| UPDATE 8/11/09 - Buster is keeping us on our toes!! He has been somewhat of a challenge, but we could not be happier to have him. Buster came to us with every bone in his body showing. His ribs, his hip bones...he looked like a little boxer skeleton. We were embarrassed to take him for walks at first because we didn't want people to see him and think that we had done that to him. Now, Buster is up quite a few pounds and his bones are no longer visible. He looks happy and healthy--he's all muscles now!! He also had quite a few injuries when we got him, tons of scars and a few open wounds still healing up. These have all healed nicely and only the scars now serve as evidence of his past life. Buster also came to us with some skin problems. He was horribly itchy and seemed to be constantly bothered by it. After numerous trips to several different vets (we finally found one that we are completely happy with!), Buster was diagnosed with and treated for bacterial dermatitis. That cleared up
a lot of the problem, but as the vet suspected, he is also suffering from pretty severe allergies. He is on steroids now to keep him comfortable, and when the allergy season subsides a bit we will wean him off the steroids so he can get allergy tested and we can figure out how best to deal with the problem. Other than his health issues, Buster is fantastic. He and our 2007 SCBR adoptee, Mia, are best friends and have been since the moment we brought Buster home. They just love each other and are constantly sleeping in boxer piles all over the house. Buster is not quite so great with the cats...we are still separating them at all times because we are pretty sure Buster will kill them if he ever has the chance, based on his past reactions to them. We will continue trying to slowly acclimate them to each other...although we're not sure if they'll ever be able to live together peacefully. Buster is full of energy, he loves nothing more than his daily walks, running around his
yard playing with his toys (the louder and more obnoxious the squeaky toy is, the more he loves it) and bucking around the house excitedly whenever he thinks he might be getting something. At night he finally settles down and snuggles on the couch with the rest of the family, and he always has to be right on someone's lap. He is the definition of a "love bug." Best of all, I think Buster is finally starting to realize that he is home, and he won't have to leave. He seems so settled and comfortable here now. Now that he's had a taste of the good life for a few months, he's becoming quite spoiled and thinks he deserves "things" any time he wants them. He has the most adorable little whine, and he whines while staring up at you and backing up. Its the cutest thing, until he does it for about an hour straight (he is extremely persistent!!) On Sunday we are heading down to a beautiful lake house in the Catskills for a week, and both Mia and Buster are coming with us (actually, we decided on the place for our vacation based on whether the dogs would be allowed!) We can't wait for a week of sun, swimming, and hiking with our babies!! We weren't sure if we had any love left after we adopted Mia a few years ago, but now that we have Buster I think our hearts have both grown another couple of sizes. We couldn't be happier to have this little guy in our home, and we're so glad we can give him the good life he deserves!! 5/22/09 Well, Buster's new family are driving from NY to come and take this much deserving boy back home with them. He will settle in with his boxer-sister Mia (rescue). She is a whopping 80 pounds to his slight 41 pounds. His new owner Matt, thanked me for taking such good care of Buster for him. How sweet. Sounds like the dogs will live the "life of Riley" with ample dog beds, food, exercise, love, furniture to nap on, love, big bed to sleep on with the owners and lots more love. Buster was neutered on 5/20 and the office deemed him to be the sweetest boy they have encountered in some time. He did wonderfully but was a little groggy when I picked him up late in the day. He was confined to his crate to limit mobility, which he hates and my daughter brought down a pillow and blanket to sleep beside him and calm him. He started the night prior with some intestinal problems which continued for about 24 hours. He is back to his alert, cuddly and playful self. The vet believes that Buster had been malnourished as a puppy and has a slight curve to his spine. He is so skinny that honestly I thought it was just the prominence of his bones. For the 4 short weeks that I have had him, my entire family was taken with him. We all find the time to let him sit on our laps and profess our love to and for him. He is a dog that I would like to track and stay in touch with. Thanks for bringing him to us. 5/7/09 - Buster and my other dogs have settled in nicely - it's a boxer love fest here. Buster is so very sweet. He was following me around the house the other day and curled up on the floor to sleep. When you look at him closely, he has a number of scars that surely reflect his treatment and difficult past years. He is so full of love though. My daughter was lying on the couch and he curled up to sleep on her chest - he's small enough to do that. (I'll send that picture in). He has a good appetite and I'm hoping to put a few pounds on him before he's adopted. His food aggression has lessened but he will greedily take a treat from your hands. He's a sound sleeper and loud snorer. We are not crating him any longer - he hated it and let it be known. He's trustworthy loose however, he hasn't gotten into the trash or had any accidents. I think Buster would do great either as the sole dog or with another one. He enables your heart to double in size - you just want to pour everything out to him. He's quite special and a family will be quite lucky to get him 4/29/09 - Buster has been here for 3 days and we are all getting acquainted. He's a peanut of a boy - smallish in size and weight with his ribs showing. Here is what I can share with you about Buster. He loves his peeps - and loves close contact and giving kisses and melts into you when you hug him. His smaller size makes him fit perfectly on your lap. He hasn't had any accidents in the house and let's us know when he needs to go out. He doesn't like being crated - which we will work on - and he barks to let you know it. He has some good understanding of his commands - come, sit, down, and no, but "quiet and no bark" have no meaning to him whie he is crated. Other than that, he has a very sweet disposition and is a calm boy. When we go for our walks, my 11 year old daughter handles him well, but he's strong and pulls. He's a little aggressive over food, but submissive to my other dogs. I have 3 other boxers (1 female and 2 males one of which is dominant). We are still taking it slowly with introductions. We let Buster and my 13 year old male boxer out and about together, but Buster and the dominant male and female haven't been let loose together yet. I really like and enjoy Buster and will write more about him over the next few days. 04/22/09 - Buster has been with us for 4 days and he is really trying hard to settle in. Most of the time Buster is a sweet love bug, but every once in a while something sets him off and he lunges or snaps at his fur sister (never at people). He has a little food aggression and some “attention jealousy” towards her but we are doing our best to teach him that we have plenty of food and love for both dogs. He had some rough months before coming into foster care and he just needs some consistency and reassurance that it is all going to be ok. Because he tenses up and shows a bit of aggression whenever we pass other dogs on the sidewalk or in the park we have decided to hold off any introductions t (well, expect for the dog he is currently sharing the couch with!) This means no fun playing in the park with other dogs for exercise so Buster is learning to be a runner! To be such a peanut of a boy he sure can pull on a leash! But he is getting better with each run and we think he could really grow into a great running buddy. He is completely house broken, knows his basic commands and listens well when asked to perform them. In the few days Buster has been with us we have seen a big change and in no time he is going to be a loving and fun boy ready for his forever family to take him home and show him just how great life can be. Catch a glimpse of Buster playing keep away from Maddie. He is a stealthy one! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FWJ32Ecero 04/19/09 - Buster arrived today and he is quite a sweet boy. Buster was loved so much by his mommy but due to some family hardships she knew the best thing to do for Buster was to find him a new family to love him as much as she does. And let me tell you, it won’t be hard to find a new family for this boy. He is a petite flower (don’t tell him I called him a flower). He is four years old but is small like a puppy. So for all of you who have said to your puppies, “I wish they could always stay this small,” he is your boy! He is of course a little nervous and unsettled right now making him a wee bit spastic, but he seems to know his basic commands and once he settles in he will be a good listener. Buster met our 2 year old boxer girl and all went well. He has not been neutered (yet!) so he is a little transfixed on her “parts” which she isn’t thrilled about, but all in all he is being very well mannered with her. He has been on 2 long walks in the park today and though we didn’t let him meet any new people or dogs he has behaved well and appears to be well socialized. More to come as he settles in and relaxes a bit. |
