| 3/11/10 - Happy, Happy Happy!!!
This guy is so happy he has "Happy Tail". Which means that I am not so happy because the tip of his tail is constantly opening up and bleeding. It must hurt him SO much! We are trying some things to help it heal up--wish us luck! Then I will be as happy as he is. Sherman has a mani-pedi the other night here in the Spa at the Riverview--aka my living room. He had not one bit of an issue with the nail clippers or the Dremel tool. Maybe he had these things done to him in his former life, but he was still so laid back about the process I was amazed. (I wish Rocky would tolerate the same procedures!) And on our most recent walk, we went downtown. And Sherman was one big tail wagging happy fellow to meet all of the people that were also walking around. No barking, just wagging. He was not quite as well behaved toward the dogs we passed--he is just so strong and he SO wants to have a meet and greet play date with them all! 3/6/10 - This gem of a guy is probably wondering why I haven't been singing his praises..and it certainly has nothing to do with him! (I've just been so busy...) Anyway, we here at the Riverview have nothing negative to say about this great guy. And today, we saw another of his sterling qualities. Sherman got out into the front yard by accident. And we live on a busy road so I was frantic that something could happen. But the instant I called him he turned back to me with tail wagging and all emergencies were averted! Thank heavens! We love him to pieces here, but want everyone to know that they are missing out on an opportunity to acquire a loving companion with a great personality! 2/17/10 - Some "firsts' for Sherman... He had his first leash walk with the Gentle Leader. Like other dogs he hated it at first, but by the end of our walk he had accepted it, and we both enjoyed the walk. Without it he does pull so hard that only a strong adult could safely manage him. With a Gentle Leader I think he would make someone a great jogging buddy! Last night we had snow up here in Maine. Only a few inches, but he seemed to enjoy running through all of that white stuff. Now I am not saying that he never experienced snow in New Jersey, (although they've had more down there this year than we have) but it was the first time I got to see him having fun romping in the whiteness. And a "second"--his return trip to the Vet to have his stitches removed. And again he was a perfect little patient who was adored by everyone (even some of the other customers!) AND he got to sniff a kitty in her crate and he just kept wagging that long tail at her like he wanted to play.. SO... I think we can change him to "CATS: Probably", because I think he would be OK with a cat that already knew how to set some limits on a playful dog. 2/9/10 - Sherman has been here at the Riverview for a week! Time DOES fly by when you are having fun. HE is such a happy fellow. Sherman has been a perfect guest here. He gets along great with both other males, and has learned that Lucky will play with him while Rocky will not. He has also learned that rough housing is allowed only outside. He also knows that outside is where he needs to do his business--not a single accident in the house! (Although his first day here we had one marking episode indoors) Not only has he learned to tolerate the crate at night, he now even sleeps in it all night long without being locked in. He HAS discovered the couches--I even spotted him up on one last night tail end to end with Lucky. looking like nearly matching fawn bookends. And this morning he discovered our bed. Apparently even though he isn't all Boxer he has that Boxer personality trait of "loving his comfort"! And while he is perfectly comfortable here, we know that he would LOVE to get comfortable in his own forever home. 2/6/10 - Sherman has earned full house privileges, and gets along wonderfully with both Lucky and Rocky. Lucky will play with him a little, but he has already learned that Rocky has no interest in playing with anybody. And he has learned that no roughhousing is allowed in the house, just outside. He seems like a smart guy--I hope he learns to stop counter surfing soon, too. Sherman goes into his nighttime crate-igloo without any assistance and sleeps through the night--as late into the morning as I do. We also crate him during the day when no one is home to supervise all three dogs, and he does fine then, too. I put a Kong filled with kibble and peanut butter in it and that occupies his mind and his mouth for a while. He does like to chew and has found lots of chew toys here to enjoy. And thankfully he hasn't tried to 'enjoy' anything that is not supposed to be chewed. Poor Sherman is saddled with a full length tail. That means that he is constantly smacking the tip into things. Like Rocky's face, or my glass of water on the coffee table (thankfully just water!). Or the edge of the door jamb so it starts bleeding. That happens a lot. It usually has a pink tip (instead of white) because he is such a happy guy. 2/3/10 - Jersey-boy has a new name--a REAL name...Sherman...taadaa! I asked my Vet and all of his staff to help me think of a name that fit this fantastic guy and that is what they came up with. I LOVE it for him! We also need to change a few items on his info--he is 65 pounds (and gaining!) and his age is estimated to be between two and three years, so let's call him 2 and 1/2. And now he is neutered and UTD on his shots, and ready for his new home. You might just have to get on line to adopt this guy (only kidding) because EVERYONE at the office fell in love with him just like I had predicted they would. He's snoozing at my feet in the computer room after returning home. I'm guessing he's a bit tuckered out form the surgery and anesthesia, because he didn't even eat all of his dinner. But his happy personality is still shining through--I got a tail wag when I walked in the door. 2/1/10 - Well, we're still trying out names to see if any we can think of get a reaction. So far, no luck! But we've been lucky in other ways. Whoever he is, he is a sweet happy boy! He slept through the night in the crate next to my bed. We had to turn it into an indoor doggie igloo because he was chilly even in our bedroom. So I just hung a couple more blankets over the wire crate and he settled right down. He also crated fine during the day while we were at work. Now I am not saying that he loves the crate, but he's cooperating. We'll be thinking about some introductions tomorrow, because all the signs for one big happy family are there! Yeah! 1/31/10 - NJ Boy has arrived in Maine at the Riverview Boxer Hotel. He is a bit skinny but oh-so-sweet! He rode quietly in all of the transporter's cars on the long drive, and impressed all of them with his gentleness and friendliness. But NOT with his leash manners--he doesn't have any of them yet! We'll be trying out some new names to see if he responds to anything, but for now he's still NJ Boy. He wandered around our backyard spritzing everywhere, and pooped, too, so he was being a good boy. And he wagged his tail through the baby gates at both Lucky and Rocky--who wagged their nubs right back at him. We'll continue to keep everybody separated for a few more days at the least, although I do think that introductions will go well when they do happen. |
