| 7/11/09 - Avery is coming back to SCBR this weekend as she could not learn to live with the cat in her new home. This time she will be looking for a kitty-free home. More updates soon from her new foster home. 5/31/09 - Miss Avery has made her way to NH to her new forever home! 5/13/09 - Avery had all of her staples removed at the vets and she is doing GREAT! I know that she is a sweetie pie, but even I was astounded at how well-behaved she was during the staple removal--it cannot have been too comfortable, and she just sat there like she was having a manicure! To take out the spay staples, we just leaned her back against me with her front legs up (like she was begging), and she didn't move a muscle! Even though I know they are there, I can barely see the scars on her foreleg or belly. And it looks like the one by her shoulder will blend in when her hair grows back! Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, and I think Avery is GORGEOUS! 5/6/09 - Avery is nearly ready to have her surgery staples removed. She is healing up nicely and has been the perfect invalid guest. Her scar on her foreleg is likely to be tiny--she hasn't bothered it at all. And her spay scar looks like it will also be negligible. But her Mast Cell removal scar will always be noticeable. Let's think of it as a reminder of her "second chance" at a well-deserved life with a loving forever family. Are YOU her new forever family? 4/28/09 - Avery went in for her spay and lumpectomy today, and is back home sleeping soundly. It took a lot out of her in more ways than one! Avery did have a large uterus, suggesting that she spent many of her years as a breeding female who had many litters. That also explains why her housebreaking is not 100 % yet--she was probably kenneled most if not all of her life before her second chance. Dr. Doug commented that the lump by her shoulder looked like it was probably mast cell, which Boxers are prone to. He also felt that they got a good margin and that she should be OK. He also took off a few skin tags while she was under, and trimmed her toenails. Dr. Doug also spoke to her great personality--they LOVE Boxers at my vet's office, but she IS a real sweetie! We'll be careful to not let her get too rambunctious while her wounds are healing--and then Avery will be ready for her new home! 4/18/09 - Avery had a shower today--she was a little dirty and a little smelly--and now she is soft and sweet. Actually, she was always sweet, but now she smells sweet, too! She was perfectly behaved in the shower, although she needed a little coaxing to come in. Not a surprise since she is so well behaved in every other way. She and Rocky and I have had some lovely strolls around the neighborhood. She is an absolute doll on the leash--not the tiniest bit of pulling. And she seems to enjoy the opportunity for a little exercise, too. We've met a few people on our walks and she is happy to meet everyone, but is especially drawn to children. 4/9/09 - Avery has been the perfect hostess here at the Riverview Boxer-Hostel since last weekend when Rocky arrived. She started wagging her tail-nub as soon as he came in, and made it quite clear that she was willing to be friends. So the next day we let them meet face to face (and face to butt!) and they HAVE been friends ever since! People keep noticing that Avery is slimming down (or trimming up) a little bit. I think that she enjoys the opportunity to get some exercise. I KNOW she enjoys our leash walks--and so do I because she doesn't pull at all! Today we walked into town (so I could pick up a prescription) and she waited patiently right outside the pharmacy door for me--not a peep out of her. She even got to say hello to a gentleman who was also picking up a prescription. It won't be too much longer before she can go in for her spay--and lump removal--and then Avery will be ready to go "home." 3/11/09 - Well, little Miss Avery will not be going in for her spay as planned--in fact it's indefinitely postponed! Avery started her heat cycle about the time she came into rescue, so on Friday, she started the second phase of her heat--the bleeding that leads up the to the-could-get- pregnant time! So it at least another month before the vet will consider doing the spay surgery as it much more dangerous for the dog when their uterus is enlarged. Other that that, she is doing fine. She and Ceasar could not get along better. She crates easily but prefers to sleep in bed with me when I let her. Avery is not a big fan of dog beds--she prefers the human type and the loveseat, which I guess are more comfortable. Of course if the humans are not near a couch or bed she thinks the floor is just fine, too. We think that she is slimming down a little bit (I wish I was!) due to the exercise she is getting with Ceasar. Unfortunately we won't be doing any neighborhood strolls so we don't spread her scent around any more that it wafts through the air. Maybe I'll be lucky and it will rain every day until the danger period is over so no potential suitors notice she is "ready and waiting!" She is waiting, though she's not yet ready for her forever home! 3/6/09 - The Riverview is delighted to report that Avery is now up to date on her shots and is heartworm, erlichia and Lyme free. Her urinary tract infection is also cleared up. Hooray! And it is with no surprise that I report that everyone at my Boxer-loving vet's office thought she was wonderful (if a tad overweight). She was SO good on the table even when she got two shots, blood drawn, her ears looked at, her teeth examined, and her belly shaved! The belly shaving was to make the search for her spay scar easier. Unfortunately, no evidence of a spay was found so she is scheduled to go in on Thursday to have that done. And while she is under anesthesia, we'll have those bumps and lumps taken off. The vet determined that her missing front teeth are just hiding--under her overgrown gums! Boxers are prone to gingival hyperplasia--or overgrown gums--and she is a Boxer! She is a doll, and no one can imagine what could have happened so that she ended up an unclaimed stray...But now she is safe with SCBR until she finds the forever home that is just right. 2/26/09 - Avery has settled into life at the Riverview perfectly. She and Ceasar are getting along like Forrest Gump's "peas and carrots". It took her a few days to convince him that she was sweet and gentle, but now they are able to be loose together in the house like we are one big family--the way I like it to be. (They are each lying at my feet while I type and read my emails here in the family room.) Avery has a few more days of antibiotic for her urinary tract infection, but other than the pills there is no evidence of a problem--she is able to hold her urine all day while I am work, and all night while we are asleep. Avery learned her first night how to jump into our bed. And the past few nights I have been letting her sleep in bed with me for part of the night, and in her crate for the remainder of it. She goes into her crate without any fuss, and makes no noise while she is in it. I can't say that I have noticed a single bad habit. And I even learned that she is just fine on a leash. I took her and Ceasar for a nice long walk last evening (now that the days are a little longer it is not dark when I get home from work!) And they were WONDERFUL! No pulling at all. We had one person stop their car to compliment me (them) on how gorgeous they were. I agreed--plain fawn with a black mask is my favorite Boxer coloring. And a well-mannered middle aged Boxer is my favorite Boxer age! (Avery may technically be a senior, but she is young at heart!) 2/21/09 - Avery has arrived at the Riverview in Kennebunk. She had a short ride down from Bath and she was a VERY good girl in the car. She even acted as my car guardian while I whipped into the local pharmacy to pick up a prescription. Avery has given me lots of tail wagging (I can call it a tail because its a bit too long for a nub!). She wagged her tail at Ceasar--but unfortunately he isn't ready to wag his at her yet. So we're doing the crate or baby-gate separation rotation while everybody gets used to each other safely. (Right now she is lying next to me in the family room as I type, and Ceasar is hanging out with Richard in the kitchen while he cooks.) Avery checked out the back yard and didn't mind the snow! She bounded up and down the stairs like a much younger dog (and a much thinner one for that matter...) I can tell we're going to enjoy having her visit! 2/11/09 - We got Avery on Sunday night. She was a stray to one of our favorite shelters. She is very sweet and mellow. She has to be on your heals at all times. I took her to the vet yesterday and the vet said that she has an ear infection, Urinary Tract infection and tumors. We are giving her medication for the UTI and ear infections. She also does not have any front teeth. Avery loves to sit on the couch by your side and greeting you at the door. I haven't heard her use her voice yet though. She has a very loving personality. We will give everyone an update when we learn more about this sweet girl. |
