| UPDATE 8/23/10 - Marley is doing good overall and things are improving as time goes on. He has become more playful with his friend next door and enjoys hanging around the house with me. He has improved his behavior a bit when we are out walking but does need more work on how he reacts to strangers and other dogs. We are starting training class for the basics so will see how that goes. Its been a while since I adopted a younger dog so this will be a good training refresher for me also.
He spent a weekend over at my Moms place while I was away. He had a big back yard to run around in and was well behaved while there. She was impressed on how good he was but we didn't get a chance to observe how he will react to her neighbors dogs on the other side of the fence as they were away that weekend. Hope she doesn't change her mind about him next time we are over if he acts up but its a good place to see how and if he is improving as we work on this. Marley has also started to show some signs of stress while I'm away at work. This was a big change for him from the environment at foster with other dogs around to being alone during the day. The neighbor has graciously let her dog come over and stay with Marley now and then and this seems to help him relax during these times. We aren't sure if its anxiety or he's bored or just needs some company. He probably still needs some adjustment time so we are working with him a lot to help him with this. As I usually house 2 dogs its probably time to begin looking for another rescue to join us. UPDATE 7/22/10 - When I first met Marley at his foster home he was a bit nervous but I was aware of his issue with strangers. In a short time he came around and we quickly got to know each other. When it was time to go he jumped right in the truck and was ready to go. That day was also my birthday so our first stop was at my moms house for my obligatory stop in and she also met her new granddog. He was very well behaved while there and that was important because she babysits my dogs at times. When we got home we met up with the neighbors and her dog and all went well. He now heads right for her back porch and looks for his new friends when we are out back. He hasn't quite figured out the play routine yet but as he settles in that is developing. I commend the foster home for the work they did with him as he has been very good in the house and knows his basic manners. He was my shadow for the first few days but is adjusting well to his new surroundings and has found a few comfy spots he likes to relax in. He has a very good nature to him and it seems that as he accepts someone as his friend he will sit right next to them and usually its right on their foot. 7/15/10 - I was adopted today! 6/26/10 - Marley is still continuing to enjoy himself with us. He's made a few friends that have come and gone to their forever homes. He's wondering why he's not going any where. We recently found out that Marley is terrified of thunderstorms. When thunderstorms roll in he starts to pant really hard and prefers to be right next you. We also found out that he loves walking in the creek. It was pretty hot out and the dogs really needed to cool off. So we decided to take the dogs down to the creek. Marley had a blast just walking around checking things out. The water is only a couple feet deep but he ran right through like it was nothing. We are continuing to work on Marley's manners. He has learned to sit and wait for his food as well as sitting to wait to go outside. He has learned commands for down and we are working on shake(or paw). Marley is a very energetic guy and loves taking his walks everyday. Sometimes he gets a little excited though when he sees people that he hasn't met before. Marley is a very loyal pup and loves to be by his owners side. Another good thing is that Marley can be trusted and doesn't need any crating. We decided to stop crating him because he exhibited some stressful behavior. 3/26/10 -Marley is still with us and he's been working on his manners. He is very eager to please. When we go to the door to let him out to potty he sits and waits to be hooked up. Once hooked up we tell him to go and only then does he get up. When it's walk time Marley does the same thing. He sits patiently to be harnessed up, put on a leash and told to come for a walk. Marley loves to go for car rides and does very well as a passenger. We've been working with Marley and how he likes to greet people at the door. We haven't had a lot of people coming over this winter but the few that have Marley seems to really like. At dinner time Marley used to squeeze himself under the table to try and catch scraps. We have worked with him on this as well. Now at dinner time he just finds a spot in the kitchen and lays down. With very little effort this boy will learn anything you want to teach him. Marley continues to play well with the other dogs. He loves playing fetch with any toy that you give him. Marley has been with us for months now and would really like to go to his forever home. 12/29/09 - Marley is doing awesome. Last week we took Marley to 2 pet stores to give him some socialization experience. He did great meeting the people that wanted to pet him and had a blast sniffing out all the neat stuff at his level. The other day we had company come over and I realized something. When Marley gets to meet the person coming into the house by himself he does great. When the other dogs are around he starts to get dominant because he is feeding off of their excitement. We've worked on his dominance and he has improved a lot. We have found that Marley has some crate anxiety though. He will go into it just fine but drools a lot. This beautiful young boy is ready and waiting for his new home. 12/7/09 - Marley is continuing to do very well with us. He's been neutered and is ready to find his forever home. Since he has been with us, he has learned quite a few manners. Whenever we went to open the door to let the dogs out, Marley used to bolt right out. Now, he has learned to sit and wait to be told to go. Another problem Marley had was counter surfing. He has also stopped doing this as well. Marley is a very quick learner and loves to please! Marley does, however, need a strong leader who will enforce boundaries and limitations with him. He demonstrates some dominant behaviors. For instance, when my daughter came home for the weekend Marley wrapped himself around her and wouldn't let go. We backed up on the introductions and started a lot slower with introducing. After we did this Marley became her shadow and had to follow her everywhere she went. We feel Marley will do best in a home where there's not a lot of people coming and going. This little guy can't wait to spend the holidays in his new home!! 11/9/09 - Marley is a beautiful dark fawn with a white chest and toes. He is approximately 1 1/2 years old. He was found wandering around near Syracuse and was rescued. When they found Marley he had kennel cough and a really bad urinary tract infection. Marley has since finished his prescription for these illnesses and is healthy. He's all up to date on his vaccinations and is just waiting to be neutered. Marley is currently living here with 3 other dogs and gets along great with all of them. I've been told he doesn't mind cats. Marley is also very loving with my 3 teenage boys. I'm not sure how he is around younger kids though. Marley sleeps in a crate at night and stays in one when we go out somewhere. He walks great on a leash and loves to take walks. Marley also likes to run around like a maniac in the fenced in yard. When Marley is relaxing he loves to be a little cuddlebug. |
