UPDATE 9/26/09 - Gunny has really come along very well just since the past month.   He is quite bonded to Jonnie and he’ll accept me more and more.   He even plays with me on occasion so I know that we’ll be good in due time.
We’ve been working with his confidence and that seems to bring everything else together for him.  The more he becomes comfortable with his place in the world, the more relaxed he gets and willing to enjoy his surroundings.
Gunny Loves to ride.  Last week I moved the car and he ran over as though I was forgetting him.  That was a big moment for me, remembering how he would not go near one in the beginning.  He’ll even hang around the car if we leave one of the doors open.  He is also fond of the golf cart.  We drive over near him and he jumps right in.  It’s comical how he leans out and looks out from the side so he can stick his head out in the breeze.  It’s the same way in the car; he rides with his head out the window.
Recently, Gunny has been wanting to be where we are.  Before, he would either sack out on the couch or sleep in his pen.  Now he will come into which ever room we are in without us calling to him.  It’s such a great feeling knowing he has come this far that he wants to be part of the family.
We take him out without a leash now (only on the property and in the river.) and he stays with us…  Well, with Jonnie anyway; he’ll occasionally run back to the house if I look at him wrong.   We took him to my dad’s camp recently but Jonnie had to put the leash on him after something upset him and he headed up the road.  I think he figured it was time to go home!
We’ve talked with a friend with a Bull Mastiff and Gunny’s personality traits fit his more than a Boxer’s.  Although we may never see the “bouncy boxer” greeting from Gunny, we appreciate his quiet demeanor and laid back personality.   It fits very well with our lifestyle.  All in all, we are very pleased and encouraged that the poor sad sack is finally becoming a happy dog.  The big moment we are still waiting for is when one of us comes home and he shows real emotion.  Still no wiggles, but judging by the way he acts, we now know that he is happiest when we’re all together at home.

UPDATE 7/4/09 - Gunny is making slow but positive progress with people. We've taken him to a few family parties and after a little bit he interacts with everyone quite well.
He’s started obedience but even that is slow because we haven’t found anything that really works as a reward.
He has been going to day care and that really works for him   I’ve seen a transformation when he is among his friends that is fun to watch.  He turns into a wiggle butt puppy that we don’t see otherwise.
His afternoon walks with Mom are his favorite.  He runs, jumps, and plays in the field or splashes around in the river.   It’s good to see the big boy come out of his shell.

04/11/09   Gunny left this morning for his forever home!  Even though he was a bit stressed and was hunkering down I was very proud of him.  When he first came into rescue with us we would have had to literally drag him to the car and pick him up to get him in.  It was wonderful to see him respond with gentle encouragement to his new family.  A huge thank you to his new mom & dad for giving this big love a new home!  We look forward to the updates!

3/06/09
- Just a quick update on our Gunny boy.  Gunny is really starting to come out of his shell.  He loves playing with our boxer Roxy and now struts out the door to go into the yard.  He is less hand shy with us and enjoys a good rubdown.  He even let me trim his claws with the pedi-paws without a fuss!  Gunny continues to act a bit nervous when things get loud in the house with our daughters running and playing, but he just goes into his crate and watches from there.  He is very gentle with both of my young daughters and enjoys when they bring him toys and treats when trying to coax him into joining them.  Gunny is most likely to hang out with the whole family as things are winding down...he definitely enjoys playing the role of couch potato!  Gunny is just one big and cuddly boy.  With a bit of patience and lots of love he will be an incredible addition to any family!  More to come after his vet visit!

2/28/09 - Gunny is a BIG guy who is really a bit shy and unsure of himself and his place in the world.  He has been with us for nearly a week now and every day more of his personality is coming through.  Gunny is a beautiful brindle with some of his stripes in a "chevron" so that is how he received his name from us!
He is still in "puppy-mode" with chewing and needs LOTS of toys to keep him distracted from other interesting items in the house like kids toys or shoes!  A gentle "No" is enough of a reminder for this boy to stop in his tracks.  Gunny is a bit of a wall-flower in the group, for the time being, and mostly enjoys sitting on one of the dog beds with a bone and watching the activities of everyone else in the house.  Gunny still needs to be neutered which I hope will be happening in the next week or two.  Make sure to look for his update!

2/22/09 - Gunny arrived today from a high kill shelter in the South.  Updates soon!
