| UPDATE 7/4/10 - Roxy has been here for a year now...time sure does fly. She has been a great addition to our home. She is a good companion for both people and dog alike. Roxy LOVES going for walks on the orchard. We have worked out a system where she is safe being off leash to run and sniff in the back part of the orchard and then she is on-leash around the farm animals. They still bother her a bit, but she is learning to be more relaxed around them. I've tried to get her into the pond, but she appears to view the water as something that will attack her the minute she gets in. Not a water dog! With Ellie, my other dog, she is patient and loving. She snuggles up with Ellie and is careful (usually) around her aging joints and muscles.
Roxy does have some separation anxiety, especially if I am outside but still around the house. I suspect this summer will be the last for Ellie, and I'm a bit worried about how Rox will do as an only dog. I've started to take Ellie out without Roxy so she gets used to being the house by herself. We'll both be sad to lose Ellie, and I'll be appreciative to have Roxy's cheerful and loving personality around when that time comes. One of the best things about Roxy is her zest for life. She loves doing everything, especially if it is with me. She makes me laugh daily, and I'm so happy to have her. UPDATE 1/2/10 - Roxy continues to do well! She enjoyed all of the company over the holidays, especially my parents who agreed with her that she is a lap dog! She had a number of naps on laps. She earned some off-leash time again, and is now happily running throughout the orchard. We aren't going by the animals, but she seems to be working on ignoring them from afar for now. This helps a lot with getting her energy out. I'm so glad to have her! She has the funniest personality, and makes me laugh every day. UPDATE 11/1/09 - Roxy is doing great! She lives life with enthusiasm, from heading outside to go to the bathroom to heading to the bedroom at bedtime. If only I had that much excitement over mundane aspects of life. She sleeps most nights with Ellie, especially as it gets colder. One downside to her life-she has lost her off leash privileges because she developed an interest in the chickens on the orchard. Not a 'play with me, be my friend' interest, but a 'you look like KFC' interest.' So, we are back on the leash and working on ignoring the farm animals. She is getting better, but they either make her nervous or she wants to eat them. Roxy also went camping last month. I'm not sure if she ever went camping before. She was fine during the day, but the combination of dark and the fire seemed to bother her. She spent most of the evening trying to sit on Ellie. I think she really just wondered how we had traded in a nice big house for such a small flimsy thing (tent). All in all though, she was good and we will try it again in the spring. Her daily life consists of walks on the orchard, sleeping in her favorite chair, and lots of hugs and love from me. She seems to think it's all pretty good! UPDATE 8/30/09 - Roxy is fantastic! We just got back from a long run around the orchard. She ran and ran and ran, said hi to the sheep, and then ran some more. The sheep didn't appreciate her enthusiastic greeting, and I can see Roxy plotting how to actually get in to their space. Now she is crashed out on the floor next to Ellie. Roxy has also discovered the TV remote, the kleenex box, and the left over gum wrapper. I need to do a better job of picking up around the house before I left. A friend sent a gift for the dogs which I didn't open right away. The next day I came home to find it opened and spread out around the house. I guess she knew it was for her. All said, she makes me laugh daily. She lounges in her favorite chair at night and runs around the orchard during the day...a good life. She is enthusiastic, but not over the top. She did great with all of the company I had in August. I'm delighted to have her! UPDATE 7/30/09 - Roxy has been in my home for just over a month. She's fitting in great! She loves my 12-year lab, Ellie. At night, Roxy prefers to snuggle up with Ellie, although Ellie isn't always sure about that! Roxy and I have been working daily on walking on a leash, sitting to go in and out of the house, and off leash behavior. I live on a working orchard, so I'd like to let her off leash to run around. She's good about staying around me just outside the house, but I need to get her to a place where she will always come when called before we explore more of the orchard off leash. The orchard provides all sorts of new smells. So far, Roxy has been introduced to sheep, chickens, and horses that live on the orchard. She was so intrigued by the horses that she tried to leap over the 4 foot gate. Thankfully she didn't make it-but she sure can jump high! The training has really helped with bonding. Roxy has settled in well, and clearly sees me as her new 'person.' We've been working through some separation anxiety and finally abandoned the use of the crate as that caused a ton of stress. She's still anxious when I leave, but doesn't destroy anything. All in all, everything is going well. Roxy has the greatest facial expressions, and she makes me laugh all of the time. She's the perfect energy level for my house-enough energy to be fun and entertaining but not so much that she overwhelms my older dog. I'm so happy to have her! 6/30/09 - Miss Roxy went home with her wonderful new family today! 6/9/09 - Hi, Just a quick update on our Roxy girl. Shes doing great. She has finally gotten over her crate stress. She doesnt drool at all any more. ( Thats a huge change ) She has been sleeping upstairs with us on her dog bed, Shes no trouble at all. She just loves to be with me, where ever i go. I enjoy her being here, she can stay as long as she needs to. I just cant figure out why shes still here. She is a great gal what else can I say. 5/27/09 - Hi out there, is there anyone listening? My name is Roxy and im living here in PA with my foster mom and family. She says ive been here awhile and cant figure out why. I dont know why either. Im such a good girl and im having alot of fun here. My foster mom was having a a hard time over the weekend and she was very sad (Im not sure why, but I could tell) So I just sat with her for a long time. When she went to bed I just layed on the floor, I wanted to be there in case she needed me. I think shes feeling better now, Whhhuuu. I was worried. She told me I was s special girl and gave me lots of hugs. I loved hugs!!! She tells me Im still waiting for my forever home. So im waiting.......... Ok someone come get me , Ill be your friend. Ok, Bye for now. luv, Roxy 5/19/09 - Roxy is doing great here. She has totally settled in. I think she even feels better since she had some dental work done. She has totally become my buddy, she goes whereever I go and is so well behaved. I hope my boxer baby will grow up to be that good. ( Shes 14 months) She still has some crate stress but it is 100 times better than when she first got here. She loves her belly rubs and just to be with us. She's a wonderful girl. She's a welcome guest at our house. 5/12/09 - My Roxy girl had a long day at the vet yesterday. She had some bad teeth pulled and had a infection in one. That was the weird smell and the cause of the bleeding. But, all is well. They all loved her at Dr. Chick's office. Many of the gals who work there have boxers. She has lost a little weight, shes at 55lbs now. She was sleepy when she got home. She did great. My son has really bonded with her. I look in our living room and they are sitting on the couch watching t.v. together. Its so cute. I dont have any thing bad to say about her. She is a good girl who wants to be with her humans and fur family too. You can see in her eyes how much love she has to give. Are you the one she will give all her love to? 5/5/09 - cant say enough about this great gal. She is so loving and kind. We went for a walk this weekend (between the rain drops) she was great. She got tired though my one year old boxer was still ready to go, she was a trooper. She is a wonderful house guest, doesnt bother a thing. She likes to be with her humans and lay at your feet or lap or your side. We sit on the porch in the evening sometimes and is very well behaved, never leaves my side. She is very smart and loves to please. But she has one problem, she still needs to find her forever home. Are you out there somewhere? She is a shining star. 4/28/09 - Foxy Roxy hsa been here in PA almost a week now and slowly settling in. Not a big fan of the crate, but she's getting better every day. We had a fun weekend here with the weather being so nice. We went for a walk, had a bath, and trimed some toe nails. All I can say is she was perfect and sweet the whole time. She loves to run in the yard and kick up her heels! Its pretty funny to watch. She never barks unless my shi tzu gets her going. She love, loves to be with us. She doesn't jump up with you unless you invite her. She is a total love bug! She is great with the boys and loves to have her belly rubbed. She will make someone a wonderful pal. Get those apps in on on this great girl. 4/23/09 - Roxy has arrived at our house safe and sound. Im sending some pics, Im going to get some better ones. All I can say is, what a dream! So far, she has fit right in with everyone, boxer, shi tzu, kids, my mom. She knows her basic commands, sit, shake, down, stay. Walks great on a leash. Goes in the crate with no trouble. She was once hit by a car and has a large scar running down the back of her front leg. It doesnt bother her at all. She jumps on and off the couch and up the steps. If it wasnt sooo big you would never know she was hit. I felt all over to see if there was any other lumps or bumps, I didnt find any. You would never know she was 6 except she has some gray around her nose. What can I say? Shes going to make a family very happy! I will update more as she settles in. |
