| UPDATE 8/14/10 - Nicki has graduated from obedience classes. She was the star pupil the last night there, a far cry from where she started!
She is now officially worm free! Yea! She will also be taking her first trip to NC to see her grandparents tomorrow. Since she has ridden in the car before with no problems, we aren't anticipating any, but we'll be ready just in case! We've found that she has a fondness for stuffed animals. The children are learning that they have to keep them picked up and put away. The latest casualty, a manatee. Fortunately, she doesn't eat the stuffed animals, she just likes to shred them! UPDATE 7/15/10 - Nicki is doing well. She's in obedience class and has a hard time paying attention there with all the other dogs, but does great at home when we do our homework. She is even taking commands from our son. The worms seem to be gone, though we won't know for sure until we get another test done at the end of the month. She seems to be more comfortable with us every day and more and more of her personality is coming out. She doesn't bark often, but when she does, you better pay attention. I think that will change as she continues to settle in. Mostly, she just likes to cuddle and be with her people! UPDATE 6/15/10 - Nicki is adjusting wonderfully. She feels right at home, has disemboweled 3 stuffed animals, thankfully they were hers, not the kids'! She is still suffering from worms, nasty little critters. We're treating her and following Doctor's orders in hopes that this will be the last round. Looking forward to starting dog kindergarten next week. The only thing I think she needs to work on is pawing. She loves to put her paw on you every time you sit down. We know she's just letting us know that she loves us, but it does scratch! She's learning to just lay her head on us, so hopefully training will help. Of course, there is the little problem of being a cocker spaniel in boxer clothing, she gets so excited that she pees on the floor every time her daddy comes home. Perhaps we can put a stop to that some day as well! In the meantime, daddy just takes her out immediately regardless of her last potty break. Nicki is starting to walk a little better on the leash. She's been a pokey little puppy, but as she's settled in, she's started to keep up with her daddy on walks through the neighborhood. She loves the children, even found her asleep on our son's bed one night. She's a love dog! UPDATE 5/23/10 - Nicki is a total lovebug! She loves to slither her way into our laps while we sit on the sofa. Once, she made it all the way up before we realized what she had done! She is adjusting well, loves both the children and is even taking her "kennel up" command well, as long as there is a biscuit in sight. She enjoys her morning and evening walks with her daddy, though she doesn't like to keep up. Pokey little puppy! We have been to see Dr. Arnie and he was very pleased with both her health and disposition. He would like to see her put on about 10 pounds as she is underweight. Shouldn't be a problem with 2 kids that love to give her treats. She still tested positive for hookworms, but has been given another dose of dewormer and will be checked again in another week. Nicki rides in the car wonderfully. The first full day she was here, she ran errands with us in the back of the car. The Y, the vet, and of course Petco. She got new jewelry for her collar (name tag) and a few new treats. Then our neighbor dog brought her a welcome home bag full of toys and treats! She has more toys now than she knows what to do with, literally, she hasn't played with any yet! She has been signed up for obedience classes not far from home and will hopefully do well. In the meantime, we are working on "kennel up" and "stay". She knows "sit" pretty well and will "stay" as long as she can see us. She is much better at going in her kennel than she was a week ago, so it seems as if she is getting used to us and our craziness! 5/16/10 - Nicki has been adopted! 5/9/10 - Nicki was able to meet the three resident dogs today. It has been 8 days since her arrival and we were very excited to get all the dogs together. So far, everything is going great, but we are keeping a close eye on them for obvious reasons. Nicki seems to really enjoy being with the entire family. She continues to be a happy and excited little girl. Her size is what I would consider a nice medium size and when she is at a proper weight she will probably weigh maybe 60 pounds. She is beautiful! She wants to meet and greet everyone and so far I think she could live with any age child. She likes to give kisses! I bet she would love a nice sticky child that needs to be cleaned up!!! As I mentioned earlier, she was from a shelter and therefore had to be separated from my dogs for fear of kennel cough......so far so good. We did our best to split the time we had between our own dogs and Nicki. She was in a crate in another room and I must say that even though she could hear the activity of the kids and dogs she was mostly quiet....every so often she would cry out when she was brought in from playing outside but she quiets down in a minute or two. This dog is so sweet and gentle and just wants someone to love. We were worried about taking her out for her first "pack" walk. When we would take Nicki outside to do her business and she would see her foster daddy she would try to drag me across the lawn! She is so strong! We had the pulling problem in our minds as we hooked up everyone for their walk.....all I can say is WOW.....what a surprise! She walks BEAUTIFULLY!!!! I have never had a dog that walked so nice on a leash before. It was a perfect Ceasar Milan moment! I can't believe she is still here....what are you waiting for? She is only 2 years old, she is a beautiful girl, she walks wonderfully on a leash, and the best part is that she only wants someone to love!!! Get your applications in, she won't be here long!!! 5/3/10 - The vet said Nicki is a REAL SWEET girl!!!! He was impressed with her demeanor. I told you, yes I did! She was an absolute love. She was hard to hold onto in the waiting room....she wanted to see everyone and everything....she was not allowed to visit on this trip because we wanted to make sure she was healthy. She got a clean bill of health and is now up-to-date on her shots. Her age is 2 at the most. 5/1/10 - Nicki arrived here from North Carolina this morning. Get your applications in on this girl!!!! WOW - what a darling!!! All she wants to do is climb in our laps and kiss us. From what I understand she is about two years old. When I say friendly - I mean I have never seen such a happy, fun loving girl. I have been told that she was turned into a shelter because she was killing the first owners chickens so he decided to give her to his friend (who also had chickens) needless to say, she found her way to the shelter. As you can see from the pictures, she is a bit skinny, but that is an easy fix. She is BEAUTIFUL!!!! |
