2/7/10 - Apollo is doing well with us here. He has been with us now for a long time but we don’t mind him being here because he is one of the easiest keeps. He sleeps most of the day, or wants to cuddle. He doesn’t really require much activity. Just a potty break 4 times a day to stretch his legs. He cannot run because of his arthritis and ACLs. he is very good about not running as long as he doesn’t have any silly heads around to work him up. He would do best in a house with an older dog that would be lazy and cuddle and play occasionally with him.  He occasionally plays with our dogs but for the most part he sits and watches. I think he enjoys watching them be silly. He will occasional let out a woof just to be part of the play. Apollo deserves to find a forever home. He is a nice boy and just needs to find a family that is willing to give him that little bit of extra care.

11/8/09 -
Apollo here… So tomorrow is what my FM calls my birthday. She said that the family is going to have a party for me with a present and COOKIES.. Boy, do I love my cookies and presents… YUM.. Makes me drool just thinking about it.  I just can’t wait. They also told me that I am going to be 7 and that means I am a senior now. Senior.. kind of a depressing word if you ask me. I prefer mature, or aged to perfection, NOT SENIOR.
I have had my first dose of snow here in Maine and that was ok. I had to wear my jacket out to the bathroom and to play since I get cold easy. But boy, if I say so myself, I do look like a stud in it.  I have been working hard on my obedience, and when we had a little visitors for Halloween I was on my best behavior. FM and FD were very pleased with me. I love pleasing people. It just makes me feel so happy and then I get the wiggle.. and boy I love wiggling… Well, I am off to play in the yard with my fellow canines and chase some leaves. Wish me a Happy Birthday tomorrow!!
Wiggles and Kisses -Apollo

9/28/09 -
So I have been hanging out at this place that they call a foster home for almost 6 months now. It is a pretty cool place. Lots of friends for me to play with and even cats to sniff. Everyone pretty much things I am the cats meow that meets me, and can’t understand why I haven’t found my perfect home yet. My fm had guest over this weekend and I slept on the futon with them all weekend. I was very good at sleeping in the middle so no one got dead leg!  I take my meds like a champ and listen to FM and FD like a good old boy should.  I stay still for baths and nail trims also. I am pretty much perfect.  I even let FM dress me up in a Ninja costume. ( Don’t tell FM but I looked nothing like a ninja.. I looked like a total fool.) But I entertained her and let her even take photos of me all dressed up. Well I am off to chow down on some kibble and maybe even a good bone. Then some tv with the F-family and bed time.. Old timers need there rest you know!!!!

8/15/09 -
Apollo has been with us now for 4 months. He has really learned how to be a pack member and doesn’t even try to fight with our dogs now. I think he actually realized how much fun another dog can be when FM and FD are at work! He stays baby gated in the living room during the day, and if it wasn’t for our naughty lab he hangs out with I think he probably would do just fine free range in a house.  He loves his cookies, and plays with the toys now too. He really has become quite a dog!
Apollo did “tweak” his knee he had ACL surgery on about 2 weeks ago and is now on some anti inflammatory drugs and pain killers to help get that healed up. He is being lifted to lay on the couch with us at night and is on short leash walks until it heals. (4 weeks or so) He is such a doll thought. He loves to cuddle and hasn’t met a person yet that he doesn’t get the wiggles for. Wont you give this senior guy a chance to be part of your family?

6/30/09 -
Well, here at the house we cannot say enough good things about Apollo. Has settled in WONDERFULY and is a fantastic dog! We have him free roam in the house now when we are around with the other dogs, cats, and the occasional parrot and he is great, no problems. Every day he seems to get better and better. Recently, we have started to let him off leash in our backyard, which is fenced in, and he will run around to do his business and come right back to you when called to get his leash put back in for the trip to the house. Since Apollo does not seem to like to sit very much we are still working with the stand-stay command at doors which he seems to be learning very well as we also take his leash off at the door before he goes inside.
He really truly is starting to come out of his shell wonderfully. Lately, he has decided that this little green toy with a plastic bottle in it that crinkles when he plays with it is just THE BEST THING EVER. He will grab it and run around the house and shake it and tug at it but is never nippy with fingers and is very aware of not getting to mouthy with play. Even though we will miss him around the zoo here we hope everyday that Apollo finds a very loving and deserving home for such a special guy. It has been great having him in our home and hope to see someone give him a forever home soon! He is waiting for you, so come get him!

5/24/09 -
Apollo has made a total turn around since he first arrived here. We were not sure if we was ever going to make it with all of our dogs, or not. He has really decided that he likes to be around them. Especially our girl boxer. He even cuddles on the beds with our dogs now. He still gets grumpy if someone jumps on him or gets pushy.  I think some of his problems with our two more playful males are possibly related to his arthritis and not like getting jumped on or bumped into. He is NO doubt a tough dog to get introduced to a group of dogs, but once he has learned they won’t hurt him and he isn’t in control he settles right in. He still spends time when we are at work in a crate since we can’t control our crazy heads when we are away.  This being said, it wasn’t an easy process, but it obviously can be done.
He loves to play tug with a  little stuffy dog toy we have and he loves going for walks. He likes balls and ropes too.  Since Apollo seems uncomfortable when he sits we have started to teach him “stand stay” at the door before we go out for walks and also before he enters a room or the house or yard.  He is doing very well with it. It is a lot like making your dog sit at the door before they go out but in his case he stands and stays. It is also a good tool to use when you are at a vet getting a dog weighed or when you want the doctor to examine the dog. He seems to be picking up on it nicely.
He also is learning “Go lay down” which is our command for the dogs to find a bed and lay down. It helps with crazy times and when things get to crazy I just say “go lay down” and everyone finds a bed to settle the mood. He is very smart and I think he could learn a lot of other commands too.
We can’t even understand why this guy hasn’t gotten a call yet. He is loveable, loyal, and good hearted. So stop waiting!! Call and find out all kinds of other good things about this boy!

05/16/09
- Apollo continues to do well here with us. He has really figured out the routine and has been able to be out with our dogs at all times except when we aren’t home.  When we aren’t home he stays in a crate. He is even ok with that. He doesn’t love it and barks a few times just as a “Hey did you know you locked me in this stupid thing?” kind of statement.  He is eating well, drinking well, and seems to be quite the healthy little man, other than arthritis in his back legs. His legs with the supplement are in good shape so that he can even try to play bow and butt scoot at the cat.( She was not to thrilled with his play and ran into another room as to avoid being his playmate!) He really is all wiggles and niceness when it comes to the cats. He knows they have claws and they can hurt so he tries to be as best buds as possible with them. He has also tried to get along better with our male dogs as he knows that we don’t let him misbehave. He does well with consistency. We have been working on him a little bit with obedience. He knows a handful of commands but since his knees don’t like to bend, sit and down are very hard for him and he tries to avoid it at all cost if it is asked for.  He has become very good at coming to us when we call as he knows he gets a cookie when he does as he is asked. He is a very smart boy and with just a small amount of time would make someone a very good companion..

5/3/09 - Apollo has figured out our system now, and has settled in like a champ. He now can be let out with all the other dogs in the family and be a good boy as long as things are kept calm and toys, and treats are removed. It took us until just 3 days ago to get him integrated with our other dogs.(About 3 weeks) It was a very long and tedious process, and took a lot effort on mine and my husbands part to keep order. He only spends short amounts of time with them and usually is at night when everyone is tired. He is good with our female dog and never has shown once ounce of "grumpiness" towards her but gets "grumpy" with our boys when they get crazy.
He would do best in a home that has a female dog only, just because there are chances of squabbles with him and a male dog.  He is very nice as far as walking past dogs on a leash, pulls a little to see them, but if you tell him no and to leave it he will. He is now sleeping all night on a dog bed in our bedroom. We baby gate the gang in at night so no one can leave the room and get into trouble. (But apollo just wants to sleep and has no desire to cause trouble) Our dominant male is crated.. and our submissive male understands apollo now and just leaves him alone when it is bed time!
It has made us happy to include apollo in our daily routine with our gang and I think it has helped him adjust quicker.  He eats well, does his buisness where he should, and just plain wants a family to call his own. His greatest downfall is that sometimes he lacks trust.  Which is understandbale for a dog who has been juggled around like this guy has. He gets a little scared when you reach for his collar too quick. Slow motions when we are grabbing for his collar has helped him with his nervous reactions. He now trusts us when we hook him for walks and other things, but a new family would want to go slow for a while as he gets a little nervous that you are mad at him, or something bad is going to happen when you grab his collar.
Apollo had his nails clipped and got a bath this weekend and was a good boy for all of it. Over all report on apollo is he is a VERY good boy. We even dressed this boy up today in a sombreo for Cinco de Mayo and he tolerated all that craziness! I know there is a perfect family out there for him! We are just waiting to get the call!

4/25/09 - Apollo is still doing very well with us, but I can tell he
really wants to be with his forever family that will bring him for walks and play with him in the back yard. He is such a good boy(!) and always does his business outside. He crates well and sleeps all night on his bed with no problems. He is eating very well now and even enjoys his cookies and rawhides. He is a wonderful dog!! He has been hanging out a little more with our female dog and they seem to have come to an agreement with each other. He has been greeting our male dogs across a baby gate perfectly fine. He has become very accustomed to the furballs with claws and has even learned about where we feed them thier yummy canned food... One "NO" was all it took, and this boy turned his nose right up to it. He is obedient and likes to please....SO COME ON GET YOUR APPLICATIONS IN ON THIS MAN!! HE IS WAITING FOR YOU!

4/20/09 - Apollo has been doing very well here with us. He has the whole study to himself. Since I have been working on my thesis, Appy as I have fondly nicknamed him, and I have spent quite a bit of time together at the computer. He enjoys being at my feet or laying on his bed napping while I type.  He is an older boy and enjoys cuddling and nap time. But when he gets outside in the yard, he sometimes acts like a puppy running all over. He is pretty good with his obedience, and he is very smart and able to learn new things. He is fully house broken and always does his buisness outside in the yard.
When we first got Apollo, he was a little stressed out over being up-rooted again. He has since settled in and is doing well. He has free time out and about in the house many times a day and then when the "boys" are out he is baby gated in the study. He sleeps in an open crate at night with just a small baby gate in the study doorway keeping him in the room all night long. He sleeps very well and is very quiet. When we leave for work we have decided that Apollo needs to be put in a crate. He doesnt like to be confinded to a room with the door shut and will dig at the edge of the door. Since he doesnt get along with our male dogs, we have to make sure everyone is shut in while we are away so the crate is where he stays for safety of everyone. He isn't excited about his crate, but at the same time he does well in it.  I believe he would do fine loose in a house if he were allowed more freedom and time to adjust.
He does well with our female boxer and they will just wander around with each other. Occasionally, he gets silly and spins and bows with her.  He has offically met both of our cats and realizes now that they are little fur balls with sharp toes. He tends to make big circles around them and is very quick to move out of their way. So a home with a cat or two would be ok with apollo, although I am sure he would love to be the one and only!
When Apollo came into rescue he was on a supplement and a joint formula diet for his arthritis. We checked with our vet today and he said that he should stay on the supplement but that it was overkill on the glucosamine so once he finishes up his bag of J/D food we can switch him to something a little more economical.
On Saturday, Meme and Papa came over to visit the "fur grandchildren" and apollo got to meet them. He jumped all around and acted soooo excited to see them. He even gave them both big boxer kisses. Both of them were impressed with how quicky he warmed up to them!  Whoever gets this kid is going to be one lucky family. Get your applications in for apollo quick! He is GREAT dog and isnt likely to be around long!
04/15/09
- Apollo has really won our hearts. He is the most cuddly, and loveable boxer guy!  Even though he has arthritis in his back end he still bounces around like a puppy at times, but is quick to settle down and sleep at your feet or on his bed if you are busy. Apollo will get up on furniture but quickly gets off if asked, and usually doesnt stay to long anyways. I think he could be quickly trained into not getting on furniture if this was his forever homes preference. He has been eating well with a little coaxing with 1 teaspoon of canned mixed in. At first he was so stressed over the change he didnt want to eat and where he is so thin we wanted to make sure he maintained weight. He is deffinately loving this special snack.
He does seem to still be upset over the change, which is understandable, and lets out a whine or a sigh if we are not with him. We are pretty sure he is trustworthy in a house, as we left him in our office out of his crate for a while yesturday while we were gone, and he didnt do a thing!  He seemed less stressed than when he was in the crate.
Apollo also met both of our cats yesturday. He was soo curious about them that he whined and whined at them till one finally approached. He got a little sniffy with her and she gently cuffed him with her paw. He backed away immediately and gave her space. I think he would do well with cats.
Apollo does know his basic mannors, sit, down, paw ,and easy(when on a leash).  He doesnt really enjoy sitting or downing as I think it hurts his arthritis. Although if you have a tasty snack he will do it quickly.  This great guy would make someone a fantastic addition to their family

04//12/09
- Apollo has been here for almost 24 hours. He is a very sweet lovable boy and loves people. He came back into rescue because he has some problems with small children. He should probably not go to a home with a child under 4 years of age. He had been around kids ages 9 and 12 and did fine with them.
Apollo has had an ACL repair on one of his knees and has very bad arthritis in the other knee. Because of this he needs to be kept at an ideal weight and kept on special food and a supplement once a day.  He seems to get along just fine.
He is a bit of a nervious nelly. He has been whinning and isnt quite sure what he is doing here. He has been shuffled around the last year of his life so it is understandable he is unsure of things. He loves to cuddle and play with his ropes and toys with me and my husband. He is a FANTASTIC people dog. He met our female boxer mix and he was ok with her. He did jump on her and push her to the ground so I am not sure he knows how to apropriately play with another dog. Him and our male dog dont seem to like eachother much from a distance. His previous owner said he didnt do well with male dogs. So he should probably only go to a home that has a female dog or no dogs.
He seems interested in our cats, and stares at her as we pass but hasnt made any moves to hurt them. He has seen them only in passing to go out to go potty. Our cat was crying this morning to get her breakfast and he seemed as if he didnt know what the noise was so I am not sure if he really understands cats.
Apollo slept in a crate last night and that was not to his liking. We have to lead him into his crate on a leash and with cookies as he doesnt like going in. Once he is though he wont dart out.  He quietly cried off and on and dug at the door overnight. I would say he is crate trained but is used to people trusting him so is out of sorts with why he is being put in one.  He was left out of the crate in our office for 2 hours while we watched a movie in the other room and didnt touch a thing so he seems trustworthy for short periods from what we can tell.

04/08/09 - Changes in the family are sometimes hardest on the pups. Apollo will be back with us this weekend. Click HERE to see his old profile page.

UPDATE 12/15/08 - Apollo is doing very well here at his forever home. We ran into a bit of a bump at the end of month 1 as he was showing some "snappiness" towards our 14 month old. We have found this was more fear of the child and not aggression towards him. Apollo is a bit fearful of anything shorter than he is, unless it has a treat in its hand. We have Joe (our 14 month old) giving Apollo treats when he comes in from doing his doggy duty outside. This has done well to aid in the  pecking order. Apollo was a bit under weight when he got here, this was actually a benefit to him as he has arthritis in his hind legs. He has been on a supplement that has greatly improved his mobility and allowed us to put a couple pounds on him. He is six years old now... but you wouldn't know it.....he runs and plays like a puppy!!. When the electricity goes out he is no help at all.....he chases the flahlight beam and tries to "kill" it...this makes power outages rather entertaining!

10/9/08 - Apollo has been adopted!

9/12/08 - Unfortunately, by no fault of his own, Apollo is back in rescue to find another home.  Updates soon from his foster Mom.

9/5/08 - Apollo was adopted!

9/2/08 - So yesterday I gave Apollo his bath because he was a bit ripe needed to get rid of some of his dead hair. When we went into the bathroom and I told him to get into the tub, he locked his knees and wouldn't have it. So I lifted him into the tub-- oh my, he's big! I ran the tub faucet and used a pitcher to wet him down and he just stood there in the tub. I kept telling him what a good boy he is and he seemed to think that was acceptable enough for him to stay still. After rinsing and toweling him off, I told him to come on out of the tub, but he wouldn't move. He wanted to stay in the tub! So again I had to lift him. When I put him down, he became exuberant-- he ran around the landing outside the bathroom, and kept
crouching into playing position, with his front legs straightened and his hind ones crouching, really excited, trying to get me to play. I dried him off a little more, which he thought was a wonderful game, and kept gently rearing up to play. So I took him downstairs and he raced through the door to the back yard and started running figure eights around the yard over and over and over... What a silly boy :) I
was just laughing and laughing, and eventually he got all his running out and came back into the house, mostly tired out, but every so often crouching to play again, like an uncontrollable reflex, before he would flop down again.
