| UPDATE 9/3/10 - Hank is doing great in his new home. We bonded right away and he enjoyed the first weekend hanging out by the lake. He got to meet a little Yorki and they played great together all day Saturday. He has gotten more used to the leash and doesn't pull on walks anymore. He is making progress with sit, down and stay. He learns so quickly. He is a bundle of energy. He typically doesn't stop moving until 11 at night. He has made him self at home after the weekend at the lake house and has gotten use to our apartment. He does love to chase the cat so we're working on that. He went to a friends place and met a yellow lab yesterday and they were best friends for a couple hours. They chased and ran and stole toys and dug holes. All afternoon wrestling without a problem. That was the first time I saw him look tired. It only lasted a few minutes and he was up and rolling again. We went to the vet today and I think he isn't a fan. He was in great health and did a good job . We have loved having Hank come into our family and he's fitting in like he was always here. We're about to leave for a camping trip with some other couples and their dogs so I think it will be a fun weekend for him. We lucked out with Hank! 8/27/10 - I was adopted today! 8/17/10 - Hank has had a busy couple of weeks. He came to Maine so he could see a specialist who does cardiac ultrasounds to diagnose a problem he appeared to be having at the shelter. They said he was collapsing during play. The vet said that he can hear a murmmur on both sides, but that there's nothing really wrong with his heart right now. He said that another ultrasound will have to be done in time to see if there is any change. That will let his family know if Hank will develop Boxer Cardio Myopathy in his future. We also ran into another problem in all this. Seems I let Hank play a little too hard with a buddy and the symptoms of Cauda Equina appeared. What that means is that Hank basically has a wobbly joint between his last vertebrae and his tail bone. Like some people have a "trick" or "weak" ankle, his butt gets "sprained" with too much rough and tumble play. Because that spinal joint is a little wobbly, the nerve for his back legs can get pinched and inflamed with heavy play. That's why he was moping around here like he was an old man or, alternately, jumping around like he'd been stung by a bee. So Hank spent my vacation week at the vet's office having forced rest and only about 1 day of anti-inflamatory meds. Dr. Matt said he was good to go after the first couple days, but he stayed the whole week to make sure. Now he's home and back to his little ole self.... ARGHHHH!!! He was one stir crazy Boxer Boy!! He's played with every toy in the house, made up a couple more, run around the back yard, been forced to rest by a mean mommy, and done a little boxing with my lab. As I write this, he's "helping" by trying to walk on my laptop and licking my face. When I turned my head to nudge him away, he played tug of war with my hair tie. Unfortunately, it was STILL IN MY HAIR! He is just fascinated by hair and hair ties. He's too funny to get upset with. Ahhhhhhhh, he's sleeping... everyone stay quiet...shhhhh. If you're the kind of person who works all day, needs to crate their dog, and wants to walk and play with him when you get home... All those rescues telling you you're not home often enough for an energetic boxer??? FINALLY! Here's your guy!!! He's got all the energy of a Boxer Baby Boy, but that time in a crate is just what he needs to rest between bouts of it!! Hank's just too cool to pass up, come and get him! 8/4/10 - Hi everyone! My name is Hank! Let me tell you about a day in my life! I live in this little house with this nice lady and these two other dogs who can get grumpy sometimes. But hey, its better than all the other places I've been living for most my life, so I'll stick it out. Besides, this lady has the yummiest treats! Anyway... the lady calls me her ADHD dog, so I guess you can tell why, huh? My day... First, I get up in the morning and the lady just seems to know to open the back door and we all run outside! Then she goes back to bed grumbling a word I don't know but it sounds like "rrrrrrrrrrleeee". Sometimes, I go back and snuggle in with her and sometimes the black dog and I stay out in the back yard playing and racing and wrestling. We both love my favorite game- "NO, I want YOUR toy!!!" and we play keep-away with our toys. He is a sore looser and ends up keeping the toy... so I bark at him. Then the lady feeds us. She puts my food in my crate and when I see her pick up my silver bowl, I run right for the crate. I look at her until she says "ok, go inside" and then I run in, turn around and wait for her to put the bowl down. When I'm done eating, I whimper a little to let her know I'm full, but if she doesn't come let me out right away, I just lay there and wait for her. Its soft and comfy, so I dn't mind. I can have my "me" time. With a full belly, its nap time. I'm still kinda a puppy, you know... If I'm not ready to sleep yet, I will go get a toy and see if the black dog wants to play keep away some more, but usually he's out laying in the sun. Lemme tell you, folks... I've learned that's is AWESOME to lay out in the sun!!! There is a nice little deck out back and its super nice to snooze there. Its where all the toys are anyway, so I can snooze, play, snooze, play, snooze, play!!! What more could a puppy want?!?!? Oh! I forgot to tell you! I love when the lady goes and takes a shower. See, I love water. So when she makes the water fall on her, I stick my head in and try to lick it up!! Wicked fun! (She also tries to use a squirt bottle when she wants me to stop doing something, but I love water so much, I just lick the water out of the air when she's squirting!!! What a great toy!! Backfired on her, huh??) When the lady eats lunch, I try to get her to share and I get up on the couch and try to walk over her lap to get at her food. She says words like "down!" and "URGH!" and calls me names like "chucklehead" and "foozeball" and eventually pushes me off, but not before I try to get a few licks in. Today, I got her good! She started squealing and said something like "you turkey! You licked my EYEBALL!" Teach her to keep food from ME! I've also found out how comfy the couch is. Sometimes, I sleep the whole night out there... that is, of course, after I've jumped on the lady's bed and stepped on her head and made her make that squealy noise!. Oh wait... I'm off topic again. Where was I? Lunch! Of course, after a nap, its back to playing outside with the black dog and sometimes the really grumpy old dog. He always wants to stop our playing and I don't think that's fair, so I bark at him, too. So all afternoon, we play and play and play. There is a little pool out back and I love to swim, so I jump in and cool off. I also learned, I can swim!! I went to a pond the other day!!! Oops, the lady told me this is too long, so I'll go for now. I'll tell you more some other day. If I remember. 7/26/10 - I was told Hank's story today. He's from Georgia! He was brought up to a NJ Pet Expo by a kinda shady operation who said, 'if they don't get adopted, I'm not taking them back'. He was taken home by a lady with a condo who gated him into her kitchen. Well, you can imagine how well that worked with a "tween" boxer... Evidently, the resident cats helped him stage a break out and he had his way with the rest of the apartment. Thus, he ended up back at a shelter within two weeks. He spent some time with them, then a week with a SCBR foster in NJ until we could work out transport for him to come to Maine. Talk about a crazy life!! Poor little man! Can you imagine what it will mean to him when he finds a family who will keep him for all time?!?!?!?! As I type, he's asleep, snoring, with his head on my leg and sprawled on the rest of the couch. I'd be exhausted too!! 7/25/10 - Hank has finally arrived at his permanent foster home. It was a long trip for him from shelter to temporary home in NJ to foster home in ME. He is a gorgeous fawn boy who is on the thin side. He scored top scores on his evaluation at the shelter in terms of being even tempered. He is a very friendly, happy boy and wants to just have fun all day. At the same time, he really likes his people. When he fell asleep (finally!) this afternoon, he did so with his paws touching me. At most points of today, he had some contact with me. He was an owner surrender to the shelter because the owner "couldn't take care of him". He is 18 months old, and a better example of a teenage boxer I've never met. He wants to play play play and when that's done, his other speed is FLOP! He loves the little pool out back and is so funny. He lays down in it and shoves his head underwater, blowing bubbles out his nose. I can tell already that we're going to start working on "down" since he already thinks that investigating the house includes the counter tops. But, he knows what that word means and listens when you tell him. If you and your family are looking for an active boy to grow up with you, Hank's your man! Check him out! |
