| UPDATE 4/7/11 - I adopted Sherman in October 2010. He is a Boxer/Pit mix and when I told everyone they all cringed. Well, they are all singing a different tune now. He is LOVED by everyone he meets and in turn, loves everyone back. He is certainly food motivated and can be quite a begger. Honestly, how to you resist those brown eyes when they are looking plaintively up at you while he rests his head on your leg? He had a bit of separation anxiety when we first got him and we had a small path of destruction to deal with. I think we know what causes his upset so that makes it manageable. He loves to ride in the car and insists he must go. Once in the car, he prefers to ride in the front seat - even if it's already occupied. Sherman is a soft squeaky toy dog who doesn't care AT ALL about balls. He likes bones (likes to hide them) especially if they are small. He has some rawhide bones I bought him but uses those mostly for show. He has to bring you something to show when you come
in the
door...even if he just came in with you, he runs and gets something to show. We did some obedience training and will do some more when the weather warms up. He does really well most of the time, except with COME. I find that his selective hearing clicks in when it's time to COME. He is a couch/bed dog which we can deal with and we were warned - he came that way to us. He's a family member so we deal with it. He also thinks he's a lap dog from time to time and climbs up in the recliner with my husband. It's a sight to see for sure. He also uses the couch for storage. One of the funniest things I discovered early on is that he LOVES apples - especially if he can steal them from the tote. He is a constant delight and keeps us both in stitches all the time. 10/3/10 - I was adopted today! 9/26/10 - Sherm continues to be the perfect dog. He just wants to please and be some family's best buddy. We left him alone today for 5 hours with the run of the house and he and he girls were perfect children. The girls love him because he doesn't have an aggressive bone in his body. Everybody is missing the boat by not calling for Sherm.....but that's OK because if he stays here forever, the entire family has voted him on the island permanently! 9/17/10 - There is really nothing left to say about Sherman. He has blended into the pack and they have welcomed him with open arms. No bad habits, a real cuddler, hasn't destroyed anything, gentle with the girls, good on a leash and best of all......he isn't low maintenance.....he's NO maintenance! We have never seen a foster who wants to be a part of a family as badly as he does. Definite keeper! 9/13/10 - Well, it has been 4 days now that Sherman has graced us with his presence. We have to say, that of all the 22 fosters we have had, Sherman ranks up there in the top 3 as far as manners, overall demeanor, gentleness, and affection are concerned. He has been through a lot in his short life so far and after getting to know him, I see why he survived being hit by a car. Nothing gets him down and I really think the only thing that could possibly break his spirit is if were lost and by himself. He was returned due to separation anxiety when his family left him alone. Easy answer….give him some company and he is perfect. We left the 4 of them alone Sunday for a few hours and came home to an undamaged, unpeed on, unpooped on home. No signs of any separation anxiety because he had company the whole time with his harem. I took him to a convenience store Saturday night and left him in the car by himself for a good 15 minutes, watching him but he couldn’t see me. He moved from the back to the from, sat in the driver’s seat and waited patiently for me to return. Sherm is great with the girls and has started to play with Mabel but very gently. He puts his mouth around her leg or ankle or neck but never actually touches her even though Mabel does touch. He is very obedient, listens well, good on a leash and really just wants a family to please. Can’t say enough good about him. If you want a low maintenance dog and you have at least one to keep him company…..Sherman is your man! 9/9/10 - I moved today and boy am I a happy boy! I now live with 3 hot chicks who have a tiki bar and a pool. By 3 PM they were fanning me and feeding me treats. Life is good. They say they are going to get to know me better before they brag about me so until then......may all your dreams be full of bones and your water dish have those little umbrellas in it. 8/30/10 - I'm bbbaaaaaaackkkkkkkk!!! I loved you guys so much, I just couldn't stay away! I went to live in a home that didn't have another dog to play with. Well, being the only dog around got kinda boring and made me nervous. So, when I was by myself, I learned to jump the 8 foot fence they had up to go find my own friends. Not the best choice, I see that now. So I'm just chilling here until you're ready for me. Soooooo get ready!! Sherman came back into rescue this weekend. He needs another dog to hang out with when there is no one home. If he's alone, he gets into trouble and doesn't do well in the crate. If he's off-leash, alone in the back yard, he is a great jumper and goes walkabout. So today, he got to spend a nice day by the pool with his old pal, Rocky, and is still just one of the sweetest pups to ever jump in my car. (ready, willing, and eager). He'll be destressing for a little while at doggie camp and then he'll be all set for you. Line forms to the left! Don't wait! UPDATE 7/19/10 - Sherman is slowly but surely getting used to living with us and adjusting to our routine. We were surprised to learn that he enjoys chewing furniture a bit more than toys and we have since replaced all out window treatments and are planning on buying a new couch set in the next few weeks since he has left his mark on our old one. We are rolling with the punches but truly enjoying his antics and loving personality. He enjoys running around the neighborhood, diving in the water at our camp, playing with his toys and lounging around the house. His favorite treats are ice cubes and he has learned roll over and paw in just a few short weeks. He begins obedience class July 28th but has already made great improvement when walking on a leash and responds to heal quite nicely. He comes when he is called, sit and lays down when he is told. He gets along famously with our cousins 3 dogs (a boxer, boston terrier and a poodle) and is never too tired to run around with them. After obedience class is complete I hope to start him in agility training, he excels at all things active and I think it would give him something challenging to do with all that energy. We will keep you updated on his progress as time goes on, but we love him dearly and are happy (since the couch incident) that we picked him! UPDATE 6/28/10 - Sherman is adjusting nicely to his new life with us. The first night we brough him home he met the other dogs in our family pack and got along wonderfully with my cousins boxer Marley. After a long and tiring evening of playing he slept in our bed I stayed home with him the first 2 days and began to work with him on the leash, which is his largest issue. He is slowly but surely getting better and doesn't pull as much in response to "heal". He has found our window screen and has ripped two of them so he is no longer left alone with open windows. On Thursday night he encoutered a skunk in our back yard and needless to say got sprayed (in the face). The smell at this point is more or less gone and he seems to be less interested in small rodents since that encounter. He had a play date with Marley and Ziggy yesterday and enjoyed playing keep away with a stuffed dragon in the backyard. 6/20/10 - I was adopted today! 5/30/10 - Hi, Sherman here. I want to wish everyone a Happy Memorial Day. And I want to remind everyone to keep our living and fallen servicemen and women in their thoughts and prayers. That's easy for me to do since I was named after General Sherman, and the Sherman tank that supported our troops in years past. Mom named me after the Sherman tank because I am a strong guy. But I have a soft and gentle side, too and that is what I like to show everyone that I get to meet. And today I got to hang out with that nice family across the street for a little while, showing them my soft and gentle side until mom came and brought me back home again. (I love mom and my foster family but I just can't keep myself from meeting new people whenever I can.) Mom had left open one of the gates last night after she got done mowing the yard, and when dad let us out this morning, he didn't notice it. SO... while mom was sleeping I trotted across the street where they have three kids. I LOVED visiting!!!!! ANd they LOVED me!!! I got to hear mom agree with Bob and Rebecca that I was such a sweetie! "What a happy, friendly guy" was another compliment. (Doesn't everyone like hearing people say nice things about them!?!) The mom talked about how I got into rescue and how I was still looking for my! forever family, and I was thinking maybe THIS family...but then they talked about how their Lab is feeling his age and isn't up to a youngster like me. Oh well. Maybe YOU will be my forever family? I'm here and I am ready to be YOURS! 5/26/10 - Sherman had a blast at the BRAD in Portland--he LOVES meeting everybody, and that was a great place to meet people and canines! He wagged his tail like there was no tomorrow for everyone, and luckily there weren't any walls for him to knock it into. So his tail was happy and so was I! Here at home, he continues to be part of OUR family, but is waiting for HIS family. Sherman would love to live with children, and/or another dog. He would probably love to be a jogging companion--because he loves going out on a leash. Sherman enjoys sunbathing on the deck. Or laying at my feet while I type on the computer. He'll sleep with me when he's invited, but settles into his crate (my bedside table) for the night when he isn't. All in all he's an easy guy to be around--and we'll keep him around us until he finds his forever family. I just can't believe that that hasn't happened yet! 5/5/10 - Hi! Sherman here again. BOY DID I HAVE FUN!!! Mom took me to the Dog Park. I met a bunch of other dogs there and a bunch of their people and I loved everyone. I got to run and run. This nice Black guy let me play chase and boy could he run! There was an old Spotted lady there and she just kept barking so nobody bothered her. Then two more guys and their family came. This big Golden wasn't very nice, though. He kept trying to hump everybody else--he even chased that nice Black guy under the park bench! Then his Pit brother started growling so mom called me over and told all the other people that even though I was having fun she wasn't so we needed to go. I hope she has more fun next time we go so I can stay longer! 4/24/10 - Hi guys, Sherman here! I just wanted to tell everyone what a good boy I have been, always helping my mom. First of all, if she leaves any food on the counter I quickly eat it so that the ants and mice that might come around don't know that sometimes there is food in this house. Mom doesn't know what a help that that is, but I do! Then, I heard her talking about finding Lucky a forever home, and how happy she is that he found the home he deserves. And I figured that I'd better help her start looking for a forever home for me (even though I love it here) because it took her almost a YEAR to find Lucky's. Whew, I don't want to wait that long. So since I love meeting people, I looked for a way out of the big yard we have here. And I found it! I could climb that big rock wall! So I did, and I started checking out people to see if they would be my new family. But the first person I met already had a house full of German Shepherd. I guess that's OK for them I played with the German Shepherd for a while, which was great fun, and then mom came and took me for a ride back to our house. The next day, I couldn't climb the wall again. Mom had covered the top! So I found a way I could squeeze under another part of the fence. This time I met this really nice lady. But she already had a house full of Brittany's, and they didn't want to play with me while they were on their leashes taking a walk. SO she brought me back home and mom came and answered the door to let me back in. I guess this finding a forever home is harder than I thought! Yesterday while mom was down at the river, I figured I'd go looking again. But mom had fixed that party of the fence so I couldn't squeeze through it there. Then I found a soft muddy spot I could dig in so that I could fit under the fence! I dug and dug and fit under the fence so I could go looking again. No luck! This time I found a nice young guy, but he read my tag and brought me back to mom's house again! So mom had a big talk with me and told me that there is this computer thing she uses to find forever homes. And that is why I am writing now. PLEASE help me find my forever home! I don't want to have to find another way out of mom's yard. I love my foster mom and she loves me, but I want a family that will love me forever as their very own! I can share it with another dog because I love dogs, and I love kids, and I think I like cats, too--but no one has let me touch one yet so I'm not positive. 3/21/10 - Sherman wowed everyone he met at the BRAD at the Kennel Shop in Carrboro Maine yesterday. He met people and dogs of varying ages and sizes and loved everyone--and everyone loved him! His only regret is that there was not a large play yard there, because he would have loved to run and play with the dogs he met. I still say that he hasn't met anyone he hasn't loved! He even sniffed the cage of a cat available for adoption, and did nothing but wag his tail. So I am confident that he would be fine with a cat--especially one who know how to boss a dog around! At home at the Riverview he conked right out after his three exciting hours. Then a quiet evening at home until night time when he ambled into his crate to settle down for a long snooze. Me too! 3/11/10 - Happy, Happy Happy!!! This guy is so happy he has "Happy Tail". Which means that I am not so happy because the tip of his tail is constantly opening up and bleeding. It must hurt him SO much! We are trying some things to help it heal up--wish us luck! Then I will be as happy as he is. Sherman has a mani-pedi the other night here in the Spa at the Riverview--aka my living room. He had not one bit of an issue with the nail clippers or the Dremel tool. Maybe he had these things done to him in his former life, but he was still so laid back about the process I was amazed. (I wish Rocky would tolerate the same procedures!) And on our most recent walk, we went downtown. And Sherman was one big tail wagging happy fellow to meet all of the people that were also walking around. No barking, just wagging. He was not quite as well behaved toward the dogs we passed--he is just so strong and he SO wants to have a meet and greet play date with them all! 3/6/10 - This gem of a guy is probably wondering why I haven't been singing his praises..and it certainly has nothing to do with him! (I've just been so busy...) Anyway, we here at the Riverview have nothing negative to say about this great guy. And today, we saw another of his sterling qualities. Sherman got out into the front yard by accident. And we live on a busy road so I was frantic that something could happen. But the instant I called him he turned back to me with tail wagging and all emergencies were averted! Thank heavens! We love him to pieces here, but want everyone to know that they are missing out on an opportunity to acquire a loving companion with a great personality! 2/17/10 - Some "firsts' for Sherman... He had his first leash walk with the Gentle Leader. Like other dogs he hated it at first, but by the end of our walk he had accepted it, and we both enjoyed the walk. Without it he does pull so hard that only a strong adult could safely manage him. With a Gentle Leader I think he would make someone a great jogging buddy! Last night we had snow up here in Maine. Only a few inches, but he seemed to enjoy running through all of that white stuff. Now I am not saying that he never experienced snow in New Jersey, (although they've had more down there this year than we have) but it was the first time I got to see him having fun romping in the whiteness. And a "second"--his return trip to the Vet to have his stitches removed. And again he was a perfect little patient who was adored by everyone (even some of the other customers!) AND he got to sniff a kitty in her crate and he just kept wagging that long tail at her like he wanted to play.. SO... I think we can change him to "CATS: Probably", because I think he would be OK with a cat that already knew how to set some limits on a playful dog. 2/9/10 - Sherman has been here at the Riverview for a week! Time DOES fly by when you are having fun. HE is such a happy fellow. Sherman has been a perfect guest here. He gets along great with both other males, and has learned that Lucky will play with him while Rocky will not. He has also learned that rough housing is allowed only outside. He also knows that outside is where he needs to do his business--not a single accident in the house! (Although his first day here we had one marking episode indoors) Not only has he learned to tolerate the crate at night, he now even sleeps in it all night long without being locked in. He HAS discovered the couches--I even spotted him up on one last night tail end to end with Lucky. looking like nearly matching fawn bookends. And this morning he discovered our bed. Apparently even though he isn't all Boxer he has that Boxer personality trait of "loving his comfort"! And while he is perfectly comfortable here, we know that he would LOVE to get comfortable in his own forever home. 2/6/10 - Sherman has earned full house privileges, and gets along wonderfully with both Lucky and Rocky. Lucky will play with him a little, but he has already learned that Rocky has no interest in playing with anybody. And he has learned that no roughhousing is allowed in the house, just outside. He seems like a smart guy--I hope he learns to stop counter surfing soon, too. Sherman goes into his nighttime crate-igloo without any assistance and sleeps through the night--as late into the morning as I do. We also crate him during the day when no one is home to supervise all three dogs, and he does fine then, too. I put a Kong filled with kibble and peanut butter in it and that occupies his mind and his mouth for a while. He does like to chew and has found lots of chew toys here to enjoy. And thankfully he hasn't tried to 'enjoy' anything that is not supposed to be chewed. Poor Sherman is saddled with a full length tail. That means that he is constantly smacking the tip into things. Like Rocky's face, or my glass of water on the coffee table (thankfully just water!). Or the edge of the door jamb so it starts bleeding. That happens a lot. It usually has a pink tip (instead of white) because he is such a happy guy. 2/3/10 - Jersey-boy has a new name--a REAL name...Sherman...taadaa! I asked my Vet and all of his staff to help me think of a name that fit this fantastic guy and that is what they came up with. I LOVE it for him! We also need to change a few items on his info--he is 65 pounds (and gaining!) and his age is estimated to be between two and three years, so let's call him 2 and 1/2. And now he is neutered and UTD on his shots, and ready for his new home. You might just have to get on line to adopt this guy (only kidding) because EVERYONE at the office fell in love with him just like I had predicted they would. He's snoozing at my feet in the computer room after returning home. I'm guessing he's a bit tuckered out form the surgery and anesthesia, because he didn't even eat all of his dinner. But his happy personality is still shining through--I got a tail wag when I walked in the door. 2/1/10 - Well, we're still trying out names to see if any we can think of get a reaction. So far, no luck! But we've been lucky in other ways. Whoever he is, he is a sweet happy boy! He slept through the night in the crate next to my bed. We had to turn it into an indoor doggie igloo because he was chilly even in our bedroom. So I just hung a couple more blankets over the wire crate and he settled right down. He also crated fine during the day while we were at work. Now I am not saying that he loves the crate, but he's cooperating. We'll be thinking about some introductions tomorrow, because all the signs for one big happy family are there! Yeah! 1/31/10 - NJ Boy has arrived in Maine at the Riverview Boxer Hotel. He is a bit skinny but oh-so-sweet! He rode quietly in all of the transporter's cars on the long drive, and impressed all of them with his gentleness and friendliness. But NOT with his leash manners--he doesn't have any of them yet! We'll be trying out some new names to see if he responds to anything, but for now he's still NJ Boy. He wandered around our backyard spritzing everywhere, and pooped, too, so he was being a good boy. And he wagged his tail through the baby gates at both Lucky and Rocky--who wagged their nubs right back at him. We'll continue to keep everybody separated for a few more days at the least, although I do think that introductions will go well when they do happen. |
