| UPDATE 6/13/10 - Well it hard to believe that Tallulah has only been here for 3 months and that she is deaf. It seems like she has always been a part of the family and her deafness is not an obstacle at all. She is really a joy and definitely one of a kind.
Tallulah loves the outdoors. Our weekends are spent outside gardening and enjoying the nice weather. She is a sun goddess and follows it around the house and the yard. She checks on us in the shade but retreats to soak up some more rays. She is good about the application of sunscreen. Her new nickname is “Polka Dot.” More and more spots are appearing daily. Maybe she is a Dalmatian in boxers clothing! UPDATE 5/14/10 - Hoorah!!!! Tallulah is sleeping through the night! Looks like the meds helped. She now gets covered up with her blankets after cookie time to help keep her snuggly warm. We have completed our trainingand she did very well. This little four legged is such a joy to have around. We have been enjoying the beautiful spring. She just loves hanging out in the yard with us and what a great help she is in the garden. In between the rows of garlic seems like a wonderful place to take an afternoon siesta. Tallulah went to doggie day care. She had a blast! Romping and playing with all those dogs. She was a big hit with the four leggeds and the uprights. Tallulah is such a pleasure to have in our lives! UPDATE 4/13/10 - Tallulah is loving life and so are we. What a SMART girl. She has mastered the underground fence and just loves to romp and play with her "sheepie" friend Kelis. We are attending training and she is doing wonderful. She is getting up several times throughout the night so we made a trip to the vet. Diagnoses . . .UTI and whip worms. She is being medicated and I am hoping to get a full nights sleep soon. All I can say is what everyone says when they meet her “there is something special about that dog!” She always puts a smile on your face (Even At 2:30am). UPDATE 3/21/10 - Tallulah is AWESOME. What a great dog, sometimes I just want to pinch her to see if she is real. Week 1 has been great we had a rainy ride back from New Jersey and Miss T slept in the rear foot well most of the ride getting up occasionally to check things out. Once she arrived in Maine she met Kelis on neutral territory after a few sniffs all they wanted to do was romp and play. The pouring rain had no affect on them. Within 5 hours we had 2 dogs down while having our dinner which we credit Tallulah for teaching Kelis to lie down on the dog bed while we are having meals. She hates her crate but I must say she has made great improvement. She is quiet by the time I get my coat on and get to the door. Still panting but no whining or barking. We went to the vet on Tuesday and she was a big hit. A picture of Tallulah was requested by Dr. Mulski for their book. She has a bacterial infection in her ears and some skin dermatitis in the folds under her eyes. We are cleaning and medicating. Recheck and Lyme booster on April 6th. Tallulah begins obedience tomorrow night. I found a trainer that has experience working with deaf dogs. Bath and nail trimming today and just as suspected good as gold. We are learning the rules of the house…no cat chasing and waiting before we exit a door. She is a quick learner. Tallulah loves getting the big thumbs up. She has great house manners she whines at the door to go out. I can’t say enough how great she is. We play and run in the back yard. Kelis doesn’t know what to make of her at times because Tallulah is so quick and has figure out short cuts to cut Kelis off. Needless to say I am getting my exercise because I am on the other end of the 20 foot lead. For the first couple of weeks I want Tallulah to learn the perimeter of the fence following Kelis’s lead because Kelis know the boundaries and will not cross it. The flags are up to help Tallulah with a visual aid. I could go on forever . . . she is great and makes us smile everytime we look ot her face! 3/14/10 - I was adopted today! 3/5/10 - I have the smartest puppy here! We have mastered the command "sit" using my index finger in a swooping motion from high to low. When she goes outside in the evening and I would like her to come in, I flick the flood light on and off 2 times. Tallulah promptly comes right in and get's a big thumbs up from her foster mom:) You can clearly see she is very proud of herself when she get's the thumbs up :) She is fully house trained and will tell you if she needs to go potty and she is very food motivated which is a wonderful tool for training. I think we are making slow progress on the crate. I did not hear her barking when I left or returned from the office yesterday. She seems to be gaining an understanding of the norms of the house. She appears to be learning she must be crated when I leave, but she is not in there forever. She is understanding as soon as I get home good things happen. We get out of the carte, go outside and then have dinner. More to come on this cutie :) 2/28/10 - Well , let me tell you about this charming youngster. We have had some week together. After 2 weeks in her foster home, Tallulah's personality is just shining through. We had another snow storm in NJ and after two days of cabin fever Miss T and I went for a walk. So, we're walking along and Tallulah spots a snow man , she began to play bow, then spun her body around in circles in the air and began to bark at him. It was really funny. She then took 4 steps forward and repeated the whole dance again. I think she wanted the snow man to come and play with her :) She was quite fond of this thing. Another adorable thing happened last night. Tallulah is wonderful about telling you she has to potty or would like a treat etc. If she has to go out she will sit by the door or come up to me and whine. Sooooo, while I was on the computer, she came and sat next to me and began doing this kind of whining, woo woo sound. I decided that I was going to tease her a bit.... ( now please remember this girl is deaf) I began to make the facial expression of baying/howling at the moon. I did this twice before Miss T caught on. Tallulah and I were howling together, this lasted about 15 minutes. I cannot tell you what a joy it was to experience this innate part of her. We were in sync and I had such fun playing with her. So, if you want a partner to help you bay at the moon every once in a while, this is the girl for you! She purses her lips together with all she is worth!! It's a must see :) 2/21/10 - I have to tell you this is such a wonderful girl. I normally whine when I think about having an adolescent Boxer as a foster. Let's face it they are charming but they are normally a lot of work. WHEWWWWWWWWWW :) This little girl is so well behaved. She garbage surfed once, drank out of the porcelain God once and chewed cardboard once. ONCE is the operative word here. When I asked her to stop, she did right away. She has not gone back to any of these items. I hoping she will train my resident dogs while she is here :) She is truly an ambassador for this breed. I have been focusing on simple training and getting her use to being awakened suddenly. This is important to do with a non hearing dog.She is no longer acting startled... she again goes with the flow. Stay tuned there is more to come on this little angel girl. 2/17/10 - What a charming little girl I have here. Miss T has made her way into the pack, she lays down on a dog bed and just goes with the flow. She is not pushy and knows her place at the bottom of this pack. I have to be honest and tell you for a young Boxer this is a well behaved calm little girl. She is house trained, she waits for the other dogs to go outside with her. This seems to give Tallulah a sense security. ( gives her foster mom a sense of security too) If I call the hearing dogs they come and she follows. She will go to the vet Friday to be brought up to date on her shots and then she can go to her forever home.. is her forever home your home ?? Please get your application in right away..she won't be around long :) 2/16/10 - Hey folks, let me tell you this is a Boxer puppy. A Boxer puppy with all the bells and whistles that go with that identification. She loves to romp and play. The former owner has her Birth date as 7/23/08 which makes her 1.5 years old. In some ways she presents younger like a 10 month old. Her former family has 3 young children and did not have the time to properly work with this special needs girl. You can see she is a few months behind in her development and training. She is sooo smart and soooooo sweet, her training will come along quickly. She has a lot of things to do and see- so many things to check out in her new environment. I think putting her breed/ age over the deafness helps with understanding this little one. Let's face it, she has no clue she is deaf. It's just not an issue for dogs. She is your typical Boxer baby. She is busy. We are working on some of the basics of doggie sign language.. ( this is not American Sign) this is simple basic stuff. Waving my arm and hand to me is come, thumbs up is good girl, slowly pointing my index finger in a downward sweeping motion is sit. The disapproval one is kind of funny. I wave my arms and make a ugly face all the while telling her no. Just like any deaf dog that does not want to hear what you're saying, she promptly turns her head away from the eye contact. Hey, if she is not looking at me, she cannot" HEAR" me right .lol lol Miss Tallulah has been nothing but completely respectful with the 4 resident dogs here. She knows who she can RUFF play with ( Sully) and who is the old lady that just gets respect and kisses ( Lou). Tallulah was actually kissing and grooming my older Bulldog Mix.... This is a solid pack and Miss T is a quick study. We are slowly continuing intro's one by one and using the crate for rotations. A securely fenced in yard is a must for this girl. We generally like to place a deaf dog with a hearing dog. It's like a built in sitter. Tallulah will have a vet appointment at the end of the week to be brought up to date on her shots. More to come as we get to know this little one :) |
| Note- because I am deaf, I'm best in a home with a fenced yard and another dog to show me the ropes. |
