| UPDATE 3/20/10 - Sam's doing GREAT! After all of his health scares, we think he's finally UTI free and on the road to a healthy life. A big thank-you to SCBR for helping us keep Sammers through his health issues. We would have been heartbroken to give him up.
So...after his 3rd UTI, the decision was made to go forth with x-ray and ultrasound to determine if there were anatomical issues leading to his chronic infections. The end result was that Sam is structurally sound and his vet seems to think that his recent neuter will help curb the UTI issue because apparently Sam-man had some extra skin on his twig and berries. Here's hoping he stays UTI-free. We're watching like hawks everytime he pees to make sure he stays clear. Otherwise, he's doing really well. He's still not a happy camper when we leave the house but he's getting better about having to follow me everywhere I go when I am home. It helps that our upstairs tenant takes Sam when we have to be away from home for the better part of the day. We're fortunate that he doesn't seem to mind "dog-sitting" for us and he actually seems to enjoy it. And Sam, for his part, doesn't mind at all! The kids love him tons and now that the weather is warm, they spend a lot of time outside with him. He's a bit rough when he's outside, but he's easily redirected and it usually only takes one correction for him to remember that he has to be gentle with the little ones. Puppy class is also going well. Sam-man loves loves loves his Ruby Roo (the female boxer in our class). We've exchanged numbers with Ruby's mom and are planning play dates for these two boxer babes. All-in-all....things here are coming along just fine. :-) Thanks again, SCBR, for your help! UPDATE 2/9/10 - Sam continues to do really well with us. We just love him to bits!!! He has begun his obedience training and had his second class this past weekend. We really look forward to his obedience class, mostly because he gets a chance to really play with other dogs. There's a lab puppy in his class and a female boxer puppy. Sam's true boxer self shines bright, especially with his boxer "girlfriend." Sam continues to exhibit some separation anxiety issues. He does NOT like to be left alone at all. If I leave the room, he must follow me to the next room. We have decided to postpone a trip we had planned for March as a result as we do not feel he would handle the travel well and our 2nd floor tenant would be unavailable to spend all day with him. We're working with Sam on this, particularly in the backyard where Sam absolutely refuses to leave the fence if nobody is not actually in the fenced in part with him. We have had some health concerns with Sam but honestly, I suspect we may just have a vet that's a bit "over eager" to put it kindly. Basically, Sam came to us with a UTI and then recently, had a second UTI. The vet is concerned that the frequency of UTIs may be caused by a polyp or other structural issue with Sam. He's already called for some expensive tests to determine the exact type of bacteria causing Sam's UTI and is now calling for the same expensive tests (at around $200) to be sure that the UTI is completely cleared. We're content to watch Sam to see if the UTI recurs, as opposed to spending so much money. If Sam does continue to have chronic UTIs and requires more indepth medical intervention, we might have to consider surrendering him as we simply do not have the money for a pup with special needs. We would be devastated as we love him to bits...but it wouldn't be fair to him to not get the medical care he would need. We'll keep you all posted on that. For now, his UTI seems to be clearing up just fine...we're continuing his meds for another week or so to be sure. And then we'll wait and see what happens. Otherwise...Sam is happy, gets along great with the kids and is doing well. He has a permanent spot located under the baby's highchair where he loves to sit and wait for whatever tasty things may be bestowed upon him. I think the baby is his favorite...lol. UPDATE 1/17/10 - Sam has spent his first full week with us and he's doing really well. He's adjusted to our family and is even finding a way to rest despite the numerous clamoring youngsters around here. He met the vet this week and did such a good job! We did find out that he was positive for Giardia so he's being treated for that. Obedience training has been scheduled and will begin at the end of January. Although he was REALLY well behaved his first few days, the honeymoon period has ended, so to speak, and his true naughty behaviors are shining through. We now know that the dirty diaper pail can NOT ever be left available to him...lol. He seems to have a real affinity for those dirty cloth diapers. Our children LOVE him. The other day, my oldest (the 4 yr old) told him that he was "the bestest doggie ever" and that she was so glad he came to our house. I'm not sure she still felt that way after he found her Barbie though. But we're working on that. Otherwise, things are well. A guard dog he isn't...he'd much rather be curled up in our lap. But it's ok...we love him to bits. :-) 1/10/10 - Oliver has been adopted! 12/18/09 - We've added some videos of Olly learning from the best! (scroll down a little) Listen for the baby wookie noises our boy is teaching him to make as they wrestle! Just so cute!! (Sorry, you can't have the big guy, he's ours, even if he upstages Olly sometimes during the video.) 12/14/09 - Olly has adjusted to his new foster home and the lack of siblings pretty well over the last several days. His intelligence has become quite obvious to us and has even been surprising at times! He is quite good at sitting and waiting for his food, usually only needing a reminder or two to wait until I say ok. (He learned that on his second day with us!) I'm sure it helped having my boys to mimic but I didn't expect a 12 week old puppy to be able to do that! He responds quite well to my warning sounds if he's chewing on something he shouldn't and is learning how to be nice to the resident kitty. She is quite the attractive play mate since she is more his size :) As his previous foster mom noted, he is a naturally dominant puppy. He needs some work on manners like most puppies do but in some ways his dominant, fearless attitude is working out to his benefit here. He isn't scared of our big 80 pound boxer boys and tries his best to keep up in chase and tug! He would definitely enjoy having another dog around to play with and seems like he would adjust fine to most adult dogs as he's not easily intimidated, so he would probably fit in well to any house hold. He's learning not to jump on people, how to behave and play appropriately with other dogs, and how to not be bossy. We're also making great progress with potty training. Although we still have a few accidents in the house (to be expected for this age) he is very good about going outside when we bring him out and tell him to "go potty." If we start moving him to the door when we see him sniffing around he now realizes he's supposed to wait until he gets outside which is great progress for the 5 days he's been with us. He has also learned stairs and will go up and down the back porch stairs without a problem. The inside stairs to get to the second floor are much more scary though, but up isn't so bad so he's done that by himself. We're still working on the going down part :). He has also figured out how to get on the couch. Desperation will do that! He is such a snuggle bug that when he's not running and chasing and pouncing on a toy he wants to be snuggled next to you chewing on a bone or napping. He has been doing better and better at going in his crate. He goes in very easily with his peanut butter kong and now only whines for a couple minutes before settling down. He sleeps through the night but since we go to bed at around 9:00 he's ready to get up by 5:30. Although we love having Olly here he would love to have a forever home of his own. Give him and yourselves one of the most enjoyable and long lasting gifts this holiday season and make Oliver a member of your family! 11/16/09 - Hi Folks, my name is Oliver. I am the biggest boy of the bunch. Yup the ringleader, the head honcho, the top banana so you get the gist. Don't get me wrong though, I am a cuddly one. My FM keeps calling me her teddy bear????? I thought I was a dog. Oh well, as long as she cuddles with me she can call me anything she wants. I really love to play with my sibs. We have so much fun. Our new FM says that she loves puppies and we are awesome. She was quite surprised that we are so well trained. We do our duty on the newspaper that she has laid out. We sleep through the night without a peep (bark or wimper). We do very well when we are alone. Met the cat today. He was alright I guess. He was the same size as me. I would LOVE to come home and meet my new forever family. Will you take me home for the holidays? I promise to be good and and give you a lifetime of wonderful memories. 11/12/09 - Clancie's boys will be here!!! Clancie was a female fawn boxer who gave birth to these little guys and then didn't live through the day. Someone who rescues orphaned squirrels bottle fed them for their first few weeks and now they're the healthy guys you see here- with a hint of the "divil" in their eyes! Aren't you completely in love??? I know, I am!! I just bet that little fawn is the ringleader! |
