| UPDATE 10/11/11 - It is hard to believe we have had Samson for a year. He is so much a part of our family. He is particularly fond of Mom since she is home during the day. He pretty much follows her every step- and is sometimes is a bit nosey! He just had his yearly check up and shots, he has gained 7 lbs in a year- we will have to watch the amount of treats he gets. We still have yet to get him within petting distance of any small children. The hair on his back stands up and he gets a look of uncertainty on his face followed by growling and barking. So, we pretty much avoid direct interaction with kids. Occasionally, we will walk by kids and he is fine, but if we were to walk by a soccer game the "faux-hawk" immediately appears on his back. He must have had a bad experience or incident the past. He loves to play with his family, but can be a bit rough- so we feel avoiding small children is best. Our two cats have become more comfortable with him and will even lay at opposite ends of t
he
couch- as long as a human is there. Samson does get jealous if a cat is in Moms lap and will weasle his way over to get her attention. He absolutely loves to go for his daily walks and to ride in the car!! It can be a bit difficult to get him out of the car, since he loves it so much. He is a wonderful boy! UPDATE 4/9/11 - Samson is doing great. After such as snowy winter he gets so excited when it is time to go outside or for his walk. He loves to run at full speed in circles around our pool in the backyard. He has also attempted to catch his stub of a tail when he is showing off. He still is leary of small children, but loves kids over ten. He is very attached to his adoptive Mom and will bark when anyone comes to the door. He loves to go in the car, but is not fond of the gas station attendant he barks and catches them off guard. He loves to snuggle on the couch at night between Mom and Dad and watch TV. He is still curious about our cats, but so far there have been no major issues. UPDATE 1/11/11Samson is such a wonderful dog! He just loves attention and is a great fit for our family. We had so much fun wtih him over the holidays,he loves presents and was a perfect gentleman meeting new people. Samson loves to run around in our backyard, and really enjoys romping around in the snow. He now has more interest in playing with his toys and loves to rough house with the boys. He is very good about stopping when play time is over. So far everthing has been great. UPDATE 12/11/10 - Samson contiues to do well with his new home. He is a real character. The Thanksgiving break was very exciting for him. Our two sons were home from college and he loved all the attention. When I went to Connecticut to pick up our middle son, it was love at first sight. He insisted on sitting in my son's lap, in the front seat for the two hour ride. He added plenty of kisses the whole ride home. he had met our oldest two weeks after we adopted him and was a bit unsure of him, but this time he greeted him very affectionately. We have been attending obedience classes and he contiues to do well. Our last class is this week. He listens better and doesn't pull when walking as much. He interacts well with the other dogs and their families, including the young children. However, when we encounter a child on our walks, he still reacts with raised fur and a growl. We think he may be frightened by small kids or feel intimidated from a past experience. We are aware of this behavior and will continue to work with him to overcome his fear. He is still chasing our cats, but knows he will never with the race. UPDATE 11/11/10 - Samson continues to bring us joy and many laughs each day. He has settled in nicely with our daily routine. We take lots of walks and he just loves riding in the car. We started obedience training and he is learning his manners very quickly. He gets very excited each evening when Dad gets home and he loves to roughhouse with Dad. He has been a perfect gentleman with the two resident cats and occasionally will taste their food. They are still a bit fearful of him, but are becoming more comfortable each day with his company. We are still working with him on getting acquainted with small children. He is a bit unsure around them and he tends to growl, we aren't sure if he may have had an issue in the past. We will keep a close watch on this. UPDATE 10/19/10 - Samson is loving his new home. He is still trying to make friends with our two cats. They are overwhelmed by his size and energy. The minute he sees his leash he gets excited, jumps aroundand does his kidney dance. Samson loves to take walks and explore the new neighborhood and has met a couple of new dogs and was fine with them. We took him to meet our vet and they all loved him. He loves to jump on the beds and furniture, we are working to correct this a bit and encourage him to sit in his designated recliner. He has been doing much better with that. He enjoys riding in the car, but is a bit stubborn when it's time to get out. He is very animated and loves to talk. He has been doing well sleeping in his crate at night, he goes right in for us. We look forward getting to know him better. 10/12/10 - I was adopted today! 10/7/10 - Samson has been here for a few days now and is really starting to feel at home, so at home that he was trying to be the pack leader. Samson is a handsome boy who is very affectionate but who is also very stubborn and can be a little defiant and will try to take over. If you give him an inch, he is taking a yard he needs an owner that is willing to commit to working with him at obedience training. He is very smart and with the right training he is going to be a great companion. When Samson starts to get a little rambunctious I tell him "no, go lay down" and he immediately will go to his crate, however, not without a little flip back talk. He is very vocal, its a growly sound, typical boxer talk and he is trying to get his way right up until the last second but once he's in the crate he will just lay down with the door of the crate open until I tell him "ok, you can come out now". He gets very excited when we come home from work and when he is first let out the crate in the morning and he is jumpy but settles down pretty quick when we tell him "no jumping". Samson needs regular exercise to burn of some of that excited energy, he loves to go for walks and he loves to play with my two boxers they all get along great. He also knows when its time to relax and settle down at night, he is very good, just curls up where ever we are and is happy to be lazy. Samson has been to the vet, and the vet loved him, she drew some blood for a HW test and he didn't flinch. He has had a bath, he tried his hardest to fight it, but eventually we got him in there and once in he was good just waited for it to be over. When he doesn't want to move, he plants himself to the floor and you can't even budge him. Basically, I would say that Samson is a young boy who may have been able to get his way a lot in the past and will try to be the dominant one, but if you are consistent and you set the boundaries both him and his new owner will be very happy. 10/3/10 - We picked Samson up this afternoon after he traveled approximately 3.5 hours in two different cars then he traveled another hour with us. He is a big boy and so handsome the second we walked over to meet him he was very friendly and happy loves to give kisses, he didn't show any signs of stress. He jumped right in our car and was great the rest of the ride. When we got to the house, my 12 year old daughter ran over to the car and he was so excited couldn't wait to get out of the car and say hi. We went to the back yard and he sniffed every inch, I think he marked every single leave on one of our bushes. We brought our 1 year old male out and we all took a short walk down the street, they got along great, so we then added our female to the walk, again everyone did great so we headed back to the yard for some off leash time. Samson is fine with other dogs exhibits typical boxer behavior running around boxing and he is very vocal. He also lived with cats and got along with the feline instigators. We went on a 3 mile walk on a very busy trail lots of people and other dogs, Samson loved it. He could stand to lose about 10 lbs so the 3 mile walks a few times a week are going to help out. He is a counter surfer so I keep the spray bottle handy he caught on to that real quick and the second he got squirted he got right off the counter. He is a little bit stubborn, he doesn't come when called and if he doesn't want to go they way you are going when he is on the leash, he just stops and he is very strong it's tough to get him to budge. He is so smart when he starts obedience training I think he will do really well. Well, he is exhausted after his long day so that's all I have for now, more to come as we get to know him I know that it will only get better as he settles in. 10/3/10 - Sampson comes to us from some sad owners who have a girl going blind and starting fights with the other dogs out of fear. In their need to make their home safe and the transition less scary, they are forced to give up this boy. The owners report that he's lived with teenage children, 3 other dogs, and cats. They didn't have him when their children were younger. They also report that he likes to be with his humans, loves to play with the other dogs, and will carry on a conversation. |
