| UPDATE 8/26/10 - We are still working on Mac's separation anxiety. Unfortunately, his last vet's visit (a few days ago) revealed that he is losing weight. As a result, the vet has postponed giving him his immunizations for 3 weeks until Mac gains some weight. In the meantime, the vet has ordered a full blood workup to rule out any medical problems.
Please note that we can't enroll Mac into an obedience class until he is UTD on his immunizations. In the meantime, my husband and I are working with him on simple commands and socializing him with dogs at the dog park. We have also hired a dog walker to take him out in the afternoon. UPDATE 8/11/10 - An update on Mac: I was able to take the whole week off from work..thankfully, my employer is an animal lover and his beloved dog also suffered from separation anxiety. Mac will begin his crate training tonight and we will slowly and positively introduce him to the crate. His leash skills have improved in the five days he's been with us and we're working on teaching him to sit at each street corner. He loves, LOVES to go for walks and we take him on three walks/jogs per day. My husband, Mike, has also started biking with Mac to help decrease some of his anxious energy and Mac loves running alongside his dad! Mac is also in love with a corgie that we run into every evening and seems a little hurt that the corgie wants nothing to do with him...but he takes in all in stride. I'm sure he'll figure out a way to make the corgie fall in love with him! He really is a gem. Re: his separation anxiety. We've been continuing to desensitize him to our coming and leaving the apartment...we don't see any noticeable change in his behavior but it is just day five and we know it will be a long process. We are in it for the long haul and he deserves an honest chance. On a positive note, Mac isn't attached to my hip as much as before and he does venture away from me to go sniff his cat sisters. We have also started moving his bed slowly out of the bedroom...it's in the doorway now...and Mac is fine sleeping at that distance. Mac will be seeing his vet this weekend for a checkup and will be scheduled for training this weekedn as well. 8/6/10 - I was adopted today! 7/31/10 - Mac has been with us one week. He has emerged as quite the communicator. He does not bark or jump to get your attention and is very good at letting you know what he wants and does pretty well at accepting a no, if after a conversation, is the answer given. Mac is slowly learning to trust that when we leave the house, it is not forever and that he will be okay until we return. While he does love your direct attention, he is perfectly content just being in the same room and often ventures away from you to stay on top of the sounds and smells around him or engage in independent play. Whomever adopts this sweet boy is one lucky forever home! 7/26/10 - We fell in love with Mac immediately. He is a very affectionate, sweet boy who is house broken, doesn’t beg and listens well. He loves walks and does well on the leash for a youngster. Running and chasing the ball are especially fun for him and he would rather you chase him for the ball instead of bringing it back to you. Mac is a slow eater, so far does not appear to be food motivated, and although we don’t have a weight on him yet, could stand to gain a few pounds. He co-habitates well with our resident female and in his first 2 days here, will not let us out of his sight. Mac is a typical young boxer, full of energy, inquisitive and eager to learn. He is UTD on shots and ready for your time, attention and love…he is saving special hugs and kisses just for you! 7/24/10 - Mac arrived to his foster home safe on this stormy day! He is a BEAUTIFUL brindle boy with handsome black/carmel coloring. He has been giving hugs and kisses freely in his short time here and is understandably excitable at the moment. Pictures, box top and more on this handsome boy coming soon. |
