UPDATE 11/30/09 - First Update:  11-30-09 (Sorry we missed the first update – I had carpal tunnel surgery)
We decided to change Pedro’s name to Jake; he began responding to it quickly.  I would like to post some photos but have been unsuccessful with it.  His appearance has changed so much and I would love to see recent photos of his brothers and sisters.  He has lost most of any black coloring he may have had.  Currently the bottom three quarters of his tail and the lower part of his muzzle is black.   His chin is white and he has some white on his chest.  The rest of him is completely fawn colored.  He does look like he has black eye liner around his eyes.  His feet are large and there is one ear that sometimes looks like it may stand up straight.
We had some difficulties at first with diarrhea; which was finally resolved after a couple trips to the vet, some food trials, a round of anti-biotics and a worming treatment.  He recently weighed in at 30lbs on 11-13-09, is digesting food well and he appears to be very healthy and is extremely active.
Jake’s best buddy is Duke (a boxer) who we adopted in 2006.  They have become very close and can often be found cuddled up to each other on the couch or in front of the wood stove. Duke has been very patient and forgiving when Jake decides it is time to play.
Recently he has started barking to let us know what he wants.  He will sit by the tub and bark for a bath, and will go to the door and bark to go out.  However, he still has the occasional accident in the house.  At first he really didn’t like having his nails trimmed but our last attempt went pretty well.  He likes hiking through woods, boat rides, TV and especially truck rides.  We have made one trip to the beach where he had a good day experiencing new smells.  He has met many friends and family along with several other dogs.  We have gone into many stores and he always behaves well.
It has been a busy two months, he has grown so much and has gained a tremendous amount of confidence.  I am looking forward to the next month and hopefully will learn how to add a photo to the update page before the next update is due.  If anyone knows how to do this please let me know.

9/18/09 - I was adopted today!

8/12/09 - I will be trying to do a photo shoot of Diamond and each of her puppies.  I know everyone is wanting to see some pictures.  They really do RUN and do not stop.  It will be a challenge but I will certainly give it a shot.  They are so cute.  I call them the itty bitty beasts.  They are so FAT.  They have huge heads and all make this ferocious sounding growl.  It is so funny as they have no teeth.  They think they will gnaw you lol.  Too cute.  Pedro is doing great.  Gaining weight quickly.  His weght today is a whopping 4 lbs.

8/10/09 - We will be ready to go home on 9/14/09 when we turn 8 weeks old!

7/30/09 - Its been 10 days since the puppies were born. They're twice the size they were when they popped out. They are quite talkative, especially when they get separated from each other. Their eyes and ears still haven't opened, but they seem to know what's going on around them. Isn't Nature just cool? We had a scare the last couple days. Some of the pups stopped eating and were pretty lethargic. We lost one and were devastated. Then I noticed that others were having other problems, so there was a fast trip to the vet. Nothing seemed wrong, tests all negative... it just happens to puppies, I'm told. But, she gave some of them fluids for dehydration, antibiotics and dewormer to cover all the bases. I also started dropper feeding the weaker ones puppy formula when they still didn't want to nurse. Unfortunately, I lost one more (two males), but the others really seem to have turned a corner. Now everyone is nursing like crazy. They've had two days of antibiotics and seem perkier. I've also given in to Diamond's insistance that they be in my bedroom closet. She seems much more relaxed... so whatever helps, I guess. Some of the bigger, rolly polly pups have even ventured out into the room. I found one sleeping in the middle of the floor just like the grown up dogs. Diamond doesn't even care if the other dogs in the house come and sniff, nudge, and watch- but she's not too pleased if its the other female. Sooooo, fingers and toes  crossed that the rest will stay healthy!

7/20/09 - The puppies are here! The puppies are here!!! Early early this morning, Lady Di (
Diamond) gave birth to 8 beautiful puppies!!! There are 5 males and 3 females. They're brown, black and everyone has some white somewhere. There are two I call "the twins (top R corner) and as you can see, some have black bandit masks. One has white socks and one has white boots (she's going to be the litter's ring leader [aka stinker!], you can already tell after 12 hours). Diamond is such a wonderful mother. She cleaned everyone and keeps them huddled all together near her belly. They're a bunch of screamers, but she answers every single one of their whimpers. Good job little girl!

7/18/09 - Our girl is getting HUGE! I think I'll be a foster nana by this time next week. I update her new family so often, I forget to update everyone else on here! This is one happy little girl, lemme tell you. She's never met a soul she doesn't like. She's so calm. Of course, right now, she can't be very hyper because her body gets in her way. Laying down is a kinda three-step process that starts with her back legs and moves its way up her body: Her back legs stop moving whilelher front legs keep going until she is strectched out far enough that the belly hits the floor. Then she flops over onto her side. Poor thing actually moans in her sleep if she's not stretched all the way out. She's an awfully little girl for having so many pups inside.
I joke that we're making our own "designer breed", the Boxweiller... (I think all these hybrids out there, that we used to call "mutts" are just silly lol). I can't wait to see what these little guys look like. White? Black? Checkerboard?
She hasn't started nesting or anything yet. I'm afraid she'll be giving birth on my bed because that's her favorite place. She's picky about eating, right now, so I try to fine a time when it looks like the pups are quiet in there and not kicking her in the stomach. She'll lay on her side and you can actually see one roll over. Every now and then, one little head or paw will rear up and it looks like a scene from the movie Alien right before they hatch!! Its SO COOL to feel it happen, though! I'll have my hand on her belly and a little something will poke me, or one will roll and there will be a ripple against my palm. neat....
We should start a baby pool. Some time in the next week.....

7/7/09 - Little Diamond made it up here to Maine over the holiday weekend. She's probably THE sweetest dog I've ever met! That bigger picture above is her trying to convince me to give her my burger after she'd finished hers. She's about 2 or 3 weeks from having her puppies. We verified her great health with the vet on Monday morning. We got an x-ray of her and counted little teeny spines- the doc thinks there are 6, the tech thinks there are 9, I'm being neutral and think I saw 8.

All I know is that the house is about to get VERY crowded!!!!

We suspect that the baby daddy is a young rotweiller with whom she was kept in a garage for a few months after their owner abandonded them. (You should have seen her stare at the rotweiller who walked into Pet Quarters!) Between this beautiful girl (with her perfect white coat and face that looks like she's wearing eye liner and lipstick) and that handsome boy, these pups are bound to be wonderful!!! Get those applications in!!

Diamond, herself, already has a home to go to when she's weaned the pups and been spayed. Sorry....
