UPDATE 9/5/10  - Cooper is, in a word, fantastic! He is so good and sweet and loving. He's feeling and looking better and better every day. His girls at the vet love having him as their last appointment because he's so sweet and it's nice the end their day with him! Have I mentioned that we have the best vet? She and the girls in the office go all out for us.
We'll be signing up for another class with our obedience trainer. We're planning to go to Canine Good Citizen class when she starts her next one.
The temperatures are changing pretty quickly here now. The heat waves are pretty much over and winter is just around the corner. We're hoping Cooper has more of his fur back in time for the winter but we're coat shopping just in case. Of course it has to be a cool coat, not a pretty little pink one like Pixi!
Here's the best news (to me anyway)...we were out playing in the yard the other day. We were throwing the  ball and frisbee. Coop was running around when I noticed he looked a little different. It took me a minute to realize what I was seeing. His head was held high, he had a sparkle in his eye, and he had that proud bounce in his step. You know the one. It says 'oh yeah, this is my home and my yard and life is good!' What a sight! He knows he's home!!
Toodles for now!

UPDATE 7/30/10 -  Hello again everyone! I can't believe I've been here long enough to write another update. Let me tell you about some of my new neighbors. There are cows out back, goats, donkeys and alpacas down a few doors, and chickens across the street. Of course we have dogs, cats and bunnies around as well. What a great neighborhood! We have lots of human friends too, come to find out. Soon as someone hears I live here they come by to meet me. Naturally everyone comments on how nice I am! One of the girls even made me a new bed...boy is it comfy!
I've been going to obedience training for a few weeks. There are a bunch of us in the class and most of us get along well. I'm learning a lot. I'm going to pass with flying colors!
I've also figured out I like to go for rides. Soon as my family asks me if I want to go I'm at that door waiting! Who knew it could be so much fun?!
Let's see, what else have I done? I met my new vet. I really like her and the other ladies. They just fawned over me. I'm feeling better and better all the time. I'm looking better and better all the time, too, if I may say so myself!
Soon as my mother figures out how to put some pictures up you'll see for yourself how happy I am at home!

UPDATE 7/2/10 - Hi everyone, Cooper here!
Just wanted to let you all know how it's going. Well, in a word it's outstanding! I'm settling into my forever home very nicely thank-you-very-much! My ride home was long, but i slept through most of it. My parents tell me all the time how much they love me and how good I am. And they think I'm handsome! I have a whole bunch of rooms to roam through and I think I've explored every square inch! I even have my own table for my bowls. And don't get me started on my toys...indoor toys and outdoor toys!
My new roommate is a blue & gold macaw named Cawley. She's kind of strange...she's always talking and asking me where my ball is, then she tells me to get the ball but she never throws it back. Go figure! My new grandmother has a dog, too. Her name is Pixi. She's tiny but she's cool. We share the yard. Speaking of which, do you have any idea how big my new yard is? We walk and walk and I haven't seen the whole thing yet! Mom says we're going to walk down to the brook this weekend because it's supposed to be really hot here.
I guess I'll be going to obedience training soon. We're just waiting for a call back to confirm. That's ok. I'll ace it. I'm a good boy!
Well, it's time to go out before I go to bed. I'll let you know more as it happens!

6/20/10 - I was adopted today!

6/1/10 -
Hi everyone. Coop here. It has been just over 3 weeks since Penny & Greg came to get me from Long Island.  They saved me.  I love them. Dr. Sam has taken very good care of me.  I still have stiches from my last "procedure".  Mom says all men should have it done.  Dad made her sleep on the couch that night. I have 2 brothers. Kaiser and Goober.  Goober and I are best friends and Kaiser is the bossy one who makes Goober and I stop playing when things begin to fall down and break. Mom and Dad took us all to the Bark Park on Sunday. We had soooo much fun. There were so many other friends there, I couldn't decide who to play with first.  My hair is beginning to grow back. My ears are doing great. They will never be perfect, but I let dad give me a bath and clean them out. It didn't hurt. I've learned to eat dry dog food. Mom is so proud of me.  I do have some bad habits though. I like to chase and annoy the cats that live here. I love it. They don't. They won't come in the house anymore. hehehehehe.   OH, and mom says I have the biggest tongue she has ever seen on a dog.
Mom has attached a picture of me. She took it this morning. I swear, I was minding my own  >>> business, sleeping on the floor, and Kaiser decided to play jokes on me.

5/24/10 -
Coop was neutered on Friday.  He is doing fabulously.  He has started playing with one of my dogs. I believe he looks at Kaiser as the Alpha and therefore won't play with him. Kaiser has to take control and keep he and Goober under control.  Coop likes to chase and annoy the cats, so I don't recommend anyone with cats adopt him.  Dr. Sam said the swelling in his ears has gone down a tremendous amount and he allows us to pet his head and gently rub his ears.  He said they look great on the inside. Training is no going so well though. He doesn't care about "treats" to him they are not a reward. We can't get him to sit on command yet.

5/14/10 -
You would not believe that the dog I'm about to talk about is the same dog I brought home 1 week ago. I can't tell you what an amazing turnaround he has done.  He eats.  EATS!  He even is eating dry food mixed with canned.  He runs, he plays he chews his rawhide.  HE LOVES my daughter. Has to sit next to or on her.  When Greg comes home he is a wiggling crying mess.  This morning for the first time, he ran into the living room, jumped up on the sofa, put his paws on my shoulders and started licking me and huggin me and wiggling his stumpy tail.  Even Greg was amazed at this.  Coop was not a woman's dog
Today he jumped up on the bed and said ME! ME!! LOOK AT ME!! Getting him to take his pills is a chore, but we get them down and he gets better.  I used to look at Coop and cry at the sickness, the pain, and the injustice of it all.  Now I cry when I look at Coop because he is amazing and resilient.  He KNOWS he is loved and being taken care of.
It will take a long time for his hair to grow back and become a normal coat.  The warts on him may never go away.  His ears are not hurting him as much on the inside, but the swelling is not going down and the vet said if we didn't see improvement within a week, it is probably not going to get better.  He still favors his rear leg, but he likes to take walks.
Greg and I are so happy.  My daughter Mariah has been telling all her teachers and friends about rescuing Coop.  Her Graphic Arts teacher, Mariah and some other students have put together a fund raiser for Coop to help SCBR with his expenses.
This is the best job I've ever had. This outranks any paying job I've ever had or could ever have.

5/12/10 -
Cooper came to us from a family who had suffered such a reversal of fortune that they didn't have the means to feed him, let alone get him to the vet for the care he desperately needs. He is obviously malnourished and his toe nails were ignored to the point that they had curled back into the pads of his paws. He feet are about three times the size they should be and walking must have been a misery for him.
We went to All Pets Vet the other day. Dr. Sam met with Greg and Coop. Dr. Sam kept Coop for the entire afternoon.  We picked him up at 7pm. Here is what Dr. Sam had to say:  Coop has an infection that is ravaging his body. It is the source of all his issues.  He is also infested with Ear Mites that have caused so much damage to his ears that it may be permanent. He is on a host of medicines to help him.  His nails needed to be surgically cut or removed. He has fungal infection in his pads.  His heart is in good shape.  His ears will be the concern over the next several months.  The ears are infected, inflamed, and calcified.  Dr. Sam is hoping the meds Coop is on will reduce the swelling. If it does not, then the damage is permanant and can only be corrected with surgery.
When we picked him up he came out of the "back" a happier, less-in-pain puppy. He was soooo excited to see us.  He wagged his tail and walked normally for the first time in years.  His limp and lameness has been reduced and will go away when the anitbiotics fully kick in. His skin condition and the pustuals will go away with the antibiotics.  The lumps on his butt and the loss of hair is from poor nutrition and "bed sores" are from not being able to walk and having to lay down all the time.  In time his hair will grow back and his coat will improve.
Since we have been home, he walks around, cuddles up with Greg, and even socializes with our other dogs. He will be well enough for neutering in about 2 weeks.
