| 3/13/10 - Hey everyone, it’s me, Emmitt! It is really rainy and windy here in
Brooklyn today, but that’s OK with me. I went to the park this morning with my friend Maddie and we played in the puddles and wrestled and romped. We got pretty muddy but it was worth it. When I got home I got a good rub down with a towel and then I had my breakfast. For breakfast dessert (that’s right I said breakfast dessert) I got a little bite of peanut butter with a teeny-tiny blue pill in it. The pill doesn’t really taste like anything, but that peanut butter – man it is gooooooood. My foster mom said I needed to take that little pill because I have hypothyroidism (http://autoimmunedisease.suite101.com/article.cfm/canine_hypothyroidism ). Seems like an awfully big word to me, but she says I don’t need to worry my handsome head over it because it is easily treated with daily doses of synthetic thyroxine (more big words, sheesh). All I know is if having hypo-thing-a-ma-jig means I get to have peanut butter dessert twice a day, I like it! 3/11/10 - Emmitt isn't inclined to get on the furniture. While we don't mind if the dogs relax on the couch we haven't encouraged it since he may be adopted by a family that has a "no dogs on furniture rule." However today I wasn't feeling so great so I stayed home from work. Late in the morning I was having a snooze on the couch when I felt the "clump" of a dog jumping up. I just assumed it was our dog coming to lay at my feet so I didn't think much of it. Then four legs started walking up to my head and it was Emmitt, who snuggled into the smallest spot between the back cushions and my body. He sniffed me and nudged me to make sure I was OK and then he settled down for a little "get better foster mom snuggle." Shawn grabbed the camera and snapped a few pictures. Emmitt stayed with me for about 5 minutes and then he seemed to think I was fine, so off he went to rest on the floor underneath me. I love this boy. 3/8/10 - Emmitt has been bunking with us a week now and what a fun and lovable addition to our house is he! He is doing great after his neuter (especially since we stopped making him wear that dumb cone) and for the most part he has left his stitches alone. Just to be on the safe side, when we are not home he wears a neck brace to help keep the licking at bay. One night I woke up to go to the bathroom and I poked my head into the living room to check on the dogs. Emmitt was asleep on the floor with his face smushed on the open pages of a book (slightly covered in drool). Evidently my husband had tossed the book in the chair and I guess it slipped to the floor and splayed itself open. It looked like Emmitt was having trouble sleeping, so he thought he would read for a while and fell asleep reading. I wish I had taken a picture; it was so cute! He is full of young pup mischief, but one look at you with his big ole dopey face and you just melt. He is strong and uses this to his advantage when we see other dogs out on a walk. He isn’t aggressive towards them, but he feels he MUST see them, NOW. This is not OK behavior in our house, so we are working very hard to try and curb him of this and it will take a strong leader to help continue to work on his leash manners. Tonight a friend came over who isn’t a “dog person” (yep we are friends with him anyway) and, as usual, the dogs always want to play with, drool on, and sit right next to (or on) the person in the room that isn’t a “dog person.” But Emmitt, being the charmer he is, turned this guy to putty and they were cuddled up together by the end of the night. Maybe you want him to cuddle up with you?! 3/2/10 - Emmitt was picked up as a stray in New Jersey and was happily rescued by Joel and Nancy (thanks!) in the middle of a snow storm. He spent a couple of R&R days at their house and came home with us on Sunday afternoon. It seems he probably knows a few basic commands (sit, down, paw - the all important "NO!") but everything is just a wee bit too new and exciting for him to want to listen. He takes treats from us ever so gently and has no food / treat aggression (yeah!) He protests a bit about going into the kennel, but once he is in there he settles down quickly and quietly. He is so excited and full of licks, wiggles and kidney beans. When you pet him he just leans into you and if you sit down on the floor with him he tries to bury his head in your lap. He is really a big ole mushy, smushy goof- ball. Today he spent the morning at the Vet's office being brought up to date on all his shots and getting neutered. The vet's office is on the block behind us - it took exactly 2 minutes to walk him there and about 25 minutes to get him home, (part of this time he being carried!) Poor drunken, cone-wearing boy! He is in great health and is a strong, lovable young pup; as soon as he heals up he will be ready to go home! |
