| UPDATE 8/31/10 - Just a quick update on Oscar...
We have been a happy family for just over a year now. Unfortunately, Oscar's terrible cough comes from a cancerous tumor that has grown on his heart. He is on various medications and is feeling well. He is just as playful and loving as ever. Our goal now is to give him as comfortable and happy a life as possible for as long as possible. He continues to bring joy to our lives and to the life of his fur-sister, and we are forever thankful for having him as part of our family! Thank you SCBR! UPDATE 4/10/10 - Oscar's ultra sound results show that he has a cancerous mass on his heart. This mass ocludes his airway which is what causes his terrible cough. We haven't told him that he has cancer, so other than the cough, he does not seem to realize anything is wrong. He continues to run and play with his fur sister, sleeps on the couch or our bed (naughty boy!), and maintains his regular sleep, play, eat, poop schedule. So, until his quality of life shows severe signs of suffering, we are going to continue his meds and love him a whole big lot!! Our goal is to give him the very best life we can for as long as we can. Prayers and/or other forms of positive-ity=ness are welcome. Thanks! UPDATE 2/16/10 - Oscar is the best snuggle-bug in the world!! He always makes sure my lap is kept warm. He really enjoys the snow, and LOVES going for rides. He is the official co-pilot whenever Dad gets a call for work. All he needs is a little hard hat. On the health front, Oscar has his share of troubles. It seems what his foster family's vet thought was kennel cough has turned out to be chronic bronchitis. He also has a heart murmur and has a mass on the base of his heart. We are currently awaiting results of an MRI to find out more about this "mass". Poor Oscar just coughs and coughs. He is on a regiment of meds which help some. None of his health problems have bothered his disposition. He is happy, playful, and loving...just like always. He and his fur sister romp, frolick, and run around like a couple of puppies. Their favorite game is tug, and they take turns winning so they can chase each other. Overall, life here for our boy is good. We are just hoping for good news from the vet later this week. Send out all the good vibes!! UPDATE 9/24/09 - Well everyone is back to school and the Boxers are running the house again. Just as it should be. Oscar is a very smart boy, he knows to bring back the ball and "leave it" so we can throw it for him again. His fur sister just runs away with it. That's OK though, because then the two of them can play chase instead. Oscar is a great watch dog. He barks at EVERYTHING!! The mail man actually asked if we got a dog! (We've had Boxers for over ten years!) Anyway, the two Boxers have fun playing tug, chase, "get the kitty" (a favorite), and trying to get the treat out of their Kong balls. They keep the house in a steady supply of muddy footprints, fur, and drool. The perfect home. We all get plenty of love, snuggles, and belly rubs. There is never a dull moment with the energy, silliness, and love a Boxer brings! UPDATE 7/28/09 - It's only been two months since we adopted Oscar?!? I can't believe it. It seems like he has been part of our family forever. He is the biggest love bug I have ever met. He just lays on the couch next to me and wraps his front paws around my legs so he can settle in closer for snuggle time. He and his fur sister, Rory, have discovered that when mom goes out to run errands or stop in at work, they can sleep on the grown-ups bed! This doesn't make Dad too happy, so Mom has been shutting the door. The nerve! That's ok though, because the Boxers just take up residence on the couch. (Besides, with the shades up, we can see out and bark at all the fun outside...squirrels, people, birds, the wind, UFOs, whatever!) Oscar completed his obedience training with flying colors. His trainer said he has obviously been through training before. He is such a good boy! Mom bought both boxers Gentle Leaders and now our walks are so much more fun for everyone (well, ok, for Mom). Sunday's are Boxer Day. (We get to go for a ride to the park where we can run, run, run! Mom and Dad read the paper while we play and when they call us or honk the horn, all we have to do is run to the Jeep and we get DONUTS!! People aren't too smart...a bite of donut just for coming when they call? Silly!)All in all, I think Oscar has settled in wonderfully, and I think he would agree that this Second Chance was the best one ever!! UPDATE 6/26/09 - Oscar has been with us for a whole month. It's hard to believe. He is so much part of the family. He is a tremendous snuggle bug and loves to cuddle up on my lap when I am sitting on the couch. However, his 80 lb fur sister likes to do the same, so we have to do some couch shuffling sometimes for the "good" seat. We will begin our training soon now that Mommy is out of work for the summer. We have been picking up some bad habits such as counter surfing and begging as well as two on one (dogs vs. cat) races. All in good fun, but with two boxers getting crazy Mommy has to lay down the law sometimes! Anyway, everyone seems to have settled into their places in the pack. Oscar loves our trips up to Becket to enjoy the land we have. He likes hiking and we will soon see how he does with the water when we head down to the lake. Can't wait! We will write again soon. Oscar's family UPDATE 6/15/09 - Wow!! Oscar is a great dog!! He fits into our home so wonderfully. He has made best friends with his boxer sister, and is Daddy's new good boy. He has decided that when the couch gets too crowded he should be allowed to sleep on our bed. This caused a bit of a show-down with Daddy, but putting a doggie-friendly blanket at the end of the bed made everyone happy. Oscar enjoys his walks and is better on the leash then his sister, Rory. This does not mean he won't be going to school soon. In fact, I may take them both as Rory could really use a refresher herself (she's a drop-out!). With summer vacation just ahead we are looking forward to more walks, playing in the sprinkler, and some great trips up to Becket. Everyone here is as happy as a Boxer family can be and are eternally grateful to SCBR for our newest addition! 5/24/09 - Oscar went to his forever home today!! 5/9/09 - Oscar has been with me since February. He is a great dog. He is just getting over that terrible cough. He has not coughed in Two days. Hooray! I am still giving medication for the next week to make sure it does not come back. He must of caught it at the shelter but, my other dogs did not get it.Anyways, Oscar is lovable and fun. He loves to chase the ball and bring it back. He runs in the back yard with my other two boxers and he does not try to leave the yard (like my boy does). He is great with kids. I am now taking care of a 1.5 year old after daycare and he is so gentle with this little boy. He has not had any accidents in the home and he is always happy to see me. Did I mention that he loves to ride in the car. He jumps right in with no problem. He eats well with my other dogs now. He can get a little pushy but, I correct him and he goes back to his bowl. My dogs will just let him do anything to them. I have not seen any aggression from him to people or my dogs. He is a great catch. I hope he finds his forever home. 3/3/09 - Ok This boy just came home from his Neuter. Yeah! We do not need any more dogs running around this economy right now. Anyways, He is doing great. I stayed while they sedated him and he came through with flying colors. He is a great catch. He is very well trained in the leash area. He does not pull and walks along great. He also loves to ride in the car. I have no problem he jumps right in. Only problem is that he is not crate trained. He hates it so, I do not put him in it. He has not chewed anything in the home so he out of that stage. He is now resting in my daughter's room. My other boxers were harassing him so he is resting quietly. I do not know why anyone would let this wonderful boy loose. 2/14/09 - Oscar is feeling so much better today. He is barely coughing at all Thank God for miracles. His Manly instinct is coming out though. He will be getting that taking care of the first week of March though. He and my other dogs have been outside most of the day it has been pretty mild here. He does great on a leash. I do not understand why no one looked for him. He eats though by himself in the morning because he likes to still bully and dish surf. Other wise he is doing great. He will make some one a good companion. 2/10/09 - Oscar has been with our family for about a week now. He is loving and has a great personality. Everyone loves him. He gets along with my other two boxers. He even has won the heart of my Dad who does not like dogs. He sleeps with my daughter at the end of the bed or on the floor with his blanket. He is completely house broken. He has not had an accident yet. He is not fixed but, will be next month. He has not sprayed in the home at all which surprised me. He does have some down falls (doesn't everyone). He has worms right now but, has all the medications to go with it. That is just a little minor problem that goes away. He is coughing right now but (Kennel cough), getting better everyday. He is even gaining weight now. He does have a little issue with the other dogs when eating (only morning). This could be due to not having the proper food for a while. He is not aggressive with people while eating just my other dogs. He will growl and push them away from their food. The children and I can walk around him in the morning and he does not make a peep. My other dogs are great though. They just walk away and wait until he is done then they return and eat their breakfast. During other times he eats well with them. I guess he does not like mornings. Other wise in these minor things he is a great catch for my first foster. 2/5/09 - Oscar did good at the vet today. He is 58 lbs now and he is heartworm negative. He does have whip and hook worms. I got meds for the next month for that. I will schedule his neuter next week. He is about 2 yrs old. He does have some worn teeth due to biting the cage or other hard things but, not too bad. 2/3/09 - I got my first foster today. I am so excited. He seems really good with my other dogs. Tried a bath but, he did not go for it so, I will let him settle down and try again in a day or two when he gets to know me better. He loves the fenced in yard ran out there for about an 1/2 hour. Will let you know more tomorrow. |
