UPDATE 2/20/11 - It's been a while since our last update. Slick has fully taken ownership of us,our home and his adopted sister Beauty. He has a special fondness for joining us in bed in the early morning hours for a quality snuggle and snooze before it's time to get up and have breakfast. Slick is so good with Beauty, allowing her to seemingly dominate him during their daily "mock battles", sometimes he gets to be on top. Occassionaly her youthful exhuberance will get the best of him and he will bring playtime to an end with a short low growl, she always takes the hint immediately. Slick is so mellow and has saintly patience especially where Beauty is concerned. I can't imagine these two apart from one another. His favorite place has become a spot right in front of the woodstove, "AAAHHH feel the heat". He only goes outside to do his business or to bark at something real or imagined. He's had it with snow and cold as we have and is looking forward to laying in the warm sunshine. Until next time.

UPDATE 11/20/10 - Slick is one happy camper! Now that Beauty has come to live with us, he is having the best time! They were made for each other! Beauty keeps Slick well exercised and she makes a nice, soft, sweet pillow for him to lay on when they snuggle on their couch. They love to play watch dog and charge out the dog doors to any hint of activity. There is a big yellow cat that used to catch birds at the feeder but sightings of the cat have been scarce now that Beauty and Slick rule the yard. What a team! Slick is probably the sweetest, most gentle Boxer we have ever known (after Maxwell, our first Boxer). He is enormously patient with Beauty and all other people and creatures (except the yellow cat!). Beauty can get a little rowdy but Slick rarely gives a soft little warning growl that says "enough"! He mostly lets her wear herself out then they both crash.
We look forward to obedience classes with dogwiseobedience.com of Munjoy Hill, Portland, Me. with Christine Kiley. She is the best! We will share our experiences with her as they happen. Check out her website. We may appear there!
The four of us look forward to a happy, healthy winter!

UPDATE 9/15/10 - Hello from one happy Boxer boy!
I figured I could tell you myself how I'm doing.
I see mom sitting at this thing alot and I am so smart, I can do it too! Well, my new mom and dad are so happy to have me that I think I'll stay right here. I get lots of hugs and pats.I hear them tell everyone how sweet and calm I am! I love my new dad but I think I am definately a momma's boy. When we go pick up dad at work some evenings, I am so happy to see him!I love riding in the car! They gave me a new bone that is filled with yummy stuff that I like to gnaw on when I am in my new wire cage kennel that has a nice comfy bed and I can see everyone from. I discovered this little door next to the big door that I can go out to this nice, big fenced in yard and if I poke my head in the other way, I find myself right back inside the nice, dry, warm house. It's fun! I learned to do it by the second day I was here!
And there are birds to watch outside and gardens to explore..I like to whiz on mom's kale and I noticed that she made a strange face when I did it but, maybe she was relieved that I watered it for her. I am going to take some fun obedience classes soon with mom. I already can sit for a treat pretty well, but I can learn lots! I am almost done with my antibiotics for a UTI and I came through my treatment for heartworm with flying colors! I am a happy survivor!
Before I go, I have to tell you that the nice neighbors across the road have a big, funny feathery bird called Peaches that I got to go visit! I can tell that Peaches and I are going to be friends! Whenever I go out to the car, I look over at their house and wag my little nub because I remember my nice visit there and I want to go back and play with Peaches! He makes loud noises and does funny things with his feathers and swings from his mom and dad's hand and I could watch that all day!
So, that's all from me today. I bet you wish you could live here too!

9/8/10 - I was adopted today!

8/22/10 - I could not ask for a better dog, summer guest, to take care of.  He is handling the need to be crated quite well and is very good on leash when I take him out.  I can hardly wait for the day when I can take the leash off and tell him to go and run!  Heart-worm treatment sucks!
He is not a fan of rain, and luckily we have not had much this summer.  He is so good when I do take him out.  He takes care of business and then will try to do the "jet" take off.  Not easy to do on a 6 foot leash.  He has gotten his revenge other ways:  after he does his business, he does the back leg scuff.  I have managed to dodge it most of the time.  He can really scuff up the dirt and leaves.
I feel so bad for him because not only is he being treated for heart-worm, but he is not able to really bark.  I suspect that his vocal chords have been injured in some way.  He tries to bark, but his voice is extremely hoarse.  He has not actually been de-barked, but something is not right.
Right now, he is awaiting a clean bed.  There comes a time when these things are necessary.  This time, he actually is getting a new piece of foam bedding to go with his clean cover. When the time comes, someone is going to get a very nice dog!  He returns to the vet in 2 weeks and then we shall see.  It is probably time to get your applications in.  Once he has a clean "bill of health" he will be snapped up quickly!

8/5/10 - Slick spent 2 whole days at the hospital and I retrieved him this morning. He returns, for another day, in a month, and then 2 weeks later, should be ready for adoption. He still has heart-worm microfilia in his blood and that is why he has to go back in a month.
He is back in his crate with fresh bedding and fresh water. While waiting for information he met the "office cat" and just sniffed. No aggression of any kind. Of course most dogs will chase something that runs, and that includes cats!

7/27/10 - Hi there, Fans!  This is the Slick Man again.  This computer thingy is getting easier for me. Well, I was supposed to have more heart-worm treatment today, but the medicine didn't come in so the vet says I can wait until next week.  That's perfectly ok by me.  It is a shot and I don't like shots.
Anyway, FM has company.  Boy is she a doll!  She is a little older than I am, but she has beautiful fur and very pretty eyes.  She even has a very bushy tail and it is long!  Lovely Honey!  Her name is Honey and I would like her to be my Honey!  I'm working on it, but she sort of ignores me.  Sigh!
FM said that I shouldn't get my hopes up because Honey will be going home in a few days.
Anyway, I'm stuck her for awhile, but I don't mind too much.  The food is good, the bed is soft, the ear scratches are great, I have a fan for when it is hot and what more can a guy ask for?  Maybe Honey?

7/7/10 - Slick has been here almost 3 weeks and is quite the gentleman. So far,
he still is only socializing with Clara. The others are too playful and
he still has to lead a very quiet life because of his heartworm treatment.
After breakfast this morning he was out for his 'constitutional' and
spotted the neighbor and her dogs walking in her driveway. He stood on
the deck and barked, just one bark! Then he went to the fence and
watched as they returned to their house.
Slick is in a wire crate and has a fan to keep the air moving and water
is available at all times. We had 94.6° here yesterday and all animals
took it very easy.

6/28/10 - Hey, folks, this is Slick!
Well, I have landed in a not too bad spot. I have a very comfortable bed in a crate where I can see everything that is going on. I get two pretty tasty meals a day and lots of petting! I love being petted! I had to go to the place that FM called the Vet. Now I don't feel the need to whiz on every bush, step or whatever in the yard. Much less work. I also don't have that awful toothache that I used to have.
Anyway, because of something that is wrong with me, I am not allowed to run and play. FM keeps telling me that eventually I will be able to. She told me that I have worms in my heart and that the Vet gave me medicine. I don't think I feel sick! We do have a problem! It is not a little problem!
When we first get up in the morning and after we all eat, we all have to go outside to potty. That is all well and good, usually, and I don't mind a bit. Sometimes Clara is out with me. Anyway, first thing this morning is not so good. It is raining! Not a little bit of rain, but buckets of
rain! FM expects me to go out in that! Not this guy, I'm not that anxious to have a whiz! I can hold it a long time! I DO NOT DO RAIN!!!! I am a boxer and you know that boxers melt in the rain! At
least I did get toweled off when I did get a little bit of rain on me and that felt pretty good. I think I hear FM coming, so for now, that is all I have to report.
Love, Slick, the most handsome guy!

6/24/10 - Slick went through his traumatic vet stay like a real trooper! I couldn't believe when they told me that they could do everything all at once!!! He had to only have one tooth removed, the rest were fine! They may have cleaned them. I have no idea what the initial vet had in mind when she wrote that he needed a lot of extractions! So, the guy is neutered, up to date on shots, his teeth are taken care of, and his HW treatment is underway. He returns in a month for another visit with the vets. He is on antibiotics for the next month. Small supper tonight and then just low level activity and a regular diet.
He was very glad to see me and just wiggled all over!

6/19/10 - I met Slick's transport after 6 and he seemed resigned to changing vehicles. It was so funny! He got out of her car, saw the open door of mine and got right in! "Oh well, another car, I guess I will ride forever!"
He is a handsome dude! 'Nuff said!
I will call first thing Monday am and get him started on his new life. He has been out in the dog yard by himself and has had a wonderful time semi-trotting about and marking every few steps!
He has not met my gang other than through the gates and crate. Time enough for that later on after he has been here awhile. He saw Angel (cat) and seemed interested, but I took him by the leash and he didn't argue a bit. It will be interesting to see how he is with cats.
Hopefully, good.. He seems a very nice boy and doesn't seem to be shy or anything.

NOTE: Slick has heartworm, ear mites and needs teeth extracted after living with the breeder all this time. Please donate to his care here, or check out the Ebay site where all proceeds go directly to the care of Slick and the other breeder rescued dogs.

6/21/10 - Slick and I met Saturday evening and he proved to be very much the
gentleman.
When we arrived at the Log Cabin I allowed him to explore the yard at
his leisure and then took him inside and showed him his crate.
He crates well and is quiet in the crate.
He has met everyone here and tho' he would like to play, I am not
allowing any activity other than walking when the others are out. When
he is out alone or with Clara he is not engaging in anything strenuous.
I am very impressed with his coat! He appears to be black and white,
but when the light hits him just right there are many "auburn"
highlights. He is handsome!! Also, not black, but very reverse brindle!
I will be taking some pictures today or tomorrow, making his initial vet
app. and getting things lined up so that he can get his treatment.

6/10/10 - Slick has been with me since Monday the 7th of June. He is a very muscular baby. He loves to cuddle and is very well cage trained. He does not bark, even when people come to the door at this point. I have had not issues with him at all. He does like to try and sneak out of the front door but, we are working on that along with "sit". He does not know any commands. But, he comes running when I whistle. He likes to be indoors more than out. He is very well behaved with the children. He does not even lick them. He tries to play, but gets very winded at this point and gets along very well with my other dogs. He is settling down very well. He was scared at first but, is coming out of his shell. He does not like the upstairs to much he will not even try to go up there to see the cats. Even with the gate opened, he knows that boundary and the living room boundary very well.
