12/20/11 - Run free!

12/20/11 -
Belle has been declining these past several weeks and I hate to see her be so very uncomfortable and lost.  I took her to the vet this morning and she is now running free at the bridge. It was definitely time. I know we always second guess ourselves as we do the drive for the last time, but once we got to the Vet it was obvious that it was definitely the right thing to do and not a moment too soon. I will miss her heavy breathing.

-Belle is a lovely lady and enjoys life to the fullest. She is very protective of the house and grounds, until she meets the intruder/guest and then she is ready to be their best friend, especially if there is an ear scratch or petting of some kind to be obtained.
Belle enjoys assisting/supervising me in just about everything that I do, whether inside or out.  She is my constant companion and makes sure that I get things done correctly.  She follows me everywhere and is very good company.  In the evening, while watching tv she frequently will put her head under my hand in order to remind me to pet her.

Belle was checked out by the Vets at Cornell University and the continuing cough/snorting is probably caused by a small diameter trachea and an elongated soft palate.  Otherwise named as a small degree of brachycephalic airway syndrome.  In spite of this technical sounding diagnosis, she is just fine.  She snorts frequently and if you don't know her, it sounds a bit like a growl.  But in reality she is just trying to say hi!  She is a good watchdog and lets me know when we have guests.  It was recommended to have her lose a few lbs, and she seems to take that requests seriously as she herself seldom finishes her dinner to the delight of the resident boxer and greyhound.  In looking through her vet records more carefully, we did find a notation that she was spayed.  She sleeps through the night and does need to be reminded to go out several times a day.  The dog door is not her favorite item, but she will use it with some encouragement.  During the day she stays close and follows me everywhere.  She is a gentle, quiet senior lady who likes her comfort.

Belle visited the local Vet this morning who could find nothing particularly wrong and could find no indication of a spay scar on her belly.  She recommended getting a chest x-ray to rule out heart disease and lung disease.  She also suggested that an ultra sound might indicate the absence/presence of a uterus.  We have an appointment at Cornell University on July 26.  Hopefully we can clear these issues up.   Stay tuned.

Belle came into rescue as an owner surrender when her owner got sick and was hospitalized.  She lived with 4 other dogs in her last home and is great with my two and foster boy Jordan.  She is a sweet loving dog and her snorting/talking is so cute!  She sleeps great through the night and sticks close when I am home.  In typical boxer fashion, she does not like the rain too much though!     She acts like our great protector when a stranger is on the other side of the fence, but as soon as they are on the same side of the fence, then she talks and talks and talks.  She calms down quickly.  Cats are not going to be in her future as she was a little snappy at the Vets office with the resident cats there and makes sure the neighorhood cats stay out of the yard.  She has no seperation anxiety and just takes a nap when I leave the house.  I have had no need to crate her as she is so good.  She is mostly house trained, but does need to be reminded to go out sometimes.  If you are looking for a sweet, talkative boxer gal who loves to be by your side, Belle is the one for you!

Belle has been here for a week, has learned the house rules and is settling in nicely.    She is a cuddle bug and would probably be just as happy as an only dog because, like many boxers, she tries to hog all the attention.  She is much happier being fed separately and that is working well and is much less stressful for all concerned..  A vet appointment is scheduled for later this week for an update on shots and a general physical.  Also, we are not sure if she is spayed or not, so will be checking on that, and to see if she is spayed,  She is also due for an extensive manucure.  She snorts/talks a lot which at first sounds like growling.  She is slower to warm up to men than women, but does eventually make friends all around.  She is a velcro dog now, never leaving my side.  She and I are becoming fast friends.

Belle arrived at the Doghouse yesterday and settled in rapidly.  Spent the first night downstairs with foster Jordan and introductions to the resident ladies went well on Sunday Morning.  Then all three boxers spent time playing and running in the yard and getting more acqainted.  She has obviously been at the head of the chow line and needs to lose a few lbs.  Belle is very loving and likes to stay close.  She talks a lot making funny grunting noises to communicate.  She will need a manicure and a Vet visit soon.  Will update more as we get to know her.
