| UPDATE 2/19/11 - Hi everyone. Beauty here, well I've been in my new home for 4 months and do I ever love it here. The people are so nice and my adoptive brother Slick is a jewel, we have a pretend fight almost everyday and wrestle around on our couch and the livingroom floor, there's never a winner but that's OK.
One of my favorite things to do is to charge out the dogdoor and race to the fence facing the neighbors house and bark and bark, our people say that something will have to be done about all this barking. I usually bark at nothing but sometimes there is really something to bark at and sometimes Slick joins me. Slick has a funny bark, I call it a "smokers bark", sounds kind of husky and gravelly and very manly. I think people long ago tried to make it so Slick couldn't bark but it didn't work out right. Anyhow I like his bark, it seems to fit him and he doesn't mind that he has a different kind of bark. I think Slick is just wonderful and incredibaly handsome, another favorite thing that I do is to keep Slick well groomed, this involves a great deal of licking and mothering, he really enjoys it and so do I. Our people wanted me to mention how obedient Slick and I are, even though we haven't finished our formal obedience training. Whenever we hear "kennel" we go to our crates right away and we don't complain at all, we also sit and wait patiently for our food and don't beg for people food. We still need more practice walking on a leash but that will have to wait for winter to end, hope it's soon. One last thing, if you were to see me today you wouldn't recognize me, I look nothing like the pictures above, which were taken before I was adopted. I look like a normal female boxer, perhaps a little on the small side. I do still have Boxer Colitis and probably always will. The medicine I was taking has really helped control some of the problems I was having. My eyes are bright, my mind is sharp and I have boundless energy and I love life. And I want to thank the nice lady who made me the lovely purple coat that keeps me warm when I go outside and all the wonderful people that helped get me to this happy place. Until next time, Beauty. UPDATE 11/20/10 - Beauty is truly a beauty! This wonderful female has found the perfect companionship with Slick who we also adopted. They even seem to be in love! Beauty has simply blossomed in weight and happiness since she has made her home with us. She is still on meds and will be for some time we think. Her meds are being adjusted as needed but she is doing very well. She has even developed somewhat of a fat roll around her neck and pads along her torso but she is still a dainty little girl. She keeps Slick exercised through daily wrestling matches and they love to fly in and out of the dog doors and run around their new yard and check out activity next door. She even met Peaches the neighbors Cockatoo. Peaches hissed at Beauty but not Slick. Hmmm...we'll see how things develop with that. We bought them a nice (used) couch which they love to snuggle on and beauty will even watch TV while Slick just snores away. They are enjoying laying on the carpet near the woodstove when there is a fire. If we are able, we will add photos and video clips to any new update in the future. Obedience training is in the works as my sister-in-law has a new business called dogwiseobedience.com in Munjoy Hill (Portland, Me) and Christine is due to make some regular visits to our home for private lessons. She may even post photos of us on her website. So, watch for updates etc. Both dogs shake paws, sit, come when called or whistled at very well. But, there is much more we can accomplish! Christine is wonderful! Check her out! (Christine Kiley) That's all for now. We feel very fortunate to have these wonderful Boxers. We are a very happy family! 10/8/10- After all kinds of wonderful care and 10 pounds gained, I was adopted today!!!! 9/28/10 - Beauty was weighed again this morning. Disappointing! The little witch is running off everything that is fed to her!! She only gained one pound. She now weighs 41.3 lbs. She looks good for being so thin, but is steadily building lots of muscle. I just had to stop a half hour wrestling match. That is no way to gain weight. Her housebreaking issues are slowly being resolved. I hope the accidents are in the past. She doesn't seem to have any problems with the dog door any more. She still likes to have me go out with her. Every waking hour, she wants to play! She is very good at working over Fenway and he sleeps well after they wrestle. She usually keeps an eye on me and if she isn't playing, she is my shadow. She still loves to be petted, but is still head shy. I have to be very careful not to spook her. She bounces around the yard on those long legs like a capering deer! Her body length is 20 inches and I am sure her legs are as well, if not more! Stuffed toys have a very short life with her. I have spent a lot of time picking up the "snow-fall"! 9/18/10 - Things that I've learned about Beauty: ~She has finally learned the dog door, but doesn't care to go outside without a human. If she needs to go out, she comes to get me and won't go out without me. She still needs to gain a lot of confidence! ~She is very head-shy and will run/duck away if she thinks that you are trying to grab her. She is also very shy if you have ANYTHING in your hand. She is afraid of a piece of paper, back-scratcher, broom, outside hand tools, etc. In other words, she has been abused! ~She is slowly settling down on some things. She seems to know that I am not going to do her any harm. But she is very skittish. ~We have a new toy in the house. I bought an Air-Dog stick. It squeaks on both ends. I gave it to Beauty to play with and she took it into her crate. She now has a possession! Her new home will have to get her one when she is adopted. 9/14/10 - Beauty still has pretty loose bowel movements, still with tinges of blood. She continues on her meds. I started her out on 4 meals a day. By last Thursday, she was down to 3 meals a day and continues on 3 meals a day. She really needs the food. She actually gets almost as much by volume in one meal as my adults get in one day! She has fairly frequent bowel movements, but they are small compared to what is ingested. We all know that when a dog or any animal gets too thin, they eventually start using muscle to keep the brain alive. So the first order of business for Beauty was not only nourishment, but building muscle. Fenway has been helping with that. They wrestle almost non-stop, or so it seems! She has great energy! Beauty loves to play, eat and sleep, but not necessarily in that order. She is very social with all the dogs as well as being a pretty good human watcher. I'm a bit afraid that the great food that was donated for her may be a bit too rich for her system as yet. I am only adding a small amount to start. This morning, she went to the vet for her "weigh-in". The following pictures show what gaining 4 lbs. looks like in a week! This gal has a great personality! She is also very cute when she is "mooching". Beauty sits very attentively while I am eating, and watches. It doesn't take long before she has a rather vocal "yawn". If that doesn't make me feel guilty, she then has these little tiny "woofs" that are meant to just remind me that she would like to be my "taste tester". These little woofs can also be slightly high pitched. Sometimes she creeps a bit closer. Meanwhile those beautiful brown eyes are appealing to me to please feel guilty and take pity on her and relinquish my lunch. After all, her attitude seems to suggest that since I am overweight, and she is underweight, that I do not need the food! Another, vocal yawn! Then I finish my lunch and the look I get is priceless! I'm a meany and didn't share! Beauty said so! 9/7/10 - Beauty saw the vet this morning. After that, I called the number on her Rabies tag. She was given a 3 yr. shot on 8-3-09. As of this morning, she is HW negative. We even have a dob! She is the same meds, only she has a new script. 9/4/10 - Beauty arrived at the Log Cabin around 4:40 this afternoon and she will eventually be beautiful. She has the nicest black mask and seems to have a very sweet deposition. She has met my crew, all of them, by accident and other than a lot of sniffing going on, there was no problem. Then I gated my dogs on the deck and she had the yard to herself for a few minutes. She ate a pretty good supper, but a small one. She will have more a bit later on. Her nails are very long. She is pathetically thin and will be seeing the vet on Tuesday. More as I get to know her. |
| Beauty is suffering from the worst case of Ulcerative Colitis we've seen in 12 years of this rescue. Yet, she is STILL a Beauty in heart and spirit. Please consider donating to her care. She will need weeks of antibiotics and veterinary monitoring. Click here to donate. Beauty thanks you. |
