The Boxer’s Poem

The Bridge calls and he must respond.
He must respond with his last breath, with the final closing of his eyes.
He will take his next breath, he will see again, he will hear and he will be without pain,
He will be whole again after this journey.
They call out to him, the friends who have trod those hard worn timbers before him, those
who will welcome and guide him. His new friends await his journey’s end.

But sadness torments him as he leaves this life.
As he leaves those who have loved him.
No more could they do and so have set him free.
Their final merciful act of love for him.
He hopes and prays that he has pleased them. That his life has brought them happiness.
Oh! Will he ever know how much?

But they keep calling, those who went before.
He is without choices now, as he stands on those ancient treads.
So to begin this final journey.

With each step, he hears them call after him, the distant voices of those he leaves behind.
“My devoted friend.
I pray that this final sad day in this life, will be the joyous first day in your next.
Go now to your Boxer friends. They call you. They wait for you.
At the end of the rainbow, they wait.
We will meet again my dear friend, when my own joyous day arrives
And I too walk those ancient timbers.
You will be there for me, waiting on the other side, calling me.
But, until then, I must be strong for you. I must say goodbye to my trusty companion, my
sturdy crutch and, oh so often, my smile.
Now you are what I see through my tears.
I see you whole again my friend. I see you run.
Goodbye my devoted friend.
Goodbye.
You are truly missed”.

And so, into his painless peace, he takes the final step.
