| UPDATE 12/6/10 - Duke is doing great. He adjusted about 5 minutes after entering the house and he got to smell around. We gave him a bath and brushed his teeth the first night.
I have 3 boys. Two of them younger and full of energy that he loves to chase around the house. He didn't eat much the first day but he got over that quickly. He and Kera (my 4 yr old boxer) are unseperatable. They sleep close together with my 6 year old son and will not go outside without the other. We go for walks everyday even through the 3+ft of snow and he loves it. 11/28/10 - Duke has been adopted! 11/23/10 - Duke is a great boy to foster. We enjoy having him here and watching him continue to change, little bits at a time. He has taken the cue from our female how to relax a bit more and in turn he makes sure she gets a good dose of exercise. He now lets us touch his ears and pet his head without shying away. After 2 months you'd think some things would come quicker, but every dog is different and it seems the more trust you build with them, the more they let you in. Routine contributes a lot to this. They appear to grow into a comfort level when they know what's what. Duke is so easy going about having his feet cleaned when coming in on a wet muddy day. He has come to expect it and waits patiently without pulling his foot or running off. He has the most expressive eyes, which are always fixated on you when you engage him. Often he will join your conversation with him, he has a sweet voice that is just as expressive as his eyes! He does love his humans and will play rough if you let him..he is a bit of a play biter..but careful not to get too crazy with it, and sometimes does need reminding. Still, he listens well and is eager to please. We just can't get over how he melts like butter when he is sleepy. You'd never think he has an energetic bone in his body, once he settles in for the night, he is a great sleeper (and to be honest, snores...a little!). What fun it would be for him to find a forever home with another dog he can run and play with and maybe even a skin sibling that needs a best friend. This boy is loyal, loving and ready to be your companion! 11/13/10 - Click here for my NEW VIDEO! 10/25/10 - Hi everyone, Duke here! Thanks for visiting MY page. I've been pretty busy getting used to things around here, so Foster Mom(FM) has had to fill you in on me till now. Since my video was posted, I've gained 4 pounds! I get my own placemat and when FM takes it out and puts in my special spot, I know its time to eat! She's pretty impressed with me by the way, because even though I am an energetic teenager, I do not counter surf, or jump or grab food out of your hand. I am very gentle, sit with just a look from FM and pick up every morsel I may spit out of my bowl when eating after wards...its my little way of helping to clean up! I am really starting to love toys. Foster Dad(FD) laughs at me, because I have been taking every toy out of the box, sometimes two at a time..what can I say, I like variety! I have my very own bed and I sleep in FM and FD's room with my foster sister. Sometimes I sleep on my bed and sometimes on theirs. I am a BIG fan of cuddling and love to keep everyone warm. When I'm not eating, playing inside with toys or sleeping, I love love love to be outside, go for walks, and run..ooh how I love to run! So, there's a little about me...what about you? If you have room in your heart, your life and your home for me, please call my FM, as much as everyone here loves sweet irresistible me, I really want to start the rest of my life with my very own forever family. 10/10/10 - Duke has been with us almost 3 weeks. As he becomes more trusting of his surroundings, more of his personality emerges. What we are seeing lately is Duke the wild man! This teenager loves to play and has boat loads of energy! He runs circles around his senior foster sister and has taken to jumping over her like she is some kind of obstacle course, lol! We have never seen such a bouncy boy, I have been calling him our bucking boxer. Walks for Duke are all about 3 things...the sniff, the pee and the poop! He literally has his nose to the ground 95% of the time. It takes us over an hour to walk 2 miles so it is a good thing this isn't his only form of exercise. We still feel he would do best in a home where he can play with a younger dog and have plenty of run and play time! He has also started trying to establish dominance with everyone in the house, he is subtle about it which makes us laugh, but he does this heavy lean thing and has taken to smacking his back side into his foster sister, since she doesn't allow him to try dominating her in other ways. Still, he responds well when corrected, just needs constant reminding! Ahh yes, and for as crazy as he can be, he settles down and sleeps just as hard as he plays, preferably as close to you as you will let him. This is a special boy who deserves a loving and patient forever home that has time for him. 9/29/10 - Duke is adjusting well to foster care. He is friendly but cautious when you first meet him and doesn't take long to wiggle his nub, give kisses and want to be your trusty companion. He is a bit head shy, we aren't sure yet if its because he has some crusty spots on the edge of his ears, but we gently approach when we are going to pet him hoping with time the hesitation will lessen. Duke loves his daily walks, running and playing in the yard and although he's not big on toys at this point, he does enjoy a nice game of tug-a-war with his foster sister, with whom he gets along well. You can tell by watching them play that he would really enjoy the company of a younger dog that can keep up with his energy level! He is very strong, but not unmanageable on the leash and we are working with him on the leash thing and some other basic training. He is such a sweet boy and has won our hearts in just a few short days! He is recovering from his neuter and is ready for his forever home, but don't wait, because this handsome guy won't be here long. Watch his video! 9/25/10 - Duke comes to us from an owner who had to downscale and move into an apartment. Duke was also spending a lot of time alone, in a crate, during the day. Although he didn't live with any, the owner reports that he's good with other dogs and older kids. Not so much for the cats he lived with. So far he has taken Foster Mom for a walk (and didn't miss an opportunity to pee on everything along the way), sniffed and marked every inch of the yard and taken his time to explore the whole house...except the basement..he is not interested in going down there just yet. He is very inquisitive and is now anxiously awaiting a proper meet and greet with the resident female. So far the gate sniffs have gone well, but we will be taking it slow and waiting a bit for a real introduction. More on this handsome boy as we get to know him. |
