UPDATE 9/5/09 - So.... Our Kia has been with us now for almost 6 months!!  Hard to believe... it has just flown right by.
She and Nitro are pals (most of the time) and they have a routine in the morning where they get their morning bones (while I get my first cup of coffee), then they play outside until David comes home from work, then they come in and have breakfast, and then they play ball or tug in the house, and then Nitro still wants to play... BUT KIA says it's time to settle down, and she uses her paws to knock Nitro down and then she licks his face clean until he calms down.  Every morning!  It's too funny to watch.
She LOVES chasing the ball in the front yard.  She'll haul off at lightening speed 5, maybe 6 times and then finally drops the ball and lays down.  All the while, Nitro just looks at her running and thinks to himself, what's all that excitement about... I'm just gonna watch, over here, outta the way.
We were told when we got Kia that it might not be a good idea to have her live with the cat (Ivan the Terrible).  The two of them do (on occasion) still try to stare each other down, and will challenge each other in close proximity... but for the most part, they can pass each other throughout the house without much fanfare.  Every now and again, Kia will try to just get a taste of kitty's orange fluffy tail as he passes by... "it's just a taste... not really a bite", she says!  Just last week though, I found both dogs and one Ivan the Terrible sleeping on the same couch at the same time!!!  So, there's a picture for the record  :)
She is so very sweet (most of the time).  She does still, once in a while, try to rear her Alpha head, and when she does, she's reminded that she's near the top... but not AT the top of the food chain here.  Nitro, though, is her second in command... but he doesn't really seem to mind.  And then, she softly hops up onto the couch to lay beside me on on my lap (she fits better than Nitro does!), and she just leans her head back and gives me a look that reminds me that she's just a little girl looking for a little affection (alpha or not).  I can't help but scratch her sweet spots and kiss her face!
I never once regret having taken this lovely senior into our home!!  Never ONCE!  I hope she still has a good long time to spend with us... and even still, no matter what, she's getting quality time here with us... and we with her  :)

UPDATE 6/14/09 - What a great dog Kia is!  We are so blessed to have her here with us, fitting right in like she's been here all along!
The only time she clearly shows her dominance now is with the raw-hide bones that she and Nitro can chew on outside.... they apparently ALL belong to Kia!  She could have 2 of them in possesion and if Nitro goes for the 3rd somewhere else on the lawn, she'll leave the 2 she has to go snatch the one Nitro wants right out of his mouth!  We're still working on her sharing skills  :)
Otherwise, she's been very loving, attentive, and sweet to everyone in the family.  She still pulls on the leash, so she still has to wear her gentle leader (AKC version with fleece over the nose)... reluctantly.  She stays in the yard now and doesn't try to cross the invisible fencing, so there have been many times when she's been let out without the collar on, and she stays in the yard anyway.  Very nice  :)
She still has more energy than Nitro and will chase and return a ball to us long before he even thinks about running for it.  She still so fast and so strong, it's just awesome to see her run!
I could have a dozen dogs like Kia.... wish I had the room for all of them!

3/14/09 - Kia has been adopted!

2/20/09 - From Kia: You would never believe where I just was! I got to ride in a car and sniff all over and then I met this lady who pet me but poked a little at me too. he had this sharp needle thing, but she was really quick about it, so I suffered through and let her do her thing. I heard her talking to my foster auntie about reasons why I drink so much. The doctor lady said that my tests were mostly normal and I don't have anything wrong with me like diabetes or kidney problems. I could have told her that... I mean... DUH... look at me! I'm beautiful! Age is just a number and I hardly act mine! Now I've proven I'm completely healthy for my age too! I just like to slurp water. Foster Auntie just got all freaky last night because I wanted to sleep more than I wanted to play. Maybe I'm just enjoying the fact that
my kids have all gone off on their own to their own homes. My last hanger-on Diesel (sheesh, I thought that boy would never leave) got adopted by this nice couple last week. I really liked his new mom and tried to convince her to run away with me, but that's ok. I love being here with this puppy I like to run ragged and a great big bed to stretch out on.

Check out these videos of me!!! In this first one, I'm proving that even a puppy can't keep up with me!

In this one (
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKS5vcdqHZM) my boy and I are playing tag with the puppy. I know it looks like I'm hanging back, but don't let that fool you. If those knuckleheads want to go bound through the snow and get all wet, fine for them. I'm a lady and will wait until they come back before I pounce. The best shot of me is at the very end. Ain't I purty? Doncha want to take me home with you?

2/6/09 - Diesel is earning the right to be around the house out of the crate. He likes to walk around with his leash in his mouth. Every now and then he thrashes it and smacks himself in the head with it. Must be a dog thing... I looked out the window yesterday after the dogs had all gone out the dog door and saw this
going on

Momma obviously wanted him on a "short leash"!

2/5/09 - Every now and then a dog comes to the house that needs to speak for him or herself. Meet Kia.
Hello everyone. I'm Kia. I'm a boxer, a mother, a player, a referee, and a princess. I like long naps on the couch, a good long chase and wrestle with a puppy, and a really nice chew toy. I had my last litter of pups this past summer when I was turning 8. I'm a little tired. I had a little surgery Monday and now I can relax. Ahhhhhhhhh. This lady I live with loves when I snuggle with her on the couch and last night I even got to sleep on the bed. I haven't gotten to do that much in the past. It made me so happy, I didn't even snore! There is this puppy that lives here and he always wants to wrestle! Bring it on! Usually he quits before I do! Bah! Kids today! Fine with me. I have my favorite chew toy. I feel like I'm a kid again! This lady here says she can't believe I'm 8 because I have so much energy and like to play. I am staying here with one of my sons. He's 4 and, between you and me, its time that he cut the cord and got a place of his own. Wouldn't want the lady dogs thinking he's a big geek, right??
Having been a mother to so many, I like things the way I like them. I'm not bossy about it, (unless it comes to my boy... but he really needs to get a clue, anyway) but I'll let you know when I'm not happy about something. I really don't like when the lady shuts me in the bedroom and I'm beginning to outsmart her when she tries to coax me in there so she can go to work. Ha! She may have thumbs, but I'm a pretty smart cookie too! I get a little growly when she tries to take my ball away, but I really don't mean it. We both chuckle and she throws it again for me.
The only thing I really don't like is being put in a cage. They had to put me in a pen at the doctor's office and I let my teeth let them know how displeased I was to be treated that way. Oopsie. Now they know not to put me in one, so my point was made.
I'm looking for a new place to live and a new family to actually call my own. It is beneath me to live with walking hairballs... um... cats, and I won't do it. I really like kids, but having had so many, I kinda just ignore them. What I really like is a lap to cuddle with. Finally someone my very own. Someone to sit and stroke my head. Someone to let me have doggie dreams and giggle while I run in my sleep. Someone who will let me take naps (without kids always burrowing at my belly looking to nurse, argh!) and then throw a ball for me to fetch. Its so close I can almost taste it!

2/2/09 - Momma Kia finally let me take some pictures on the sly while she played outside. I can't help but call her Momma- you can obviously see why. The only maternal instincts I've seen, however, are when she doesn't let Diesel beat up the puppy so much that SHE can't play with him. Oh, that and when she STRICTLY scolds her son.
She's doing quite well for a girl who had only one home for 8 1/2 years. She's earned house privileges and has FINALLY tired of playing with the puppy. (It only took an hours or so.)

1/31/09 - Hey everyone! I want you to welcome Kia and her Son, Diesel. They came to me from an owner that could not keep them. Thanks for everyone who helped get them here.
Kia is 8 years old and just had her last litter of puppies some time this year. Diesel is her son and he is 4. While I don't know much about them yet, I DO know that Momma rules the roost. It is her way or the highway. Right now Diesel is a little anxious when she isn't around.
Diesel is a ham and sat pretty for pictures when all he wanted to do was get out of the closed room and play with the puppy. Momma K is camera shy, so these two pics are the best I could do- unless you want a bunch of the back of her head! lol I'll do a real update for the website as I get to know them. I just heard a big sighhhhhhhh come from the other room, so maybe our day is finally done!
