| UPDATE 9/3/10 - I don't know why Nella was ever given back to rescue, but I'm so glad we got the oppertunity to adopt such a wonderful dog!!! She is absolutely amazing. All the little quirks she had when we first brought her home have all seemed to work themselves out in the past few weeks. We have been leaving the crate door open at night while we sleep and block off the upstairs and there has been no problem at all. She settles down and sleeps through the night in her crate without any problems. We have started her obedience training last week and out of the 5 other young dogs, she is the 2nd most well behaved. Not to bad if you ask me! She has learned what off, down, and paw means. We have also been working on wait with much success. She sits and waits for her food and waits to go in or out of the house until we say ok. She is such a smart dog!
We love her so much and are very thankful to Second Chance for giving us the oppertunity to bring Nella into our family!! UPDATE 8/9/10 - Nella is wonderful and we LOVE her!! The poor girl had to leave her foster home and sit in a car for 8+ hours with two people she just met and let me tell you, she was such an angel!!! She settled quietly in the back seat looking at the scenery and taking naps. We had to make a quick stop at my mothers, where Nella met her black lab. They soon were best friends and played all over the back yard. She was very excited to finally be in her Forever Home. Nella met our Cat and at first there were no problems. Recently the cat and Nella seem to have had a small dispute over who is queen of the house. We are currently working on this and we seem to be making progress. Nella enjoys her play dates with my mothers dog and the long walks around the neighborhood. She did pull a lot on the leash, but we have put her in a harness and it seems to be making a big difference. She loves to do "puppy races" all over the back yard and to pounce on rocks and sticks. She would love to play with the squirrels too, but all they want to do is run up the trees away from her. She is eating very well and doesn't even mind her crate. We couldn’t have asked for a better dog!!! 8/1/10 - Nella has been adopted! 7/26/10 - Nella came back to SCBR last Friday seems she is reaching adolescence and decided to start getting a bit pushy with the 3 year old in the home. It was decided it was best for everyone that Nella be placed in a different home. I have had no problems with her and my children (ages 7 & 14) We have not had any problems with Nella since she came back other than she started barking/growling when my husband came home from work/golfing. This was also reported in her adoptive home, prior to that she was just a bit shy/weary of men. The first time this happened I was pretty shocked as Nella is usually a pretty quiet dog (unless she hears a noise or is playing with my youngest dog). At any rate Nella jumped up, was looking at him, hackles up with excitement but her nub was wiggling the whole time. Jeff started walking towards her, the barking/grumbling stopped and she busted into one of the best boxer wiggles I have ever seen. This girl has her signals completely mixed up. We will work on this while she is here. She is already getting better with her greetings. Nella's adoptive family said she had some problems in the crate. They said she crated well at night but didn't like it when they left during the day. She is no problem here, quiet as can be in the crate day or night. As a result they left Nella out of her crate when they left. I believe this led to high anxiety for her (she was crated in her prior home) and that may have contributed to some of her behavior. Nella is in a plastic vari-kennel here and maybe they used wire? I am not sure what the difference is but Nella has no problems in her crate when we are home or she is left alone. It is very hot and humid here again today. Nella and her BBF (Best Boxer Friend) Bing play relentlessly. They play so much I keep a close eye on them and when I feel they have had enough one of them goes into the crate for a nap. These two honestly cannot get enough of each other and if one lays down the other goes to initiate play way too soon! Nella is only like this with her BBF - thankfully she leaves my old boys alone - and if it wasn't so darn hot it wouldn't be an issue but I am paranoid about heatstroke. Nella would do great in a home with another young dog to play with, but she has also proved she is very respectful of older dogs so that would work out too. She would also be happy as an only dog assuming you can squeeze some doggie play dates into your schedule. To play it safe it would be best that Nella be adopted to a home with children a bit older. Nella is sweet as can be, loves to lay next to us belly up to get a tummy rub. Loves to play in the hose. She listens well and is truly an easy dog to have here. 7/17/10 - Hey folks....you have another shot at adopting me! I'm back in rescue. It just didn't work out at my forever home. Those little kids were just tooooooo much. So pick up the phone and call! Your wish has come true! UPDATE 6/30/10 - Nella made herself at home the second she walked in the door. You would never know she's only been here a week! She loves the car and goes everywhere with us. She is all wiggles and kisses whenever she meets people while we're out. She loves to bury her bones in the woods. I think we may have to start digging them up when she's not looking and acting like they're new ones because we're going through them like water! She's eating very well and health-wise she's doing great. I'm certain she's put on some weight already. Her stitches are coming out tomorrow. She sleeps through the night in her crate. We don't hear a peep out of her until we get her out in the morning. The only issue we've had with her is growling in the house but she started her obedience class last night and we've consulted two behaviorists so we are hoping this behavior will stop soon. She has already improved tremendously since we made some changes. Otherwise she is doing great. She is learning her commands and doing much better on the leash. Although the squirrels and deer in the backyard really seem to taunt her and sometimes she just can't resist. 6/23/10 - Nella has been adopted! 6/17/10 - Nella was spay today and had a "nothing" lump removed from her leg. It was definitely not anything to worry about but those kind of lumps have the tendency to grow quickly and was in a spot where it would easy get bumped so to the Dr. opted to remove it since she was already under anesthesia. She is heartworm negative and up to date on shots and ready for her new home. She was a super good girl at the vet and even had wiggles for the vet tech who gave her some loving when I picked her up. She is now napping and recovering from her surgery. So now moving on to the even more important details. Nella is housebroke, crate trained and walks OK on leash not a huge puller but there is room for improvement. She has very good house manners and doesn't get herself into trouble, Nella is actually quite laid back for a 1 1/2 year old boxer. Nella isn't much of a jumper she actually prefers to slither her way onto our laps when we sit down. She isn't a nuisance though and gets down when told (assuming you have givien her some loving and an ear rub!) Nella is fabulous with everyone human, canine young/old. She loves the kids and their friends and has no issues welcoming company. She is actually quite submissive with other dogs, my old 10 year old boxer had to give her a quick reprimand (he has issues with his hind legs and Nella was standing on his hind leg - accidentally as it was behind him). She instantly backed off and laid down. Once he got up she ran over and gave him some quick kisses as if to say she was sorry. This little sweetie would be a great fit for most any home. 6/15/10 - Vanilla Rose "Nella" made her way to SCBR today through no fault of her own. With a young child, hectic work schedule, and a baby on the way her family made the sad decision to surrender her to SCBR. Nella lived with 2 cats, a 5 year old, and played constantly with her owner's mother's dog who lived in the other side to the duplex/house. She was sweet as can be when my daughter, sister, and I went to pick her up. She is a tiny little classic fawn boxer girl and very friendly. She jumped into my truck to go for a ride with no hesitation. She seems to enjoy exploring the fenced yard. Nella goes in for her spay on Thursday and after that she will be all set for adoption. She has certainly been a nicely behaved girl so far so I think she will be a great match for most homes. More updates soon! |
