UPDATE 2/19/11 - Well, after a tearful adieu with foster-momma Maggie, Miss Bailey settled in quite nicely for the 2 ½ hr jaunt back to Philadelphia.  After about ten minutes, she was resting her head upon the back row of the seats from the rear compartment upon her doggy mat in the SUV, with the occasional kisses for the two girls who have been dying to meet her for weeks.
We introduced her to her new yard, which seems only a bit smaller than what she was used to, and then she nibbled on some chow – ok, she inhaled it.  She met her big half-sister, Jazzy, and checked out the entire house. After some sniffing and smelling, we had some tug-o-war and some friendly boxing – stubs up and wiggling, forepaws sprawled and then jabbing, then pouncing, then sprawling … what a sight to behold!! Then, we all settled in to watch the Eagles game. The neighbor children came by last night to meet their newest neighbor, a brief 5 minute visit before leaving for Scouts – Bailey was a riot, nervous at first and wiggly soon after. If she could have backed her way into my front pocket, I believe she would have!!!
She slept throughout the night without a peep and we awoke to two wiggling butts and a whole bunch of tap dancing. Jazzy has been very gracious and accepting of her new step-sister. We’ve had outdoor running, romping, barking and boxing this morning while I raked up some leaves and scooped up the poop – ew! And, now the two girls are laying together on the dog-couch as I make this entry and prepare for my studies; lunch around 12:30.  Later today we’ll meet the neighbor’s fuzzy youngster, Ted the Shih-tzu!!  It’s been a wonderful early Christmas present for everyone here!!
Thanks for allowing us to join the extended SCBR family.  Pictures will come soon and more updates to follow!!

12/4/10 - We had our first bath today – both Bailey and Jazzy together – what a riot!  Then, after drying for a couple of hours, we went on our first tour of the neighborhood.  Bailey pulls a little bit on the lease but she does well enough.  We’ll have to be diligent at teaching her how to walk while on the leash – she’s got a good bit of strength for such a petite girl!
Getting along just fine with the elder Jazzy and the two girls!!

12/2/10 - Bailey has been adopted!

Bailey has been having lots of fun this week...she looks like such a happy little girl now. She's been playing non-stop with Marvin and it usually starts right after breakfast. She eats very fast so she has to wait a bit but once marvin is done, its game on. Couch cushions everywhere...10 rounds of wrestling...and blankets become a game of tug o'war. Me and sasha just stay out of their way until I have to get ready for work and bailey has to be crated. I try to come home for lunch as much as possible so I can let bailey out. One reason is I hate to see her in the crate as much as she is - but she has to spend the day crated while I'm at work because of her aversion for my cats. I do work from home two days a week so its not super horrible, but I still would like it to be cut down to a few hours a day only. If it wasn't for the cats, I would let her be free in the house.  She is not destructive at all and has even become friendlier with my girl Sasha. When she is in her crate, she's stressed. Poor girl licks her front paws raw and it pains me to see that. What I would love to see for Bailey is that she finds a home with at least two patient people [it will help so much with her anxiety when you have to leave her sight], no cats, I think she would like a dog, most likely a male, and someone to cuddle on the couch with her. Somedays she finishes her play time with Marv early and she likes to curl up on a soft, cozy blanket next to me and take a nap while I rub her ears. I know she's in heaven when I hear her itty bitty snore. It really is an easy wish list, and she is such a sweet, sweet love. She is so very worth taking the time to give her a second chance.

Bailey has had big improvements since the last update. Why the breakthrough? I think it's because I didn't push her. I just let her be herself. It's kind of obvious Bailey operates on her own timeline. You ever see the big construction dump trucks with the sign on the back that says Don't Push?? That's Bailey. She's just takes a little longer to adjust and get comfortable. For instance - new people. She does fine meeting both women and men- as long as they don't push themselves on her. When they stick to the rules, not even a grumble out of her. And all without treats to coax her into submission. With kids - she was quite nervous with my teenage neighbors for a good while whenever she saw them. Hair stood up, couldn't get away fast enough. Today I saw a huge change in her reaction and body language as compared to her earlier reactions. She can get used to kids over 12 who understand when to leave her alone. Bailey wants you when she wants you, but will tell you when she's done with you. On the upside to her "mini moods", she gives a lot of signals when she's getting peeved. Very easy to read. However, I am going to say she isn't ready to be with kids under 4. She spooks too easily and that's when she may/may not become aggressive. Plus she's so excitable - she throws a mean right hook [her nails are killer even when super short] and can get mouthy. Now as for cats...Absolutely NO. She doesn't know when to stop and it isn't pretty. She really likes Marvin...Still just tolerating Sasha. Bailey still has some intermittent issues with my girl but she listens well so it doesn't escalate into much more than a grumble complete with stink eye, or at the very most its a crabby girl squabble. Sasha wants to play with her but once she initiates play time with Bailey, B turns it into a dominance display over Sasha which I don't allow. If I don't get there first, Marvin puts himself in the middle and she's fine with that.  Bailey has even been spending a lot more time outside in the yard with Marvin and Sasha.  She discovered all the basketballs, soccer balls, kick-balls and such in the toy box. Marvin pulls them out for her and she chases him all over the yard trying to steal it off of him. She also found the rope tuggies - her and Marv give those a serious workout. Between the two of them they are wiping out my supply of toys very quickly. Toy carnage is everywhere.

10/5/10 -
Bailey is such good little house guest. So nice to not have a jumper and she's too short to counter surf! She does whine and cry when she doesn't see me, but if she hears me she stops. No matter where I am in the house, I always talk to Bailey so she knows I'm still here. I think in time she will get out of the whining habit once she feels secure in her situation and if you talk to her, she does wind down. For being uprooted a bunch of times, I think she's doing as well as can be expected. She still needs some time and patience to adjust but overall she's a trooper and will overcome the slight bit of anxiety she does have. Bailey is very well mannered and doesn't destroy anything or try to break free from behind the gates.
Crating Bailey isn't bad either. She will go in if you give her a treat and tell her to go in. But - she needs the command ...she won't just chase the treat. Bailey sleeps in the crate at night until I can fully trust her with my dogs and cats. She does carry on but stops if I tell her too. I do see her go into my girl Sasha's crate without a problem which makes me think she either doesn't like where her crate is, or its not as cozy as Sasha's, or maybe she just likes it because she can smell Sasha. Whatever the reason, something isn't ideal for her, but I bet once you get the right combination for her, Bailey will be even easier to crate and she may even learn to enjoy it.
Everyday her personality shines through a bit more. She gave me the multiple WOOO business today for getting home late today with her dinner. She's totally loving her meals and she's the quite the pushy little piglet when it comes to chow. As soon as I pull up the bowls she's got her head buried in the feeder where the food is stored. Oink Oink Oink.
She still isn't too jazzed about being outside. Bit odd but that's Bailey. Marvin tries to get her to run and play with him outside but she's more content to wrestle with him and play chewy face in the house. She likes my dogs but her feelings towards them swing like a pendulum. Some days she likes them, other days she's little miss bitchy Bailey towards both of them, but...she definitely prefers Marvin over Sasha. She tolerates Sasha [mostly because I make her] but I bet if I could read her mind her grumbles would be translated into something like why that short pudgy one is still here. LoL!

10/2/10-
Bailey is becoming noticeably more comfortable here in the house and outside. She's not startling herself when she clanks the food bowl against the floor getting every last little morsel out. [Using the elevated feeder is helping with that] She is starting to zoom around the room and pick up some toys and play on her own. Outside in the yard, she's doing Ok but she doesn't like to stay outside unless you convince to hang out a bit longer. Keep that in mind when she when taking her out for potty breaks. She whizzes, then runs back inside; but then needs to go out 5 minutes later to finish. *Bailey Bonus*....she even goes out in the rain. Apparently she didn't get the memo that boxers, [the canine equivalent to snowmen] melt in the rain. Not certain on the cats yet. The cats were behind a closed door and Bailey was trying pretty hard to get at them; however, her reaction is still a little too intense for me to let her close to them yet. Her and Marvin are doing well through the baby gate, the play exchanges are getting more frequent and her scared girl snarling is on the decline. They haven't truly met yet but my stinker marvin sneaked a kiss over the gate and she was totally fine. Getting there, but all in due time.

So Bailey met my Marvin and Sasha. She plays rough, and is loud and sounds like she's trying to eat Marvin, but he loves it.

9/19/10
- Bailey arrived Saturday afternoon and is settling in just fine. I'm letting Bailey take all the time she needs to get comfortable and totally relax since her last two owners were on the Evelyn Woods plan of dog adoption. From what the shelter had told us, [first owner is unknown], her second family - adopted and returned her two weeks later. Because she is a pocket sized little cutie, was quickly adopted again for a whopping 5 days before she was surrendered for the third time in her life, to which, in their vast experience, they suggested the shelter euthanize her upon surrender.
Unfortunately for Bailey, it was a bad match. Her last family had never owned a boxer and was clearly not familiar with the breed and promptly returned Bailey with a thorough assessment of her. However, from what I can see, it is pretty much thoroughly wrong. Bailey is very sweet, truly such a love - that they got right; but everything that was claimed to be wrong with Bailey was just what you see when you rush a dog and expect perfection out of the gate. For this reason, I'm going to hold off on her top box basic info for a few days - after I introduce her to my dogs. There is just such a discrepency that I can't understand their opinions of Bailey with cats, dogs, people, crates and separation anxiety. I did take the comments with a grain of salt and that's about it. Bailey was said to be "so afraid" of men but the volunteers who picked her up from the shelter didn't see it. Didn't look to me like Bailey was afraid of the transporter's husband. A bit apprehensive at the most. [Shocking].
Bailey was said to be fearful, territorial and aggressive with dogs but I'm not seeing that either. I took her for a walk by my house so I could briefly introduce through the fence and yes, I did see Bailey's hair stand up and she reacted. She's not ready [Again, what a shock] so I simply told her don't worry about them - you'll meet them when your ready. Wouldn't you know it, on the way back she didn't do a thing when she saw Marvin and Sasha. I get the feeling that Bailey was a.) introduced way too fast and b.) her play noises were mistaken for aggression. I had Bailey in her crate, let Marvin out and he was play bowing outside of her crate - she was playfully, and loudly, responding back to him while in her crate. That's what they do. I'll let you know what happens when they formally meet but I'm not anticipating anything than true rough and tumble boxer play. Until then, she gets to hang out with me and just be Bailey. Nothing more, nothing less...and I think she's pretty great the way she is.

9/18/10 - Itty bitty Bailey arrived today. We'll tell you all about her as we get to know her, but we already know she is a such a tiny little love munchkin, great passenger in the car and is quite the nibbler on my fingers and skin - but she's a peach.
