| UPDATE 2/22/11 - Bentley is doing so much better!!!! He has been going to a special doggie daycare suggested by his trainer and he has come a long way with their help. He plays well with all the other dogs and they have taught him some manners( the other dogs I mean). We are still working with him letting unknown people into our house, he still growls at some people, but I think this will take a while. He is much better behaved if he has had a lot of exercise, so the doggie daycare has helped a lot. He is very much my Husbands' dog...he follows him around everywhere...I love to watch...he still makes us smile everyday! UPDATE 12/22/10 - Well, Bentley has been with us a little over 2 months now and he is improving everyday. We had our last training class last Saturday and I was able to let him off leash and he came back to me when I called!! This is a huge step. He can sit, give paw, lay down, and heel but he still has a problem with stay. He is getting better walking by other dogs on leash, not as reactive as he used to be. He is still growling at certain people coming into our house, the trainer says it is fearful behavior and we can work on it. He is great fun to watch in the snow...he likes to chase snowballs. Best of all , he makes us smile everyday! UPDATE 11/15/10 - BentleyII has had some challenges..or maybe they are my challenges. He is very reactive to some dogs walking by on leashes and some dogs he loves to play with, I am not quite sure what sets him off, but he is improving with the training class I am bringing him to. The trainer assures me he will be fine with some patience and practice. On a lighter note he is feeling secure enough to be a puppy!!! He decided to tear apart a pillow filled with tiny strofoam balls, yes, they are everywhere in our house! When he is good he is very very good but when he is bad, he is still adorable! UPDATE 10/21/10 - Bentley is adjusting well to his new home. He has doggie friends next door and across the street that he plays with. We have friends that have a 2 year old boxer and the have a play date tonight! He went to the vet yesterday and she said he was a healthy boy. He even let her clean his ears and look at his teeth, no growling! We start obedience training at the end of the month, but I think he will pass with flying colors. More updates to come! 10/16/10 - I was adopted today! 10/12/10 - Bentley continues to growl at strangers entering the house. He doesn't make any attempt to go toward them but has a deep growl that sounds frightening to non-dog people. He also is beginning to show signs of aggression towards certain dogs. He has picked fights with one of our seniors a few times over the last couple of days. Everything is fine for hours and then they just walk by each other harmlessly and then wham! We are working on this issue with him and if he goes to a home with other dogs, that will have to be a top priority as well as working on him meeting strangers. We have hold of him when people arrive, not taking any chances and he is fine after they are in the house for a while. Other than that, he is absolutely a great dog with our family. He constantly kisses Mabel which I believe he thinks is his honey. Can't figure out why he is so good with Mabel and seems to hate Maggie....the most passive of our 3 girls but we are working on that every day. He might be better suited in a home with no other dogs to be on the safe side. 10/9/10 - Bentley came back into rescue yesterday. I guess he wasn't a good fit for his adoptive family. Bentley has had his whole universe turned upside down and inside out over the last month and a half. He has been with 2 families and is now with his second foster home. No wonder he is timid and scared. Bentley was very timid when we brought him here with both ppeople and our dogs. He appears to need a few minutes to get himself together when meeting new people and animals. Once you let him come to you and a few scratches and rubs, he is fine but you can't force yourself on him. He is treat-motivated so that will help with future introductions. It's been less than 24 hours and he is already feeling at home and comfortable with everything. He loves to plunk his skinny butt right on top of you and sit there waiting to be petted. He has already found a playmate in Mabel and they have been running the entire house this morning playing grab-ass, mouthing and tug-o-war with his toys. He listens extemely well for a Boxer less than 2 years old. There is something very special about Bentley and when I can put my finger on it, I will fill you in. All I can say right now is that Bentley is one very special boy that will melt your heart the minute you lay eyes on him. UPDATE 9/14/10 - Bentley is adjusting to my home life and family very well. He loves to take trips in the car and follows me around like he is my shadow. His health is great. Eats twice a day and love to due laps in the back yard. Haven't started training yet. 9/6/10 - I was adopted today! 8/31/10 - I've been getting to know Bentley for the past few days and he is a character. He has this habit of wanting to stand on you with all four of his feet when we sit on the couch. He's no featherweight so I've been trying to get him to just sit next to me. Well he puts the sad face on [and works it very well] then sinks into the corner of the couch cushion so his belly is sticking out and his paws in the air kind of half bent. Almost like the I give up pose, and then tilts his head on the pillow and stares at you, pitifully. I also found out he likes to jump in the bathtub while I get ready for work. Mind you, he wasn't actually invited upstairs - the little stinker just hurdled over the gate to the stairs; So, we we will be working on his jumping along with his food issue. But I have to say he was great with the cats. Really only chased them for a split second or two, then he decided it was more fun to jump on my bed, then on the floor, run into the closet, then run into the other room to do it all over again. Silly boy is kind of afraid of the dogs water bowl. We have a big fountain type bowl and he kept staring at it. He watches the water flow and backs up while grumbling at it. I had just filled it up again and put some ice in the reserve tank and the ice moved on him. He He. What a Big baby! Today I decided to get ready downstairs and hang out with him and he became fascinated by me brushing my teeth. He likes the taste of toothpaste [I gave just an itty bitty bit]. So for all you thinking about making Bentley part of your family...he'll be the cleanest, most handsome boxer on the block with the sweetest smelling breath. How great is that! Bentley took a little while to get used to being here in new surroundings but today, I was able to get him and Marvin out in the backyard playing together. I kept telling him he didn't know what he was missing but he didn't believe me. Marvin LOVES to play. Poor Bentley didn't know Marvin bends himself like rubber and is able to get you from every angle - plus he runs like the wind and doesn't stop so Bentley's tongue was dragging after only 10 minutes. He was exhausted, but he made a new friend. Good day for Bentley.... 8/28/10 - Bentley comes to us from owners who are going through some health issues and can't properly care for him. He lived with children ages 3 thru 13 and another, older, boxer. He gets along with cats, but can be possessive when it comes to his food or treats. We'll see how all that plays out in his new foster home or if it was just a product of the turmoil in the house. He sleeps in his crate at night, but is used to having someone around during the day to let him come and go. The family reports that he is a very loving and energetic boy. |
