| 6/3/10 - Most folks don't realize that, on these pages, the dog's story starts at the bottom and works up. So I'll try to summarize my man Casper so you want to read from the bottom up. Casper is, UNDENIABLY, one of the best fosters and dogs I've ever met. He has more character in his left foot than all of the other fosters I've had, combined! He's been here, wow, five months and he still teaches me something about himself every day! He's so very smart. He's figured out how the house runs, what's acceptable and not. He's even learned to sit and wait for me to release him to his food bowl, even though supper is cause for hopping and spinning in circles! He's settled into his relationships with the others in the pack so well they can all sleep together on the bed in a pile. He's also learned how to open the back door to come back in and the latch for the back gate to go walkabout. (THAT was a fun day, we're thinking it was dumb luck.) All he wants is to be with his people. He adores my 8 year-old niece and loves men. He is probably the most mellow 20 month old boxer I've ever met. He'll wrestle with my lab of the same age, but then he's good to spend the rest of the day on the couch. But, if his people are around, the other dogs don't exist. Well, they exist to the point that he'll try to keep them away and the people all to himself. He is one of the only dogs I'll trust to leave loose when I leave the house. He doesn't get into ANY trouble. He's just snoozing on the couch when I get home and at the door waiting for me. He doesn't even try to investigate the counter. Make no mistake, he's a LOT of dog and not for the faint of heart, but he responds perfectly to a "master". He's just one COOL dog who will always surprise and make you smile. 5/16/10 - Its always the web chick's foster who doesn't get updated, right? Caspy, caspy, caspy. What a guy. As those of you who read Casper's Clues know, he was kinda mopey when he got back from the family who tried to adopt him. He was doing stuff I'd never seen before, like wandering into an open crate and sleeping there. (This from the buy who tore up 2 other crates elsewhere) He was like that for a couple days until my goddaughter came over and he perked RIGHT up!! So, whatever home he goes to could have some kids around, even if they only visit, and he'd be in heaven. He completely loves them!!! I tell people he's about 90% back to his normal self and I don't miss the other 10% ONE LITTLE BIT!!!! When he came back, he stopped dominating the couch. He stopped trying to pick fights with my older, dominant, dog. I even woke up this morning and he was resting his head on the old man's bum, as they all lay in a puppy pile. Yes, he's figured out how to join us all on the bed, but will only do it in the morning, he still spends the nights on the couch in the living room. He's let me be alpha and stopped trying to challenge me to staring contests. He's give in first! I think those are GREAT strides!!!! I've had a lot of company over in the last month and he is great with everyone who comes to the house! He's really settled into being a wonderful family/house dog. He loves to play with my lab pup, who is his age and, according to my mother, one day when I was gone, he even let the "old man" in on the action! I found out today, that he's not so great out in the big, wide, world. He's scared of the dark. Kinda like his aversion to water, he'd rather not go anywhere with dim lights... even the fish department at the pet store! We went to a BRAD with Jeannie at the Pet Quarters in Portland and he was a great big HUGE CHICKEN!!! Where, at home, he's usually demanding of attention, he was shying away from it when folks wanted to meet him. That is, until some kids came along and he was all eager to meet them! But, after about an hour and a half, he'd had it and was having no more of people coming up to pet him, and it was time for us to go. Soooooooo... he won't be a dog park dog. He won't be a pet store dog. He WILL be one of the goobiest, sweetest, most devoted, most loving, home dogs that you'll ever have to be your best friend! He's got alll kinds of character and charm. There's just not enough to say about this guy! 4/26/10 - Well, Casper's new home didn't work out as well as we'd hoped. They had never had a dog before and found out that their son was allergic.... the hard way. So the big man is back with me, and the boys, a little sad right now, so we're just going to let him do his thing and settle in. 4/10/10 I got my very own home today!!! 3/27/10 - False alarm! False alarm!! I told Fostermomma that I wasn't sick and she should just relax, but noooooooo, she just HAD to worry! And it was all nothing!! My tests came back normal when they were redone. Told you! Told you!!! I think she just wants me to stay longer here. But, we had a talk about that, too, and we agreed that I need a family of my very own, as much as I love her. So, now I'm ready to go and waiting right here for you to come get me. I have been working SO HARD on my manners and now I'll sit and wait for the food to be put down, if I absolutely must. When she gets the leash out, I spin my way to the front door and sit very handsomely while she puts it on me. I've figured out that if I knock that little bell thing she has hanging on the back door knobby thing that she'll come running and open it up. I've even learned to open the door up and let myself IN (when she forgets to lock it) I am working really hard on getting along with my oldest foster brother. We've been handing out in the back yard when she's not home and we keep away from each other in the house. Meanwhile, that big chucklehead younger fosterbrother and I play 'til we drop, laying on top of each other on the couch. I've even discovered what the doof finds so fun about toys! Now we play "steal the toy" from each other. If you've seen the main SCBR page, you've seen that I've started a blog called "Casper's Clues" to help out dogs coming into rescue. I'm really clever, if I do say so myself, so why not share my smarts!?! I'm about ready to add the next installment, so stay tuned... Of course, when I get adopted, I'll have to stay in touch with fostermomma so she can keep up my words of wisdom! I kinda like fame. heh heh heh. 3/9/10 - Ok, so get this.... Fostermomma puts a leash on me and I get all excited. I wiggle. I spin. I hop. I'm so good on the leash, I can't believe myself! And where does she take me????? The VET!!! I tell ya, what a gyp!!!! She says she's concerned because I've been loosing weight, blah blah blah. I tell her its because she keeps putting Quinn and I ~O U T S I D E~ whenever she goes anywhere!!! I mean, it takes a lot outta a guy to shiver and generally look pathetic so she'll feel guilty and give us treats when she gets home!! But nooooooooooooooooo, she just HAD to take me to that place that smells funny.... dumb guy in scrubs thought I wouldn't see through that jerky thing he tried to win me over with.... I showed HIM! I didn't take it! Nyah! I got her back, too! You shoulda seen her following me around with a plastic tub in her hand trying to get me to pee so she could catch it!! If I had hands, I'd slap my knee laughing right now!!!! So then we leave and she takes me to this magical kingdom! There's this building with a window.... and people IN the window, actually HAND you FOOD!!!!! ohmydogohmydogohmydog! I got this thing called a burgrrrrrrrrrrr. It almost made me forgive her for the other torture! Then when I got home, all my buddies (and my fav-o-rite human ever) were waiting there and they were allllll jealous when I breathed on them! I heard fostermomma say that the test results were off. I'm a dog.... its pee.... its all "off" as far as I'm concerned. I'd tell her its nuthin', but I may get another trip to the magic building outta it, so I think I'll shut up for now! See-yuh! The C-man 3/8/10 - Oh my, how time flies! We've had so much fun with Casper at the house. His favorite person still continues to be my 7 year-old niece and he's just in heaven when she comes over! That picture of him staring out the door is him watching her walk back home. He's even won over her mother, who is the least likely dog person. The other day, she came into the house and he was all wiggles and bounces to greet her. I tried to get him outside so we could leave, and he just turned and sat on her foot as if saying "I like this one, can I keep her?"... turkey. He's such a goofball, he makes me laugh every day. He's plenty happy that the weather has warmed up. He was getting pretty creative in his ways to avoid going outside in the cold and rain. Sometimes, I just had to laugh. I doubt he intended it, but during the really heavy rain, he would just let it fly in the back deck and it was almost like he was trying to aim between the boards! Then, all he'd have to do is take two steps to be back inside...turkey! We've settled down to a routine in the house. No more territorial fights. The "boys" sucessfully keep themselves separated and there have been no other problems. Meanwhile, the warm weather means the dreaded M U D S E A S O N. Caspy and Quinn have been very diligent in bringing all of the dirt from the yard inside for us all to enjoy... turkeys. He went on a field trip a couple weeks ago and met all kinds of people.... at a strange place...in the dark... and everyone fell in love with him. He did great! What a "test" passed. He's really a "people" dog. He just loves all kinds of people! Had I not crashed my car this weekend, he would have been at the RI Pet Expo this weekend, having scores of people fall in love with him! Instead, he's stretched out the length of the couch, snoring to beat the band.... turkey. 2/8/10 - Oh my. I had written all these updates and then the site crashed, they were lost, and I don't remember what a I wrote. Sooooo, let me say it all from scratch. Casper is one super dog! The poor guy walked around here his first week so full of hormones from his neuter, he didn't know if he was coming or going (ok, pun intended). He got along immediately with my lab, who is his same age. They play and wrestle, especially in the mornings and whenever anyone comes over to show off to. Casper reportedly had a problem when someone knocked on the door or rang the bell, butI've only seen him bark like any other dog and then let whomever in the house to be greeted with wiggles and bouncing. This guy is the wiggliest foster I've had to date! He's big, but he can make himself so SMALL when he kidney beans, he is just one big circular wiggle that gets going so fast, he ends up spinning in circles. He's really not as big as his weight says he is. THEN, you get a flashlight out and its GAME ON!!! My 7 year-old niece had him spinning in circles and doing back springs off the couch to chase this thing. Look over here for the videos >>> (Sorry you have to tilt your head to watch the 2nd... I was holding my flatscreen with one hand and the camera with the other) Casper is a couch potato. He's completely trust worthy to be left home alone. He doesn't counter surf. He has NO food or treat aggression. HE DOESN'T JUMP! He doesn't shred things. He doesn't even really play with toys! He's completely a people dog. I don't think he'd really care if there were other dogs around so long as he had a human to cuddle! He's a big snuggler! I was wrong when I first said he'd play all day if he could. If there's a person around, other dogs and playing don't matter at all! He can't get up on my bed, so he'll come in the bedroom and put his front paws and chest up and snuggle his nose in behind my knees or chest and then try to sleep there. He will actually do it, until his hind end gives out and then he gives a little huff, like saying "aw nuts!", and goes back to the living room couch. Then in the morning, I'll hear "click click click" and I know to brace myself... he'll put his face into mine and slurp me awake to let me know its time to go O U T! He loves loves loves men. My neighbor has been working on my house and he is completely Casper's favorite person. The other day, we were on the front porch for a trial and he saw my neighbor in the yard... ZOOM... the C-man ran over to play with his best friend. I had to leave for a ewekend and my neighbor was was watching him. Sometime during the weekend, Casper learned how to open the back door and let himself in from the pen out back... which is how I know he's so great when left alone in the house! Smart cookie! He's having a problem with my older dog, though. I've had to break up a couple fights. Its completely a dominance thing... and I think Casper is a little territorial about me. They've worked it out that they stay separate, but it was a little rough there. Casper would win the battle, but lose the war0 meaning he ended up with more battle scars, so he was looking a little worse for wear. The thing is, he'd be a great dog for a house OR an apartment, even as big as he is, because he does so well on his own and has ZERO bad habits. He'd be a great dog to be your truck buddy going to job sites. His second favorite person is my niece (so basically, I'm just here to provide food for him)- and the stuff she does to him (oy!)- so even with a family. If someone is looking to adopt him and they already have a dog, they must KNOW that their dog is submissive- not just laid back- but submissive. His dominance isn't something that can just be controlled by a strong owner. He's here next to me on the couch, snoring like a trooper! His cheeks actually suck in and blow out. Just one more thing about this guy that makes you laugh! He's had it rough so far in his young life. He looks at me and I can just tell he's asking "when is someone going to love me always?" He sure does deserve it! 1/10/10 - Well, the big guy has arrived. He's a big, muscular, boy who would play alllll them time with my lab puppy if he could. He's had a tough couple of days. He was neutered a couple days ago, so he's recovering from that. He's also still recovering from wounds he received from when he was attacked by a couple dogs at the shelter before we got him last month. But, still, he likes to lean and be scritched. He smiles all the time. He's got to have ear drops for yeast infections in his ears, but he took them pretty well tonight, as well as his anti-biotics. He's finally sacked out on the dog bed in the corner, snoring to beat the band. I'll update him again soon as those hormones left over in his system go away and I get to know the real Casper. 1/7/2010 - Unfortunately, we found out the hard way that Casper-man is NOT good with cats. He's sleeping off his neuter anesthesia tonight and will be moving to Maine to a new foster home this weekend. We can't wait to have him here because my 16 month puppy needs a playmate! The only small animals we have here are stuffed and up on a high shelf. However, I think the xmas tree better come down before he and my own 80 pound puppy meet each other and its "game on"!!!! 12/19/09 - Casper has arrived! Casper had a long day in the car, jumping out of one and into another. He was happy to get to his final stop. He is sniffing everything he can find and didn't really care when he saw the cat. There is something about big dogs, they seem to have an identity crisis.....they think it is OK to be 70-80 lbs and want to be a lap dog. He doesn't take no for an answer. He is a snuggler. We will see how he does tonight. He likes the big yard. He has already found a comfortable spot to call his own, and best of all it is almost supper time! |
