5/19/09 - Ava went to her new home today!

5/6/09
- Ava has got to be the sweetest Boxer-Girl that I've ever met!  What a personality!  As a rule, she will not solicit attention from you but when you give it, she just glues herself to you like she's never been petted or loved before!  She certainly doesn't ask for much but it's my hope that she goes to a kind and loving family that will shower her with the attention and love that she so deserves!  She's fine with small children - She sniffed my 2-year-old niece to make sure she wasn't hiding any food, then didn't really pay much attention to her.  Ava is great in the house when left alone but will also go into the crate with minimal objections.  She does fine once in the crate but would definitely prefer not to be in there...LOL!!!  Ava was very skinny when she came to me but has slowly put on some weight and her ribs are not as noticeable as they were three weeks ago.  She has a very healthy appetite, for sure!  Ava is completely house trained but definitely takes her time doing her business when she's on a leash.  She is used to having a fenced-in yard and doesn't seem to understand why we need to "hurry" to get our business done!

Ava has displayed a small amount of leash aggression when introduced to other dogs.  The "experts" tell me that it's me because I tense up on the leash and pull her close to me when there is an oncoming dog.  She obviously senses my fear and feels the need to protect me.  We have been working on this for days now and have seen much improvement.  We go to a dog park where most of the other dogs are loose and playing together.  For the most part, she bows down, wiggling away, wishing that I would turn her loose to play with the pups.  At home, she gets along fine with my 8-year-old male Boxer.  With some obedience training and a secure owner, Ava will be just fine.

Ava had surgery for a mammary tumor right before she came to me.  Lab results showed some pre-cancerous cells but clean margins were obtained and the entire tumor was removed.  The vet from the shelter has advised that she be monitored periodically in the future.  Ava was bred three times by her previous owner but was spayed at the same time that her mammary tumor was removed.  She is up-to-date on shots and now ready to go to her forever home.  Ava is as low-maintenance as a girl can be!  She doesn't ask for anything but is perfectly content to velcro herself to your side while you rub her belly!  She has an extremely sweet and gentle personality and is awaiting her forever home as patiently as a wiggly girl possibly could!

4/21/09 - This little girl isn't answering to Deevah, so we're going to call her something prettier- AVA... and what do you know?? She's coming when called! She must like it too.

- Deevah is here and what a complete and total love bug she is!  Considering all that this poor little girl has been through this week, she is doing just fine!  She has met my Boxer-Boy Mickey on leashes and we are still a little guarded as she growled a bit after meeting him and tried to mount him once.  I'm guessing that she was the alpha dog in her previous family but she is learning quickly that I'm the boss in this house...LOL!!!  She took some time to check things out, then found a comfy spot on the dog bed where should could relax after her long day.  I tried her in the crate once but she definitely was not happy about it.  I have the next few days off and will be working with her on short stays in the crate while I'm away.  She's a tiny girl and a bit on the skinny side, so we will do everything we can to help her gain a few pounds.  She's a real looker and as sweet as can be!  You just have to look in her direction and she's all Boxer wiggles and kisses!  Deevah will certainly not be with us long because one extremely lucky family will be snapping her up before you know it!
