| UPDATE 6/16/10 - I'd say Marvin's mellowed out about .25% since I adopted him 6 months ago. That's okay, he can be crazy marvin. I think he gets even more cute with every day - and my day would go by very slowly I'm sure with out him getting into something he's not supposed to just to get my attention every 15 minutes. He's learned how to help me unload the grocery bags but hasn't learned to not sneak away with the food. This morning he unrolled the entire roll of TP then ran into my closet and pulled a shirt out of the clothes basket and ran down the stairs into the backyard so I could chase him. His routine was kind of disturbed this week while Lucy is here for a bit until she can make her way to her foster home. He likes her, but she since doesn't like him. He's taking it well enough but he really wants her to come out and play. He pushes a toy towards her crate and she just growls at him. Then he's over it til next time. I have to keep him and sasha in their crates much more than normal
- so when he finally gets sprung, he is absolutely bananas. He's just such a goof ball and so good natured. We went up to my mom's house where he usually loves to play with boxer cousin Apollo but this time he sat on my marvin and wouldn't let him up. Creep. I could tell Marvin was a bit taken back by that - he avoided him until the next day but in true marvin fashion, he got over it and was back to running circles around Apollo and jumping side ways to escape the big bully. One day I have to get video of that. UPDATE 3/13/10 - Marvin- the master manipulator...I was all set to say I finally figured out the right combination of what, when and how to feed skinny man marvin but he had me fooled. He's too smart for his own good I say - I think he took a look at the calendar and said, Ok, its been a few weeks - time to switch things up again and make mom slightly crazy. I thought my combination of a yummy, stinky mushy can food AND the trick of splitting his dry into two feeder bowls [so that none of the bottom kibble is too wet or too dry] was finally working. Well It was, til marvin decided last week that he no longer prefers this way of eating. Ugh, back to square one... Today marvin pulled a new manipulation trick out of his bag. I know he understands "go for a walk" but when he thinks I'm not paying attention to his signals, he finds a way to make dopey mom get a clue. He learned to sit on the end of the couch staring at his leash an whining so I would really know he's bored. Got it, thanks marv. He loves being outside, never cared about the rain or snow which makes me thankful since I read all the stories of the crazy umbrella ladies and their water phobic boxers - that lasted until today. Never thought I would have to experience that, but I guess marvin wanted to see me get my hoodie and shoes on to brave the rain with him but still wasn't enough. Got the umbrella, that wasn't it. Grabbed the leash and walked him in the rain through my backyard. I have a sneaking suspicion that he hasn't developed an overnight weather phobia but is pouting for not being to go for a walk in this weather and is making me pay for the rain. I guess he thinks I need special help reading his signals but I really don't. Like with the potty bells, I know when he hits them just to go out and play so tell him no and ignore him and give him a toy instead. He goes back and hits them harder and harder then stands in the kitchen looking at me to see if I got it yet. There has been days when he nudges them so hard, he knocks them off the door knob, or does the multiple, sequential jingle like a cranky, impatient little man. Now that he has graduated from his basic obedience class, I really may look into getting him into the agility class at some point. He would do fantastic with that crafty little brain... UPDATE 2/10/10 - Hope this update doesn't get lost like his first one - I look like a slacker... I gave marvin a new nickname today - usually I call him crazy marvin [crazy legs, crazy lips, crazy noises] but today I found out he's crazy, lazy marvin. You would think with his insanely long legs he would go out in the yard and brave the snow to pee. Nope. Only where its cleared but meanwhile short little sasha is in the snow up to her tail. He really does likes the snow and was running all over the place to play with his basketball but I guess he decided to not pee on my patio would exert to much of his play energy. He was just out again running from end to end and it looked like he dove into the snow and rode it like a wave. what a goof. It seems like he's figured out that he's found a home now and isn't going anywhere again - he's starting to listen more and is getting a little bit more settled every day. He's doing well in his obedience training. He's still being picky with his food so I had to resort back to can food which I didn't want to do but the home made food I was giving them was fine but he was picking it out and only eating that. He needs the sticky mushy can to stick to his dry or he wont eat it. Picky, picky, picky... UPDATE 1/17/10 - Not sure if the first update I posted on jan 10 went through - didn't recieve the confirmation email like I have in the past. I can't remember what I said so in a nutshell, all is going well with marvin. sasha is tolerating his puppy antics but I have a feeling she secretely likes it. he has obedience training starting in january and I'm sure sasha will be extremely pleased if we can teach him to stop pestering her while she is trying to hide in her crate. Ha! fat chance of that happening. 12/12/09 - Marvin has been adopted! 12/7/09 - I took Mushy Marvin to the vet tonight to get his heartworm/erlicchia/lyme test, and he's clean as a whistle. He's been here for three days and has wiggled his way into our hearts. He is not a fan of the crate, not one bit. He will settle down after a bit of sound that sound like deep moans... "HMMMMMM". He waits patiently in the morning to be let out and will go outside to take care of business without any prompting or reminding. He has not had one accident or even a close call since he's been here, and while I've tried to get him to ring the bells that my dogs use, he more often will just stand at the door, so as long as you are aware of what he is doing and where he is, there should be no problem. He eats nicely (one of my guys is a monster and scoops his food all over the place), He has learned (is learning) to sit and wait for me to allow him to eat. He is a bit clingy, and likes to know where someone is. He quickly attached himself to the 13 year old teenager here when she came home and cozied himself on the floor with her. He's a little crazy when he comes in from outside, and has grabbed toys and flung them around while spinning his body in the air. While comical, he does need to learn to control that and we will work on it while he is here. I do have to remind myself that he's a puppy since he is so tall, and that behavior... quite honestly, is expected. He is a mush, a love and a keeper. 12/5/09 - Marvin arrived this morning all legs and wiggles. He is young, approximately 10 months from what the shelter told me. Here is his story – “ Hi …… I was found as a stray by a gentleman who wanted to keep me – he named me Rocky. He took me home, took me to the vet for a health check and rabies shot, and then tried to convince his Missus to let me stay – she wouldn’t (sniffle, sniffle), so off to the shelter I went. The shelter workers called me Prince, cause I am just that… a Prince. They tested me for food aggression – negative; dog aggression – negative; I went through their cat room and was apparently okay – but they are unsure; they had me updated on the rest of my shots and had me neutered and now I’m ready to go. Just need a heartworm test, I am told. I visited with Santa on the way to my new foster home and gave him my wish for Christmas…. Wanna guess what that is? (Yeah - a frozen peanut butter Kong would be nice too!) " Marvin has met my two resident boxers and all is fine. He is young and skinny and needs some filling out. It’s raining so NO ONE wanted to go outside to run or explore. My camera batteries died, so I will try to get some better pictures of him tonight or tomorrow. He is absolutely gorgeous. His hind legs have white socks up to the ankle and he is a deep mahogany. I will not be offended if no one calls for this boy - he can stay as long as he wants to. Other than some whining in the crate (which sounded like loud HMMMM’s ) he hasn’t made much noise – but he’s tired. We decided on Marvin because he wasn’t responding to Prince. We went through a bunch of names and thought of Mahvelous Marvin Hagler… I called, he came “a runnin”.. Guess he liked the sound of it. Marvin it is.! |
