| UPDATE 4/12/10 - Jack is doing great. We totally love him and can't believe it has only been 3 months since he has been with us-it seems much longer. He is still a bit shy at times with new people and situations. At other times he is fine. We took him to a family gathering last weekend where there were a number of people and one little dog and he was great-warmed right up to everyone and left the dog alone who wanted nothing to do with him. When someone new comes to our house, he can be more shy and puts on his cowardly lion act (barking and shaking). He is halfway through dog obedience class and is doing well in it. He has learned to walk better on his leash (although he wasn't bad before), he has learned "leave it" which we use a lot and we are working up towards "come". A couple of naughty things he does includes waking us up at anywhere from 5:30-6:30 am because he wants his breakfast. He has his bed in our room. I put him out of the bedroom in the morning when he does that whi ch he doesn't like, but he seems to get the message. Also he has gotten into a bottom kitchen cupboard a couple of times. One time my husband left the cupboard open and the second time, he swears he didn't. Both times he ate his "good treats" and dry rice (he didn't touch boxes of cereal or anything else). Now we are putting an elastic band around the knobs. We will have to get childproof latches. All for now. UPDATE 3/12/10 - Jack is doing great- we love him and feel like he has been with us much longer than 2 months. His confidence is much better and he is a lot more relaxed-maybe he feels like he has finally found his home and he is getting a lot of love. He is still nervous around new people, but if they ignore him- he will go and sniff them. He starts obedience class in a week and half so that should help him. He is overall a good boy. The only thing he won't do is come right to us if is outside. We trying to work with that with treats. Health wise he seems very healthy and doesn't have the sensitive stomach that our former boxer had. We did notice worms went we took him out and it turns out he had two kinds of worms- he has finished one medicine and will start the second one this weekend. Jack went on his first hike a couple of weeks ago-there were a number of people on the hike and 1 dog. He was nervous when we got to the parking lot, but once he got out of the car he was great a nd loved it. UPDATE 2/7/10 - Jack is doing very well. He went to the Vet's this past week and checked out as very healthy. The vet provided good advice on the need to be firm as Jack is trying to figure out his social position and how to deal with his shyness around new people (basically tell new people to not pay attention to him and let him come to them). Also we should not reinforce his shyness by telling him it's ok. Once he knows what you want him to do, he minds well. He sits for his dinner and waits for us to go out the door first. Some other things he is not so good at like getting off the furniture when we want him to move so we can sit down. He is getting better at learning what his boundaries are. He is a really sweet guy overall and can't get enough love and affection. He is the best car rider and lays down after a short while. He loves his walks and doesn't seem to mind the cold much. UPDATE 1/15/10 - Jack has settled in to his new home. He is a really sweet guy and can't get enough attention and love. For the first couple of days, he followed us around the house, but is now relaxed and doesn't have to do that all the time. He loves to ride in the car and go on his walks-whenever we are getting ready to go somewhere, he thinks he is going. Over the week, we slowly got him use to being home alone and he has done fine. He has not been in a crate at all and except for eating a package of english muffins which he got off the top of the microwave, he has not done anything wrong. The foster mom said he wasn't a chowhound and wouldn't always eat, but we haven't found that to the case. He is not real food motivated, but he gobbles his meals up. I think it might be finding out what treats he really likes (so far peanut butter is real yummy). I gave him a piece of banana and he ate it slowly, but he had a funny look on his face like he had never experienced anything like that and with that texture. He is a shy guy around people. He has only seen a couple of new people and didn't get close to either. He met one of the neighborhood dogs and was fine. He gets excited when he sees other dogs and wants to play. From what I understand about his background, I think his main issue is lack of experience and exposure to different people and things in the world. We will continue to work on that slowly and build his confidence. 1/10/10 - I was adopted today! 12/26/09 - Hi, Jack here! I'm back at my fm's house. My adoption didn't work out, too many small children at the daycare run from the house. My adopted family was sad for me to leave, and I'm sure they miss me. I've fit right back in at my FM's house, my foster boxer Comet remembered me, too! We run, play, jump and sleep together. I've learned more manners, I sit for my dinner and listen to my FM (mostly). I wait for my turn to come in the house and I love chasing squirrels from the birdfeeder. I haven't had any accidents in the house since I've been here, since I sit by the door when I have to go out. I'm glad to be here, with lots of cuddles and lovin', but I'm eagerly awaiting my forever home. Once you meet me, you'll love me! 12/5/09 - I was adopted! 11/14/09 - Well, it's been a week and I am not the same dog I was when I got here. My foster Mom and Dad have been very patient while I learn the rules here. My foster buddy, Comet, knows the rules and I try to follow him. I've learned to "sit" for my dinner, and I lay down sometimes. I get to run around in the backyard, and I got to go to the dog park, which was the best thing I've ever done. I ran until I was pooped, then I slept ALOT. I'm eating more here, hoping to get bigger and stronger. I walk pretty good on the leash, but need reminding sometimes when I see something interesting. My FM lets me sleep on the couch, usually with my head on her lap. I finally felt happy enough to let them see my boxer wiggle, which made her laugh and give me a snack. I like the snacks. I've had someone call to take me to my forever home with them, but we don't have a date yet. I want my forever home, but I'll keep my FM company until they meet me. 11/9/09 - Our first meeting, Jack was so shy he backed away from his new fosters and hid behind his transport buddies. The ride to his new foster home was pretty uneventful, he lay in the dog bed looking pitiful. Getting through the front door was another challenge not easily overcome, until he saw the other boxer in the back yard. In the house, over to the back door, then out into the leaves running with my boxer Comet. Jack is skittish, and seems unsure of what to do. He's been with his sister, Jill, who seems to be the natural leader of the group. Jack is feeling his way around, not much in the way of manners or obedience training, but we will work on that. He learned to sit yesterday, even though he's a little velcro dog and usually sits on my foot. I'll take what I can get. The first night in the crate was rough..lotsa barking and pulling the blanket that was covering the crate through the bars. Some furniture moving and re-arranging to put the crate in the bedroom made everyone happy and quiet. Jack did have a couple of "accidents." It's my opinion that 3 months of living in a run allowed him to forget he has to go outside to pee. We're putting him out every couple of hours until he gets the hang of going out, or letting me know he has to go out. Went on a walk yesterday, and he did very good. Stopped pulling after almost 2 blocks, just needed some small reminders through the rest of the walk. Just trying to figure out where he belongs in the pack of 2 boxers and 2 people. I'm trying to help him realize, that he's the last, but certainly not least. He just needs a little time and confidence. Did I mention he picked up on sit in only one day? |
