| UPDATE 4/11/10 - Brady is such a good boy! It was so hard to imagine that it has just barley been two months. Brady and his SBC Sister Starr have been best buds since day one. Everyone was right on the advice that all Starr needs to calm her was a bigger brother. Brady did the trick! We have two boys 10 and 3 Brady had to learn that our three year old son did not need to be plowed down while playing. It wasn’t Brady’s fault at a tall 90 pounds he didn’t know his own strength.
Brady loves to ride in the car. We did the obedience classes in hope to improve his outside manners a bit, and so far so good. He is very protective of all of the members of our family and liked to show that while out for walks. So we worked very hard to overcome the “I’m the biggest dog in the park” attitude. We are planning our first full family outing in two weeks. We are taking the all four kids camping with us. We shall see how we manage with the dogs in the pop-up. Brady has had some rather serious health concerns since the day that we picked him up. We are still working with the vet to determine the cause of the itching and hairlessness. Brady came to us with mange, so we had to treat Starr as well. They have both ended the third round of meds this week. We have just changed the food again and it seems to be worker better for Brady. Then there was the call to poison control when he found a long lost tube of Destine diaper cream. He took a few good bites out of the nearly full tube and had a pretty gruesome stomach condition for several hours. All is better now. In the first few weeks we could not figure out why such a lovely beautiful boy would have to come back into rescue, then just as Brady got comfortable he showed his true colors. He has incredible anxiety issues. He got himself shut into my sons’ bed room one day after we went to work. He destroyed that room. Moved the dresser away from the wall, tore the window treatments off the walls, ripped up all the carpet, and stripped the bed. He was a scared and trapped animal in that room. He was not scolded when we got home you could tell that he was visibly stressed from his day. We went willingly into his crate and stayed there for hours without any prompting from us. We have had a few other destroyed items in the house including the kitchen table, but we are working on those issues each day that goes by. Brady is crating better now with less stress, our goal is to get him in the crate while we have to be out of the house to protect him and the house. Brady has found his forever home, he is such a gentle sweet dog. Our lives are better for the decision we have made to adopt Brady and his SBC sister Starr (adopted June 2009). UPDATE 2/23/10 - There are not enough words to express how wonderful Brady is. We were very nervous about the introduction of Brady to his boxer sister Starr that we adopted from SCBR in June 09. She is a very nervous girl and was in need of a playmate. Within two hours they were sleeping on the couch together. What an odd pair they are all 85 pounds of Brady compared to all 55 pounds of Starr Brady does not crate at this time, but we are working on it. He goes into his crate and will stay there when told to go lay down. He is so smart and has so much love to offer. We had a few encounters with the household cat, but once the cat stood his ground all was well. I'm so glad that we made the choice to adopt Brady. He is a true joy in this house. The two of them play so hard that they lay on the floor panting when they are done. I would say it is a perfect fit all the way around. Brady will be going through obedience class soon even though we do not feel that he needs to. His Sister dog Starr needs a refresher in the class. It is our hope to put them all the way through to advanced class. I'm sure that there will be further updates and pictures to come. 2/14/10 - I was adopted today! 2/5/10 - Brady has been with me a couple of weeks now. I will tell you he only gets better and better. This dog has such a loving personality. When I come in, he doesn't jump all over me and smother me, but he is right there telling me how much he missed me and wiggling up a storm. Brady does not crate, so he has the run of the house all day and also at night. The first 2 times I left him, he got into a little trouble, but nothing that bothered me. I think that was an adjustment period along with being alone for long periods of time at his adopted home. Since that time, he has been the perfect house guest. He loves to play with his toys. He pulls them all out and plays with them all. He likes to play fetch and is very good at dropping it for you to throw it again. I'm looking forward to the good weather, with no ice or snow, so he can really run outside. I take him with me to do errands. He is a very patient dog, never any fuss. Brady aims to please and is ever improving with his commands and obedience. I know there is someone out there that would be so happy to adopt an absolute treasure like Brady. Don't hesitate.................. 1/25/10 - I picked up Brady (formerly Bruno) Saturday morning. He is very timid, but is already coming out of his shell. He likes my treats and has found the toy box. The toys are everywhere! It must be like Christmas for him. He doesn't know what toy to play with, so he plays with them all! He came from a home that just didn't have the time for him with all the demands of the children - work, school, sports, etc. He has already been running laps in my backyard and loves the snow. I will take him to the dog park early Monday morning and let him get all of his pent up energy out. He is well mannered and knows some commands. He is easy to deal with. He rode very well on his transport. I will take him out with me to do errands and anywhere I can keep him with me. He was one of two dogs. They lost the other dog to cancer, so I'm sure Brady misses his pal and is very lonely. He needs a good family with children and activity. He will fit right as a loving member of any family. Don't wait too long. I know he will be on the move. He is a "catch". 2/15/09 - I was adopted! 2/2/09 - Boy oh boy, has Bruno started feeling at home! As a result, he's also getting himself into some puppy trouble. I can leave food out on the table and he won't touch it, but he did manage to remove the 4 tassels from a throw blanket, and he has a favorite plant which he likes to prune for me. I find that if I've kept him busy and exercised during the day, he's less likely to go on the hunt for his own entertainment. He has really come around with meeting new people, and greets almost everyone with boxer wiggles. Even my customers have noticed a huge difference in him. He is definitely treat motivated, and very easy to train. He finally figured out how to play with another dog, and gets along beautifully with my Rosco and my next door neighbor's mastiff/pit bull mix. He quickly gets the hint from Rosco when playtime is over, and will always back down if Rosco is claiming a toy as his own. Bruno is long and graceful, but I have yet to see him catch Rosco when the chase is on. We were finally able to go on a long walk, and Bruno seems to prance. He does get distracted when he sees another dog, but nothing a little practice won't take care of. He is wonderful with my kids, and only caused a problem when he tried to snuggle with my 3 year old and accidentally stepped on her before using her as a pillow. Although Bruno had a very rough start, at only 10 months old, he's got a long life ahead of him. I see him leaving his past behind, and looking forward to a future with a loving, confident family. Until then, he will continue to get all the hugs and kisses he needs right here. 1/22/09 - Well, it took a few days, but my sweet Bruno boy is starting to act like the puppy he is, albeit a very well behaved puppy. This beautiful boy is so tall, he can rest his chin on the kitchen table. Thankfully, he is not a beggar, and will stay out of the kitchen if you tell him to. Although he is always interested in whatever goodies my 3 yr old has in her hand, he has never tried to take it from her. He is not food aggressive, has no toy guarding issues, and on the occasion that he does pick up one of the kids toys, he readily drops it. The only time he attempted to counter surf was when one of his balls was up there. I have left food on the counter and table, and he leaves it alone. Even though he has clearly been abused, he is not skittish. Sudden movements and loud noises don't bother him at all. I can vacuum and sweep near him, and he's totally relaxed. Now that his feet are all healed, we went for our first real walk today to my son's bus stop, and he did very well. Although not perfect, with very little effort he can be. He is very aware of where I am, and will slow down with just a slight tug on the leash. If my son was lagging behind, Bruno would slow down and keep looking over his shoulder to make sure we didn't lose him. He met the group of elementary school kids at the bus stop, and was happy to see all of them. He also went right up to the other parent that was there. I think that as his confidence is building, he will become less fearful of strangers as time goes on. My next door neighbor came into my house, and Bruno behaved nicely. After a few minutes, he even went right up to her and leaned in for a pat. I think Bruno would definitely like another dog to play with, but more important than that is a family to call his own. He wants more than anything to love and be loved, and he certainly has that here. He will be eternally grateful and loyal to any family lucky enough to share their life with him. 1/19/09 - Well, Bruno has been here 4 days now, and seems to be settling in. He is a wonderful boy, just very confused. He seems to be well trained.. he knows sit, stay, lie down, paw, and he walks nicely on a leash. We haven't done too much walking, since the salt really irritates his feet (we've been soaking in epsom salts, which he seems to enjoy). He doesn't always come when you call him... I think he's not sure what's going to happen. I also don't think he responds to his name very well. Maybe Bruno sounds too much like NO. I'm working on making every time he comes to me a really positive experience. When we come home, he is full of boxer wiggles. As far as children, he needs to learn how to behave with them. He's not really a jumper, but if you start rough housing with him, he may jump and potentially hurt them. Right after I told my son "Don't run because Bruno might chase you", what do you think he did? And what do you think Bruno did? I think he can easily be taught how to play properly, so I'm going to say he's okay with small children with supervision. Bruno would like to play with a dog his own size. Unfortunately, my Rosco is being a bit of a bully, and not letting him play too much. Bruno is completely housetrained. He doesn't need to be crated, although he goes in willingly, and I sometimes find him in there with the door open. He sleeps on a dog bed in my bedroom at night, and has been left alone in the house without incident. I think Bruno will make a very loyal family member. He just needs a lot of patience when it comes to meeting new people. I find that if you ignore his barking, he will eventually warm up. I can't say anything else bad about this boy. He's very young, and I believe he can overcome his fears in a gentle loving home. Do you have it in your heart to give this beautiful boy a chance at living the life he deserves? 1/16/09- Bruno was an owner surrender to a local shelter. The owner found him on the city streets about 6 weeks ago. Prior to that, he appears to have a had a very rough time. He has some scars on him, including what looks like a cigarette burn. He is very nervous, but seems to be okay with everyone in my family, including my 6 yr old son and 3 yr old daughter. He was a little afraid of my husband at first, but responded well to his commands to sit, lie down and stay. His leash manners are good, and he doesn't jump on anyone or anything. He's had no accidents, although he's crated when unsupervised. He did a lot of whining the first day, but was quiet all through the night, and now goes in his crate willingly. Bruno is very cautious when meeting strangers. I brought him into the shop today, and he barked at everyone who came in. I think he needs some time to settle in. He is fine with all the dogs that come in, although he can only greet them through their crates. He had lots of wiggles and nub wagging for my dog Rosco, but I'm going to wait a few days before formally introducing them. I'm sure they will be fine, and will have a good time playing. I think Rosco may give him some much needed confidence. I gave him a bath, and he behaved very well. His feet are very red and irritated between the pads, and walking in the salt of the shelter parking lot really caused him a lot of pain. This morning, they were still very tender, and bleeding a bit, so I soaked them in some epsom salts, and that seems to have helped. This boy seems very sad and scared, and will need a very gentle hand to build up his confidence. He is very well mannered, and needs some time for his personality to shine. |
