UPDATE 6/6/11 - Oskar is doing great. He has fully recovered from his cancer surgery. He seems to have some pain in his hips or hind legs sometimes (a little slow getting up and down) but at other times he's playful and energetic. He's such a good boy!

UPDATE 3/11/11 - Oskar had surgery last month to remove a cancerous tumor on his shoulder. It's a very aggressive cancer and the vet said it's probably a matter months before it comes back, and when it returns they will just do palliative care to make him as comfortable as they can. Of course Oskar doesn't have a clue so he's his usual mellow loving self. So we continue to give him all our love and are thankful we have him for as long as we can.

UPDATE 12/18/10 - Oskar continues to thrive in his new home.  He took his first trip with us  a couple of weeks ago to meet some of our relatives and came through with flying colors.  Our neighbors continue to comment on how well he looks from when he first got to our house.  Again thanks to Second Chance for allowing Oskar to be a part of our home.

UPDATE 11/13/10 - Oskar has put on a little more weight and is looking handsome and healthy, but he still eats like every morsel is his last! His good appetite has rubbed off on Sophie, who was often indifferent to her food, and her eagerness to go in her crate has helped Oskar learn it's not so bad. He fits in so well in our house we hope his early hardships are long forgotten.

UPDATE 10/11/10 - Oskar is doing great.  The wounds on his throat are almost completely healed and his coat is now nice & soft. He still has a little ways to go but has put on some weight. After the first obedience class we were able to teach him to sit & wait for our "OKAY!" before he eats, and to go to his bowl and not Sophie's.
He & Sophie are best buddies, they entertain us with their wrestling and jumping and running in the yard. Oskar's not as wiggly as Sophie but when he's excited (first thing in the morning, when we come home, etc) he jumps -- not on us, around us!

UPDATE 9/18/10 - Since Ranger had only known the name Ranger since he was put in a shelter in August, and didn't seem to respond to the name, we now call him Oskar (FM is kind of a nut for German names for this German breed). Oskar is coming out of his shell. When we first met him a week ago he seemed to like sleeping and eating and not much else. He still LOVES to eat but he now enjoys playing with us and with Sophie, female boxer also age 4. He is sweet and gentle and we love him.
We use different collars to tell Oskar apart from Sophie, also a fawn with a black (and a little grey) mask. It's easy when they're together but tricky when you just see one at a time!
Oskar is starting to put some weight on and his assorted incisions and "battle" scars are healing nicely. His coat is softening and the crazy shedding is all but gone.  He started obedience training Tuesday and is doing well. He doesn't like "Down" but we'll keep at it. He's already much better on the leash.
We're thankful to SCBR for finding Oskar for us!

9/11/10 - Ranger has been adopted!

9/5/10
- Well the handsome boy Ranger arrived today, and I am so impressed already by his awesome disposition. He is recovering from an infection of the skin on his neck, and it looks so much better now that it's healing, there may be some scaring but he is so handsome that you'll never even notice.
Ranger spent a busy day traveling then meeting the 4 resident dogs here, and he was very happy to just move right in and make himself one of the pack, males and females, didn't make a bit of difference to him, he was very comfortable with all, big and small. What did surprise me was his appetite, he was more than ready for his dinner and ate every last kibble, later in the evening I give all my dogs and fosters cookies, he was so gentle taking the biscuit from my fingers that I didn't even hesitate to give him a few more.....he remained courteous and patiently waited his turn behind the baby gate while everyone enjoyed their evening snack.
He is scheduled to be neutered and brought up to date on his shots, after that this boy is going to make some home very happy.

8/27/10 - Ranger has merged in with our pack! He is one really nice boy. He allowed the others to have their smell and stood there for the once over. He has wonderful manners when meeting other canines. All is well. He is a very nice, calm boy. He does love to have a run in the backyard, but once that is done he comes into the house and lays with the other dogs.
We moved his crate into our room for nighttime sleeping and that has been the key to getting a good night sleep. This little guy just wants to be with people. He just loves his humans and canine companions. I think he would be fine not being crated at night, but until he is neutered, I would prefer to keep him in the crate, just in case.
During the day when we are home, Ranger is out and about with the 3 resident dogs here. He is learning to be in his crate when I am at work. From what my kids said he was quiet on the third day that I left for work.....day 1 & 2 I heard him barking as I drove out the driveway. He has already learned the routine and mirrors my dogs with everything. I think this could be one of the key factors to Ranger learning to be in his crate during the day. With the kids home for summer break, they are not crated as long as they normally would be. Ranger is just a sweet little guy that wants a human companion to love. Get your applications in, he will be going fast!

8/23/10 - Well night number two Ranger didn't do much better in his crate. He cried and barked for about an hour and then finally settled down. He will be merged with my dogs possibly tomorrow.....as for tonight, we may move his crate into our room to see if he does better. My guess is, that he will be great. He just LOVES to have someone with him. I was working on the computer this morning out of sight of Ranger because he was stuck in the kitchen and he just whined and whined. I carried my laptop to the kitchen table and he is already asleep at my feet! He just loves to be with you. He continues to be a wonderful dog. He has a gentleness about him which is just a great quality. He is suppose to be a 2 year old, but his personality is like that of my 5 year old boxer, not a lanky high strung youth. When outside, he likes to run and run. He likes to chase his humans and play tag. He still needs to be neutered but when he is ready to go, he will go quickly. This is really a wonderful boy, get your apps in for him now!

- Ranger was picked up today. He is a really calm boy. He currently cries while in the crate, but when I take him outside, he just loves to walk around. Ranger and I spent at least a half hour on the outside swing. He just laid down and watched children ride by on bikes. No barking, no running toward the children. It is still early, but he seems like a dream. Ranger saw my dogs and immediately took a bow stance. He looked like he was ready to play, but he will need to wait a few more days for that. Get your applications in, this boy won't be here long.
