me only to then put it in my face.  So I took a break and the next night I finished up the back paws, again with no issue.  I've trimmed his nails twice since getting him because they were so long, and every time he has been great about it.
Buddy has also been going for regular walks and he is doing much better on the leash.  I have him in a gentle harness because he does pull a little bit, but is getting better.  I've found that when I get home I have to take the harness off quickly, because he doesn't like having it on in the house and will go lay on his bed and chew on it.  This is the only thing I have seen him chew or be destructive with, and its only if I leave the harness on for awhile after he is walked.
Buddy has been out of his crate at night and is doing great!  He has free reign of the house and has not chewed on anything or had any problems.  Typically he will find his way into one of the bedrooms and jump into bed with someone and then spend the night cuddling.  Buddy has also found our dog toybin and is now comfortable enough to go in and pull out the toys he wants to play with.  I am continually amazed at how gentle he is for such a big dog.  He will play with a toy and bring it to you and when he takes it from you he is so careful & takes it sort of slow motion style.  He is definitely a typical spaz when it comes to playing, and will toss around his toys and paw at them as he slides all over the floor, but he makes me laugh everytime he plays.

I just wanted to let you all know how Buddy's vet app't went on Friday.   He got a clean bill of health, updated on all his shots and even better, he is up to 70 lbs!!  He still needs to gain a little more weight, but he looks so much better!  He has a lump of fatty tissue on his front leg, but the vet said it is nothing to worry about (probably the only fat this dog has anywhere on his body) and that he has "happy tail syndrome", because his tail whacks against anything hard and then bleeds a little but he said some bag balm will help it, but that it isn't infected and just part of having such a strong tail.   Buddy did so well with the vet & never even flinched when he got the shots, he was such a good boy.  I will send another update and new photos soon.

What a snuggle bug Buddy (aka Budster) is!  He continues to do well, loves to be a lap dog or couch hog.  If you are on the couch with him, he will wiggle his way in behind you so that he is tucked between you and the back of the couch and bury his face under the throw pillows.  What a ham!   Buddy is  gaining weight, which is wonderful, but he is still way underweight. He has started re-growing some hair on his back legs and belly.  I introduced Buddy to my dog last weekend and it went well.  The dogs get along and are fine together, but I have to watch them with a certain high value toy which I keep on top of the regrigerator to keep peace.  Buddy is about twice the size of my dog, and will jump in the air, play-bow to my dog and box his paws around.  My dog immediately runs and hides behind the couch to avoid taking a paw to the face, so they haven't really played yet.
Buddy has made great improvements and no longer cries when he is in his crate, and doesn't bark when left alone.  He does bark when I get home because he hears me pull in the driveway, but as soon as I get in the house and speak, he stops.  His diaherra issues seem to be over, and he now goes outside on his own during the daytime.  At night I still have to go out with him and stand on the porch, but its getting better, and sometimes I can get away with just watching him from the window.  I found out today that he does NOT like the rain!  Typical Boxer!  The poor boy thought he was going to melt so I had to walk him to get him to go.  He does have a new sweater to help keep him warm (thanks to Peggy for sending it!) and he loves it. All in all things are going great with Buddy and I can't wait to see the changes as he gains and recovers.

Buddy has been with me for almost a week and everyday I fall in love with him a little more. He doesn't give a lot of kisses, but he knows how to hug! He likes to come up to you if you are sitting down and he puts one leg over your leg and then puts his head on your shoulder and nuzzles right in for a big hug!
Buddy had a great weekend, and got to meet some new people. He did well with everyone, checked everyone over when they arrived and then circulated for the attention.. He has so little meat on his bones that he prefers his very plush dogbed, and will cuddle himself into a little ball. He also loves his kong, which is the only toy he has played with so far and is very gentle with it. I put in a treat with a small amount of peanut butter, and he will only hold the kong between his paws and lick at it. He won't bat the kong or roll it around, but seems to think he can lick his way through it to get the treat. So far one treat has lasted two days because he won't tip the kong to get it out!

I took Buddy for a quick walk in the backyard before the cold weather came and he did well on leash, but does pull a little, I think because he is so curious about everything!  He still isn't a fan of being outside alone, and when he needs to go out I have to stand on the porch or he will not take care of business.  He also got to briefly meet my neighbor's dog who barkrf and growled through the fence at him, so he just backed up and stood next to me. He did growl a little that night when a car pulled in the driveway to turn around, but all I had to do was say his name and he stopped.  He's also getting better with food, and will now sit for me when I make his food, and he is getting better with "gentle" when I give him treats. He gets so excited for treats that sometimes he forgets my fingers aren't part of the treat. He doesn't bite my hand, its more that his big jowls end up covering my hand and his tongue gets me all slimey. We're working on it though and he shows improvement every day!

I picked Buddy up last night and he did great in the car.  He curled up in the passenger seat next to me and laid there for the whole ride.  I got him home and he is such a great dog. He is severely underweight but he just wants to be your best friend.  He followed me all around the house and sniffed everything.   He does have a lot of scarring on his body and ears.  He also has several lesions on his paws and the tip of his tail.  The vet paper work references "lick granulomas" and I did hear him licking a lot during the night. None of the lesions are oozing or bleeding, but they are raw looking and red.   He also has lost the hair on the bottom half of his two back legs (probably due to lack of nutrients). I gave him his last day of Panacur medication today and the vet treated him for fleas.  He still has really bad diarrhea.   Buddy had lived in a house with another dog and a couple of cats.  Buddy is calm and very tentative about everything right now, but appears to know sit and shake/paw.  However when food is around all manners are gone.  There is a wild desperate look that comes over his face when he sees me preparing his food and he starts jumping and prancing and drooling.  It takes him only seconds to finish his food, and then he is his calm self again.  I am already figuring out new hiding places because if this dog can smell the food/treat he *will* find it.  Right now all edibles are in the pantry behind a closed door and I am working on teaching him that the garage is not a food source. Buddy seems to be a total lover, he is desperate for attention, and thinks of himself as a lap dog.  He hasn't given any kisses, but when he tries to get in your lap he is very gentle.  He does the boxer lean and is very much a velcro dog.  He is an absolute sweetheat and as soon as he gets settled, I will report his progress.  Please check back and see how this little lover blossoms!!
